CARTOON EVOLUTION #22 - SPEEDY GONZALES
I take a look at the history and evolution of Speedy Gonzales, the pint-sized hero of the Looney Tunes roster, not only the fastest mouse in all Mexico, but an icon and legend of Latin America. Introduced in the mid-1950s as the final star character, Speedy has gone on to lead a storied history, marred with political controversy but decorated by wilful triumph. While only starring in 45 classic shorts, Speedy has left a mark like few other Looney stars.
I discuss how Speedy has evolved over time, alongside other Looney characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Sylvester the Cat, and also spotlight how animators changed his look, appearance and personality over time. Here's my look at Speedy Gonzales through the years!

I've always found it amazing how over the years (even dating back to his cartoons being taken off of CN in the 90s), every time someone tries to cancel Speedy for supposedly being offensive to Mexicans, the act of trying to cancel him ends up being what actually offends Mexicans. I'm Mexican and I've never found the character as a negative stereotype. It was actually pretty cool to have a Mexican looney tune while growing up, and I was really disappointed to see him dropped form Cartoon Network. Mexican culture can often be self-deprecating, so we don't mind these types of things, rather we embrace them. But that's just one opinion.

If Dave were to do one on Taz, it's likely going to be a Cartoon Evolution shorts since when compared to the other Looney Tunes characters he only appeared in 6-7 shorts until he disappeared for almost 2 decades until the early 1980's and then gained a resurgence in popularity in the 1990's similar to Marvin the Martian.

I was lucky enough to have met and befriend Frank M Gonzales, after whom Speedy Gonzales was named. He was my neighbor for years before he died in 2014 in Kingman, Az. He was a very nice man and the story about the origin of Speedy's name is true.

I absolutely love this character and a few things of note that I found interesting: -Speedy working at an assembly line makes sense because of his speed -Of force he would run a pizza restaurant that evolves a lot of cheese -I wish we got to hear Speedy in the Space Jam 2 trailer

Nice. I like the Speedy Gonzales cartoons that paired him with Sylvester. But I particularly like him in The Looney Tunes Show. I find it interesting that the higher-ups felt Speedy was bad, yet a lot of people of Mexican and Hispanic origin really like Speedy. I do like how Speedy is seen as more than just a Mexican mouse. I can't wait to see him in the Space Jam movie.

6:39 I'd say Slowpoke Rodriguez is only problematic on the surface level; Much like the initial Speedy, Slowpoke is also a character who subverts expectations, only the pea is buried under a few more mattresses. Yeah, his personality is kinda opposite of Speedy's, but he's not wholly a lazy dummy. The depicted clip shows Slowpoke's real character to a tee, allowing the viewer not to underestimate his slow demeanor, and see that though he's not fast, he is still able to watch out for himself, without the need of a secondary companion. Oddly enough, me describing Slowpoke made "Slow and steady wins the race" come to mind.

I'm Mexican-American, and absolutely LOVED the Looney Tunes cartoons growing up. And I still love them today. I NEVER once saw Speedy as a hurtful stereotype, neither did any of my family. He was/is quite frankly a hero to me and my family. He's proud, heroic, and clever. He played a huge role in me becoming proud of being Mexican, since I had identity troubles for a long time. But, I am so glad that the icon Gabriel Iglesias voiced Speedy in Space Jam 2. That was so cool.

Speedy evem had his own game in the 90s. Speedy Gonzalez and The Los Banditos, made by Sunsoft for Super Nintendo (And I believe Sega Genesis) In the game, Sylvester and a group of cats captured all the mice in Mexico except for Slowpoke and Speedy. Slowpoke tells Speedy what happened and Speedy is off to save his mice friends. The game is a level based, fast pace platformer, sort of like games like Sonic the Hedgehog. Through out the levels, you'll rescue mice in cages that act as checkpoints and every so often, the level will consist of a boss battle. Random fact, because of how its gameplay is similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, the game was hacked and modified to change the characters, from Speedy to Sonic and the mice into Marios. The game would then be released as a bootleg, titled 'Sonic the Hedgehog 4.' This bootleg would be known for its very poor edits and performance.

Another Speedy appearance you may like to look into is the song by Manolo Munoz that was remade in the early 2000s by Kumbia Allstars that featured him running around a bar flirting with ladies and enjoying a Mexican night out. It had rought animation but was fun to watch.

Actually, had it not been for the Coyote and Sylvester’s input, Speedy would’ve won the race. Notice how in that cartoon, during the last few frames of Speedy and the Roadrunner, Speedy appears to be a little bit faster than the Roadrunner.

I remember hearing that Eugenio Derbez wanted to do the Speedy Gonzalez movie and have him voice the character, I would love to see him play that character, he’s one of my favorite Mexican comedians from my childhood and I always watched Derbez en cuando and XHDRBZ.

While those Daffy and Speedy cartoons were far from...well...good, Speedy manages to be in good form while Daffy becomes a victim of personality devolution. Though the weirdest thing about the Daffy/Speedy shorts to me was finding out that segment from the Bugs Bunny Howl-o-ween special was its own original cartoon. They just took the original Witch Hazel cartoon, traced over all of the witch's animation from the short, and just had Speedy turned into a witch with his voice coming out of her character for some reason. In the context of the special, it looked like cheap, reused footage that made that part of the special unintentionally hilarious. Anyway, I'm glad that they've been able to use Speedy in some degree recently. I really liked how the character was in The Looney Tunes Show with him being Bugs's confidant and a dedicated small business owner.
