Sylvester is the single most underrated and underappreciated character in animation. He's just so versatile, and he's so beautifully acted in all of his shorts. His moments of complete nervous breakdowns (like in Birds Anonymous) feel as natural to his character as any of the physical slapstick he's endured, and you can't help but feel for him in those moments. He's a truly phenomenal character. And yet, it's always Tweety on the merchandise. Not that Tweety doesn't have his moments of greatness, it's just that Sylvester is definitely superior, and it wouldn't kill WB (or whoever) to make an effort to spotlight that wonderful cat - especially in this day and age of the viral cat video!

Emily Plunkett My feelings exactly! BTW today (March 24th) is the 75th Anniversary of the official debut of Sylvester. While he may not be the best of the Looney Tunes characters, he’s still appropriately cunning and fun to watch on his own, even though he’s always the one who gets the shaft by Tweety and Speedy in the cartoons themselves. I’ve always liked his voice too, even though it’s basically Daffy’s voice not sped up and has a more pronounced lisp and less Jewish sounding with Daffy. Mel Blanc always did a phenomenal job with the characters he voiced and his Sylvester voice is no exception. I do wish he got more recognition myself.

Logan W. Sylvester’s voice was the most similar to his own so that may have helped haha. No disrespect though he was amazing and did so many different voices so well. As a child though Sylvester was my favourite looney tune and I had a fair bit of Merch of him. Never noticed Tweety being on so much more but you could be right.

There are wonderful examples of pacing, minimalism, and implied violence in WB cartoons and a lot in T & S. Watching Sylvester build a pile of furniture to reach Tweety's cage, for example. Just the cat carrying pieces one by one through the frame without showing what he's building until the reveal of the tottering pile next to the cage. Tweety reacting to Sylvester's off-screen fate - as when he runs out of "piddies" as they go to market, stay home - and Sylvester falls to an unseen though not unheard fate, or the fifty lions and one puddy tat becoming just fifty lions. The ridiculous size difference between the two antagonists emphasizes Sylvester's incompetence and inability to subdue this tiny, apparently helpless bird.

As a whole' Warner Brothers Cartoons were the ANTI- Disney! Sure their earliest stuff was Disney - esque , but when Tex Avery, Chuck Jones*, Bob Clampett, and later Bob McKimson, and Frank "Tish-Tash" Taschlein (the real spelling of his last name, not the spelling he used) took the reins, they really found their own identity. *Sure Chuck Jones early stuff like the Sniffles Cartoons were Disney like, but he quickly "Caught On".

My favorite Sylvester and Tweety cartoon is Satan’s Waitin’. It’s just such a unique idea for the time and that closing gag of Sylvester and the would-be robbers on the escalator gets me every time. It really is interesting to look at how versatile Sylvester could be. Much like Daffy, the way each director used him was noticeably different (Jones usually focused on the cowardly aspects, McKimson more on the domestic aspects), yet it also felt completely natural, probably because Sylvester isn’t usually the hero and therefore doesn’t feel restricted by having to uphold a reputation. It sort of makes me wonder what would have happened had DePatie-Freleng relied more on Sylvester in the later cartoons instead of Daffy? While McKimson was used to using Daffy for all those years, he seemed to prefer the crazier version, which was a problem because in the DePatie-Freleng cartoons, he had to use the more narcissistic version. He seemed to overcompensate for it, making Daffy a full-on villain in those cartoons, but he might have been able to work around this by using Sylvester instead, especially since he already had directed some Sylvester-Speedy cartoons. It certainly wouldn’t have made a difference to the animation quality, but it would have felt more natural than the bland “Daffy-Speedy” offerings of the time.

One of the animators said they created the cartoons to suit Jack Warner, head of the studio. Warner had a sadistic streak, famous in how he tormented his stars and employees. Jones said the more violent the better. If Warner didn't laugh at a cartoon preview, they would add more violence, explosions and even racial jokes to spice it up. Censors were not concerned about violence and racism, but many cartoons had to walk a thin line about what sexual innuendo was permissible. Betty Boop had to clean up. Apparently a transvestite rabbit was acceptable.

Goofy"s How-To shorts involving sports walk a fine line. They can get hysterically wild an funny, but not as wild as a Tex Avery MGM short. Rival studios like Warner Brothers, MGM, and Walter Lantz, were giving Disney serious competition, and Disney had to keep up. Mickey Mouse was pushed back, because his personality didn't suit brash, broad, fast-paced comedy. Goofy, and especially Donald Duck, got the spotlight, because they could be used for that type of comedy.

I actually preferred Sylvester paired up with Porky rather than Tweety. Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Chuck Jones has always been my favourite Looney Tunes animator. As for Tweety, I always enjoyed him best with the Granny episodes and I loved Sylvester & Tweety Mysteries when I was growing up.

I agree, I always enjoyed them more paired with other characters than with each other.

I agree 100%, especially about Chuck Jones. He's always been my favorite. Friz Freleng's stuff is great too, but Jones's cartoons always seemed to fit my sense of humor more.

@isatherebel1520 I've always appreciated how many different directors there were for the Looney Tunes, as I enjoyed seeing a variety of portrayals of the characters and how each director had a different take. Not to say that I don't usually prefer character/design consistency for films/TV, but I think the inherent looniness of the Looney Tunes lends itself to that sort of chaotic style.

some trivia : in the mid '70s I went to France and they were nuts for Tweety & Sylvester over there ! They strung together some of the old classic cartoons and put it in theaters as a movie. There was also merchandising like comic books & figurines

Tweety look so different. But so cute. Sylvester looks abit more like real cat. Sylvester is 100% funny and full of action. Tweety is intelligent style. Cats wanted Tweety so much. But Tweety is always intelligent. So many chaters share lot of interesting things. 😀👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻Dave i love this video.

Sylvester and Tweety are some of my favourite Looney Tunes characters. I find the 2 to be rather underrated. I find them to be just as if not more comedic as Tom and Jerry. I'd kill for them to make an entire spin-off series again about the 2 and their day to day antics. Maybe even have episodes where they reluctantly work together to fight something bigger than themselves

Really sad we never got to see the Clampett insanely violent version of Tweety and Sylvester. After the first three Freelings, the series got pretty formulaic.

I always loved how Tweety would suddenly have a weapon at hand like a hammer or giant hatpin ...and how in many of the Warner Bros cartoons like Foghorn Leghorn, Daffy, & Tweety, there always seemed to be dynamite close at hand to blow up their enemies. . hahaha

WOW! I for so long wanted to see the work on that Clampett Sylvester & Tweety film (ever since Jerry Beck mentioned it in his book), and didn't know how much of it was done, of if it still existed anywhere, and now we even get the title of it! Cool, and so interesting looking! As that film was being worked on as Clampett left, Freleng was simultaneously working on a followup to Peck Up Your Troubles, and THIS was what he converted into "Tweetie Pie" when he got the rights to Tweety. That's why the story looks nothing like the Clampett version. It was entirely Freleng's own creation, and he only used Clampett's layouts for it. (It's easy to imagine the woodpecker in Tweety's role, minus the speaking lines, and he would have simply pecked the wooden furniture Sylvester had piled up, instead of having to saw it). That's why there was the dispute between him and Selzer over using Tweety. Selzer wanted him to keep the woodpecker. Right before Freleng died, I saw an interview in a magazine he did where he explained this. Sorry I can't seem to find that anywhere now. You also left out their 1972 appearance in "Daffy Duck and Porky Pig Meet the Groovie Goolies", though I wonder if that was intentional, since a lot of people hate the special. Freleng unit animator Virgil Ross was actually working at Filmation at the time, so the Freleng characters, including Sylvester and Tweety, actually looked just like they did in the golden age!
