Good video, this is a scenario a ton of us have been in. I’ve had this exact conversation with former employers where the “is there anything we can do to fix this” and I say no. Deep down there are things but you don’t want to throw friends and co workers under the bus so you leave. Some bosses would take your concerns and fix things to keep you, others will take it personally and as an insult. It’s a tricky spot. Good luck to Coley. He’s leaving a dream job of mine.

I don't know why Prez is so hurt when these guys leave. Their whole business model is to bring in cheap talent, prop them up and then get the most of them during their contract. If they can get more, they leave. If they cant, they dont get renewed. Their business model supports not having a culture of retention. The only ones that exempt as the ones from the earliest days where they have equity to sit on and/or recurring big revenue. I dont think Prez & Erika are asking themselves why these people leave. If anything theyre happy they produced successful talent and didnt overpay for them. They are playing Moneyball for modern talent personalities.

I did it when I was consulting for an accounting firm and while I don’t regret it, it’s definitely an invitation to be humbled. Everyone is entitled to ‘outgrow’ a job they’ve had for a long time but unfortunately you’re right - one of the guardrails in life we’re all better off following is ‘don’t leave an income without another one lined up.’

The thing about non-competes is that they have to be very narrow to be enforceable because a company is not allowed to prevent a person from applying his skills to make a living. NDAs, while again very difficult to enforce because violations are difficult to prove, are the way to take care of it typically, ie. “you can go over there but you can not share our IP to help your new company compete with us.” In general, non-competes are a bit of a waste of time.
