The Turkish pianist Idil Biret, who knew Hindemith has a splendid recording of his piano concertos on Naxos. It was my introduction to the piano concerto Dave mentioned from 1945. Yes why is it not more well known? I also like The Four Temperaments for piano and strings, which is a Theme with four variations.

Hindemith seems to have disappeared completely from the podium these days, apart from the occasional Mathis der Mahler, such a shame!

There's so much fantastic Hindemith. The piece we call the Symphonic Metamorphosis of Themes by Carl Maria von Weber should be absolutely a standard repertoire piece. But donors are conservative, audiences lack knowledge and confidence, funding bodies have other priorities, and money is too tight to take risks.

I'm obsessed with Opus 50 for Strings and Brass and its eerie septuplets.
