Nobody writes songs as Good as this anymore! Fellow Glaswegian Al Stewart's masterpiece! Never attempted this song before but after this great lesson I want to learn it now. Cheers Dave.

One of my all time favs. Fantastic album! I had about 90% of the guitar down but there were touches you uncovered that are more exact so thanks. Dave is one of the few who displays what the session player was really doing in the studio. All the nuances are there which make the tune unique and faithful. Those tricky chords when the electric guitar starts up ... you got em amigo!

Since there are two guitars, a piano, and a bass (not counting the solo breaks) there are many different variations of chord voicings that will work. I like the forms Dave is using, I do add in the piano arpeggios for the intro using block chords on the 5th and 7th frets, I also use a Bm7 as the second chord in the verse once the singing part starts to match the bass.

As a non-musician I'd like to ask a question... When songwriters (such as Al Stewart writing this) do they just starting writing what they think sounds good then diagram it later or do they actually diagram it first? Or maybe play a phrase then diagram it, then play another phrase then diagram it, and so on? Always wondered this about the process. Thanks for any reply!

I would imagine he had the chords and the melody but everyone's process differs. So who knows.
