What I respect most about this video is that you keep circling back to the spiders having their own personalities. A lot of people I know think dogs, cats, birds etc are the ones capable of it and don't understand arachnids are capable of that as well.

Thank you so much for your calm informative knowledge sharing. I don't watch your channel as a hobbyist, but as someone who is an extreme arachnophobe. I get an enormous amount of reassurance learning about their behaviours from someone who talks like he's talking about a favourite pet cat. I don't have tarantulas running freely around my house but you have saved me from many panic attacks when I've seen common house ones dash out from under the sofa, and I've pulled myself together and asked myself what would Dave do. Thank you. I appreciate and respect your channel so much.

I do like the fact that you treat each spider individually and respect their view on life. Too many people think of a pet as a toy to pick up and put down at whim. Animals needs must come first at all times but some can be hard to"read". A very valuable session today thanks Dave

Such lovely looking spiders! I have seen that "Happy Dance" to in the Grammostola Rosea I took care of for my son when she got a good meal! Luni was a docile kind creature but she could be fast when she wanted to be it. I have only seen her really upset 😡 or angry once and she was mostly curious I think normally and didn't show any grumpy behavior. She was often sitting on display outside on her house so she was a good company for me when I was in my office. Easy to care for and she didn't need much really. A picky eater and a slow grower perhaps but still a good ambassador for her kind! I think spiders etc are good pets but meant for display not handling. They are fragile creatures and those fangs are huge so I bet that a bite will hurt quite a bit and if you are allergic it can be a not so wise thing to get a bite. Respect doesn't mean that you fear them but you should be aware of their potential to hurt you ( or you them ). I think spiders are individuals just like us with their good and perhaps not so good days. You Dave and Sweet Camera Lady makes my days happier, thank you for all the good advice and spider information you put out here for us! Big warm hugs 🫂, Susanne.

My first juvie was an Aphonopelma bicoloratum and she was the 'meanest' madam ever! Of course, not truly 'mean', just incredibly defensive. She was a 'bite first and ask questions later' spider no matter what you were doing...feeding, watering, spot cleaning...she was not a kicker but she made great use of her teeth. It was a baptism of fire into spider keeping! It was also a really good lesson in how they truly are all individuals.

Saw a few videos and I have to say it's nice to see a pet owner who thinks it's not necessary to harass and pick up potentially dangerous animals (from king cobras to funnel webs). As someone with a background in biology I completely agree it doesn't benefit the spider, they don't form emotional bonds with people, and you're risking your and the spider's health. Care for them, enjoy them, but leave them to live a safer, calmer, life- great channel and great advice!

Also, I just started keeping i February and I now have 73 T's. I have 9 old worlds which is weird for me. When I first started keeping, I was the biggest arachnophobe there was. I am 54 yrs old and have been scared of spiders my entire life. My first T eas my Aphonopelma chalcodes Luna. She is so sweet and she is for sure my favorite. It took me a bit to get used to rehousings as I was a nervous wreck. After about 2 months, it felt like second nature to me. No more nerves. I do everything exactly the same every time to avoid the escapes and things. I always use a tote and catch cup. It never changes. I have 9 old worlds and most of them are pretty chill including my OBT. I do know however, her next molt, she may become Jason Vorhees. 😆 Watching them eat, and molt is Amazing. Anyways, I have New World, so called Beginner species that are more spicey than my Old Worlds. They all sure do have their own personalities and I have seen it change from molt to molt. You never know what temperment you might get.

I found out a long time ago that a really good beginner spider is the Texas Brown Tarantula. In Oklahoma they were everywhere and you could literally just pick up any adult, off the side of the road, and they were so chill. They are also very easy to keep. And I really liked the trapdoors that live in the Southern U.S. as well.

Superb upload Dave - and great filming as always! I came to your site probably a year ago - looking for tips on a good beginner spider, and I *still* haven’t got it! That’s the beauty of this channel - there’s so much invaluable information and content, that just watching has become almost a hobby in itself - I literally can’t decide, and secondly, I want to be 100% certain that I get the right spider *for me* as you pointed out in this video. It needs to be big, a slow grower with a long lifespan - and that’s not a simple decision to make, as is obvious from this. I’m in no rush either, it may be a hobby, but it’s also an investment of both time and care, like any pet. When I get my girl, I’ll be armed with a veritable encyclopaedia on her accommodation, feeding, climate, welfare and care, ambient surroundings - all learned from here. So thank you both, for the most entertaining and educational, tarantula learning resource on the Web - bar none! And giving me time to think and prepare properly - there’s so much more to all this than simply buying a sling in a box. It’ll outlive me at this rate when I eventually get her. 👍💙😉

I had a rosehair that i raised from sling to 6 yearold adult female. Beautiful color. Super docile , loved to sleep in my warm hand. Aggressive eater , she would jump 5 inches up and take food from my tongs. She would also burrow and make webbed tunnels all over the tank (substrate was maybe 4-5 inches deep) Best spider i ever had

Great video. I agree that the spider has to fit the person. The best beginner spider is a spider that you actually want to own. No spider deserves to be reduced to be training wheels before you move on to "real spiders", so a new keeper shouldnt feel coerced into keeping a Brachypelma or a Tliltocatl or a Grammostola if thats not what they really want. The new world is full of amazing tarantulas and most of them will be a perfect fit if you do proper research and preparation.

I want one just like that! When I was a kid, I had a chicken, that I made tame, and also liked to sit on my shoulder! Then, when I became a teen, we got a puppy. She loved to sit wrapped around my neck, like one of these cheezy fox-skins, that not-so-rich ladies had on top of their coats!😄 Actually, when our doggy became a grown-up, she STILL wanted to sit ALL up on my lap, and she was a German Shorthair!🤣 Not very small, anymore... but she insisted. She also slept in my bed. Amazingly loving dog. Never angry...😥

A. geniculata ftw! I saw the video title and was curious if you think of that species like I do and I´m glad you drew the same picture of them as I would. I chose to start the hobby with 3 of them because they never let you forget what they are capable of and not to underestimate even NW Tarantulas. Even after ten months, they can still freak me out with their unpredictable behaviour when it comes to feeding. One time they chase the slightest movement, another time they sit like a rock for ages and in the next second, they jump onto the prey out of nothing. Gets me every time. And they are like architects, give them enough clutter to play around with and their enclosures will look different almost every day.

Thing is, just because those are the conditions in the tarantula's natural habitat doesn't mean that that is what they prefer or what is best for them. In fact, a lot of their behavior and adaptations are specifically to counter bad conditions in their natural habitat.

I find the big fluffy tarantulas quite fascinating and actually quite cuddly the same way I find a bumblebee cuddly. Yes I know you'd never actually 'cuddle' them in a million years. I don't think they should be really handled at all much unless necessary. The smaller spiders with all black glossy bodies etc. make me much more uncomfortable and trigger the arachnophobia.

I kind of went in the opposite direction. I started with a single C.elegans and then jumped immediately into old worlds with Chilobrachys electric blue and baboons. It was only later I got some of the 'beginner' spiders. I've been keeping them for about two years now and I'm up to 35 spiders now. I'm pretty confident with even the very fast ones and don't handle any of them unless it's an accident. I had my juvi Heteroscodra maculata make a brake for it once, and it took me a couple of days to catch the speedy guy. It's the only escape I've had so far but he sure gave me a run for my money. He landed on me when I was trying to tease him down off the wall and into cupping range, and that's how I got him. Just accidentally handling the one with the worst bite haha

Hello, Dave. Thanks for the video review and a wonderful variation of spiders for those who get a spider for the first time. My first spider was a female Acanthoscurria Geniculata. A wonderful spider for beginners. She's a little over a year old now. moderately nimble, loves to eat delicious :) After her, many other species appeared very soon, but she was the first. From myself, I can add that the spiders presented in this video are all suitable for beginners, and I can also add very beautiful, though not large species. These are: Hapalopus sp.columbia gross (a teenager of this species was recently acquired even for a child about 7 or 8 years old) and Davus Pentaloris. Very spectacular, multi-spiders, though not large spiders. Special thanks to your cameraman for the large shots and bright colors of the animals that were presented. Health to you and your spiders!!!

They say Brachy's are slow growers, but my Curly Hair (female) has grown fairly quick, she is well over 4 inches, and she is only 18 months old. Yet my Nhando's who I've been told grow fairly quick, seem to have grown half as quick. I have a G.pulcripes that is the same age as the Nhando's (all confirmed females) that is slightly larger at the same age. They was all bought 18 months ago (roughly) all bought at the same time, and they was all 1cm slings. The fastest grower so far in my small new world collection, is the GBB. Mine has grown super fast (also female) and is also the most interesting T in my collection. I have bought 12 T's since I entered the hobby 2 years ago. Only one of my T's I bought as a confirmed female, the rest I purchased as unsexed. Only 1 of my T's have turned out to be male (B.hamorii) so I have been very lucky. The B.hamorii is probably 5 and a half inches now, and is in premolt, so if it isn't this molt, it won't be too many more molts before he matures. Then I would like to hand him over to someone who will have a go at Breeding him. I don't think I could bare him keep wandering around his enclosure looking for a female that he will never find.

Awesome video and information, thank you for making it and sharing your experience gained advice! Currently keeping rats myself, they're wonderful but not very long lived, might consider something with more legs in the future given their life spans are often longer. I really enjoyed your recent video on the emerald cockroaches, and although they also don't live long I'm thinking they might be a good way to break into keeping non-mammalian pets, as I've really only ever had mammals before. They seem relatively easy to care for and feed and breed, look stunning, and would give me experience in keeping the same kind of creature as I'd need as a food source if I wanted anything bigger. Though admittedly the first arachnid I'd like to try keeping would be jumping spiders, something a bit less huge and a bit more interactive, although again with the short life spans!

Good video Dave. I been keeping spiders and snakes for that matter for about 18 years now. For spiders: the Chile rose, mexican red knee, the Goliath Bird Eater, the white knee, the salmon pink and next the curly hair. Most of those are beginner species . The Goliath just needed cleaning out more often due to the high humidity requirements which sometimes made the substrate go a bit stagnant ,but on the whole the Goliath was ok. But yes I only ever kept mainly beginner species. And it's the same with snakes , I've only ever kept corn snakes and other American rat snakes. Never bothered getting into pythons or boas cos it's just something that requires that more attention to humidity and temperature , and plus the boas and pythons was always more susceptible to diseases . I guess I never came out of my comfort zone. Going back to spiders the most advanced was the goliath bird eater t blondi . I don't bother with any of the theraphosas or the lasiodoras now because my skin is just too intolerant of their urticating hairs. Nothing worse than waking up in the witching hour in the night when your hands are itching like mad, especially in between your fingers and feel like they are on fire 🔥 and all that was mainly down to was mainly after a clean out of one of their enclosures earlier that day. The hairs wouldn't always effect me straight away after exposure. It was always mainly during the night when I was supposed to be in the land of nod. But yeah 18 yrs later I have so say that beginner species or what people refer to as beginner species are what I cherish most . Haven't come out of my comfort zone yet and gone to advanced species and don't think I will anytime soon

Well, that was a very good Beginners Tutorial Dave. You've got some pretty Spiders there. I had no Doubt the A.geniculata would grab the Roach right away, they're always eating like there's no Tomorrow 😉

Great video again. You covered that really well. I started out with pretty much all of those you mentioned. They are very forgiving. I started out with small slings when they don't have colour and found they made caring for them easily. Labeling them was my main mistake when I first got them as my collection grew and I forgot which was which. Something I rectify immediately I buy or rehouse any new additions.

Curly hairs are gorgeous I’d absolutely love to get one to be part of our ‘’pack “ but after been bitten by a Chilean rose T and being EXTREMLY ill with it I’m now scared stiff to get another I was sick as a dog for a good week and a half had to go into hospital the worse thing is I have emetiphobia (extremely severe phobia of throwing up) I’ve held off getting another one my all time fave is a gooty sapphire or the Metallica species I keep watching your videos and seriously think about it we shall see watch this space be safe and be well to you Dave and your lovely camera lady x

The P. metallica's venom is WORSE than from the Grammo, let you be warned! One of my friends got bitten by his P. ornata, and he was sick for a week, too!

A _Tliltocatl albopilosus_ (curlyhair) would be a great choice for you. Most are very docile, and with proper technique (not handling the tarantula or doing maintenance with your bare hands), a bite would be extremely unlikely. Another good option is the _Grammostola pulchra_ (Brazilian black); people call them the black labs of tarantulas. I would not want to be bitten by any _Poecilotheria_ ("Pokie").

When you said she’s doing the “happy dance “ then we see the roach struggle and I’m laying here saying to myself well the roach certainly isn’t doing the happy dance lol that did make me giggle 🙊

I am by all definitions a beginner with beginner's stuff only: B. hamorii, C. cyaneopubescens, C. versicolor and a bunch of Psytalla horrida. And an A. geniculata. I fully agree: They are beginner spiders with attitude. Not more, not less. And they are super fun.

Love your channel! Gotta have love for the "beginner spiders". I have beginner, intermediate, and advanced Ts. Nice job explaining what a beginner T can be and adding that every spider is capable of having a skittish nature, and every spider can bite. I agree that handling does nothing good for your Ts, and they're best left alone. Plus, why put yourself at risk of being bitten and natural reaction will be to fling the spider off you, putting it in harms way. Keep loving our spiders!

Completely agree with going on the individual persons confidence etc. My first ever spider was a caribena versicolor sling that I raised to a juvenile before diving right in and getting a mature male obt after researching etc. Funnily enough, the most defensive spider iv had was the curly hair. I love how they all have their own personality 😊 great video as always.

Thank you for the video Dave! I’ve been keeping for 7 months so still very much consider myself a beginner! My first was a GBB juvenile. She is an absolute pleasure to care for, calm for the most part but can be skittish. Your statement of ‘be calm, be gentle ‘ rings so true as I find the more gentle my movements are (opening the enclosure or taking out the water dish) the calmer she is. So long as I don’t ‘rush’ she will either stay sitting where she is or just slowly walk back to her hide without bolting. I found she bolted back to her hide more when I first got her. Maybe it was where she was settling in or could be because I had less confidence so made more sudden movements. The only time she really kicks hair is when I’m closing the lid after feeding. I do tell her she doesn’t need to worry about me trying to eat her or pinch her meal hehe😉 She’s always out on display so seeing her a lot really helped me get over that left over niggling bit of fear. I’m so glad she was my first for this reason. I now have a G.Pulchra grown on sling and a T.Albo smaller sling. Also absolute pleasures to care for and looking forward to watching them grow over the years 🤞 Would love to own a B.Hamorii in a few months time (I’m telling myself that will be the last haha 🤣) Again, thanks Dave, wonderful Camera Lady and of course your lovely spiders 😊😊😊
