BIG upgrade here! I've enhanced and corrected the existing partial broadcast of the 1974 AFC Championship. Using Topaz, I upscaled, denoised, sharpened, de-blurred, and doubled the framerate. I then spent a grueling two days mulling over the color correction in Resolve. The color of the original was way off and had too much green. The picture was also too bright with not enough contrast. Different portions of the recording had differing color issues, so there wasn't just a one-size-fits-all solution. Was a major bitch to fix and I kept going back multiple times tweaking the color. Finally just had to settle on something, but it's a HUGE improvement. See before/after screenshots here -- imgbox.com/g/6...
Note that the broadcast recording ends mid-2nd quarter and picks up again at the start of the third - I've added NFL Films footage to compensate. You'll also notice that in various places the videotape has degraded and there will be drop-outs, distortion, or brief loss of audio. Note also that the color and contrast won't look the same overall since different portions of the recording required different color values in order to get them looking normal. I tried to get them to match as best I could, but it would be impossible to get them perfect. My thanks to romelovesdan for providing me the three DVDs of this game to work on.

Wow, as a kid growing up in the Bay Area, this game brings back some painful memories. Literally everyone I knew expected the Raiders to tear through the Steelers and whoever came out of the NFC to claim their first Super bowl title! Instead, a great dynasty was born that day, and as a 10 year old I was brought to tears for the first & only time after watching a sporting event(c'mon guys, I was 10)! Anyway, thanks for these treasures , Dave. There is no question that the 1970s is the GOLDEN ERA of the NFL!!! Without these guys, there would be nothing! 🏈🏈🏈

I was 6-years-old and when this game was played so I don’t remember it, but I grew up in Pittsburgh and my father did very vividly. He said the week before when the Raiders beat the Dolphins the press acted that game was the two best teams. Madden said later this game was his biggest regret because the Raiders acted like they won the Super Bowl after they won. Madden even got carried off the field which was ridiculous for a divisional playoff game. This really fired the Steelers up.

To this day I think the Raiders would’ve won this game if they hadn’t taken the Steelers lightly. It seems crazy now but remember, the Steelers weren’t a dynasty yet, the Dolphins were the dominant team in the NFL and when the Raiders knocked them out subconsciously they thought their toughest test was behind them. Don’t forget that the Raiders had beaten Pittsburgh the last 2X they’d played by a combined 50-14 score and they were overconfident going into this home game. My parents were season-ticket holders and I still remember after the game. my dad telling my mother in the car “the Raiders just couldn’t get up that high two weeks in a row”. The Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl and start their dynasty.

The silly seeing they used back then, not based on records, gave a gift to Pittsburgh. They got to play 4th seed Buffalo in the first round, while #1 seed Oakland and #2 seed Miami slugged it out.

10:00 This movie got me in trouble. A couple of days after seeing it, I came across a small, interlocking cardboard grid that when stood on end, looked (to a kid) a lot like a skyscraper. So out to the driveway I went with my "skyscraper" and a box of matches. Apparently I wasn't quite discreet enough, and Mom found out. 99% of the time she used the wooden spoon. Player with fire, it seems, fell into that 1% slot. Only time I ever got the belt. Never played with matches again, but ironically, I did become the family expert in getting a nice roaring fire going in the fireplace on snowy winter days.

Definitely a blast from the past. Outstanding picture clarity. Also glad the commercials were left in which really add to the nostalgia and "feel" of that era. Because many other various one from others are left out. Back then there was 1-2 commercials at each break, now there's 5 which are basically nothing but garbage. Curt Gowdy was arguably the best announcer ever. A lot of rivalries but 70's Pittburgh-Oakland was the best ever, there's not even a close second.

The change in the aesthetic of the NFL from 73 to 74 is drastic I have been trying to watch as many games as I could starting with the oldest I'm now in the era and with the players I remember most from my youth. Hard to believe that before this era the Steelers were the biggest perpetual losers in football but the talent they amassed in the 70 s was mind blowing. That last heave by Stabler...not sure what he was trying to do there (maybe praying for his own immaculate reception) but you cannot just lob it up and hope for the best when there is 1:13 left This was a huge letdown for Oakland after the incredible Sea Of Hands victory Cliff Branch had an absolutely magnificent game. The following year would be more frustration for Oakland as Three Rivers was turned into an ice rink. Al Davis and Madden were very angry as it totally neutralized the Raiders aerial. If you look at what the Raiders had done offensively from about week 7 through the playoff win vs Cinci...their offense was a machine firing on all cylinders. In those 10 weeks of play they scored 293 points. That's an average of 29 a game. The Steelers brass pulled out all the stops 😁

Kicking was very very different back then in terms of expectations and what kind of field goal % constituted a good, average, or bottom rung kicker. Didn't have the locked in robo kickers of today or perfect conditions in so many stadiums. Gerela was considered a good kicker back then and actually went to two Pro Bowls. He was usually somewhere in the top 10 of field goal % yearly during his career But yea that's a bad miss.
@larrymelman
@larrymelman Жыл бұрын
@@timburr4453 The 70's Steelers had a big achilles heel with special teams. They almost blew Super Bowl X because Noll was afraid of punting at midfield, fearing the equally weak Bobby Walden would be blocked, choosing instead to turn the ball over on downs at the end of the game. Gerela missed a XP and 2 FGs in that game. He was average to below average but the Steelers stuck with him for 8 years, which was almost unheard of back then unless you had a Stenerud-ish level of kicker.
@timburr4453
@timburr4453 Жыл бұрын
@@larrymelman His stats don't tell the story of an average kicker though. Now one game...Super Bowl vs Dallas yes that was a poor performance and 2 misses and an XP is a full touchdown left off the board that they have to overcome. But over the course of his Steeler career he did not rate as a below average kicker. Finding a kicker better than Gerela was likely no easy task...and Noll was probably worried he could end up with someone worse. Guys like Bakken, Cox, Cockroft were not available. In 1976 he started to decline. That's when you couldve aggressively tried to look for someone new. The years before that were fine
@larrymelman
@larrymelman Жыл бұрын
@@timburr4453 I think if they had lost SB X, Gerela and Walden would have both been out. But what do I know. Fortunately they were dominant enough that having bums for kickers did not hurt them. Compare Gerela's stats to say, Tom Dempsey, they are quite similar. Dempsey bounced around all through the 70's.

This loss was a huge disappointment for Raider fans they were favored at home coming off an emotional high from the previous week win vs Miami and completely got destroyed by Pittsburgh defense Stabler had a rotten game•the Steeler defense during this era was so dominant the NFL made a rule before the 1978 season to help passing offenses the pass interference rule no contact beyond 5yds later rightly dubbed the Mel Blount rule and suddenly all QB's instantly saw their yards completions and TDS skyrocket, remember that when judging great QB's all the modern ones are not playing under the rules of previous era's guys like Stuabach,Unitas,Namath,Graham,TarkentonMeredith,Jugenson,Tittle,even guys like Luckman,Baugh,and Van Brocklin would flourish under modern post 1978 rules.

One of the worst days of my Raiders life. We thumped them earlier in the year. We were the best team but their defense and running game were too good. If the Raiders won this game and then also won SB12, they would have had 4 Super Bowl wins by 1984 vs The Steelers 3. And Ken Stablet would have been in the HOF by age 40 instead of after he died.

I agree. I was at this game when I was 11 years old and I’ll never forget how bummed I was leaving. The Raiders run defense absolutely sucked. If they were able to stop Pittsburgh’s run game at least by half, they would’ve gotten them off the field quicker and had more chances to score. Looking back, now it makes sense why they went after Ted Hendricks in the off-season and changed their defense to a 3/4 from a 4/3.

I personally know Terry Hanratty and he told me that the Raiders used to play loud hard rock music in the steelers locker room during halftime so they would have a hard time working out a game plan for the second half. They would give the steelers somewhat deflated balls when they were on offence etc. 😂 He never divulged any Steeler tricks at River front, though? Only in Oakland.😂 Madden was something else. 😂

@@davevolskysbackdoor5673 Just messing with you. They don't call it "The Lost Game" for nothing. Is the original broadcast of the 1976 divisional playoff game between The Patriots and the Raiders lost forever as well? Underrated classic, but I've never seen a video of original broadcast other than a fraction of the final drive.

How prophetic was the commentator at 1:18:29? It's a 10-10 ball game in the 4rth quarter and he says "Oakland's in trouble, they're in trouble right now." Very next play, Stabler throws a crippling interception that Pittsburgh returns deep into Oakland territory and sets up the touchdown where the Steelers go ahead for good. Then, the same commentator at 1:33:29 says something to the effect that Bradshaw hasn't run too much, but he might try to negotiate the side that Gerald Irons is playing on, #86 for the Raiders. Very next play, Bradshaw runs a bootleg right at Gerald Irons.

@mrmercedes8528 totally agree. I stopped watching it after Godell penalized James Harrison over and over. Then the defenseless receiver rule did it for me....I hear about all the stats of the new generation and how they are superior to these guys total bs. I would love to see a modern receiver play against the Pittsburgh and Oakland defenses... Can you imagine Dan Fouts and the Chargers of the early 80s with the modern rules? Jefferson, Joiner stats would be off the charts. Same with Stallworth and Swann...

There's a direct satellite version of Gowdy working for CBS and doing a Saints-Jets game from 1980. Hank Stram was his partner. Because it's a direct feed, there's no commercials and the video continues. During commercial breaks you can hear Gowdy and Stram arguing with Gowdy getting pissed that Stram corrected him about something during the game. Great stuff!

Man, Joe Greene owned Jim Otto in this game. No fault to Otto, a great player, but Greene looks like a real athlete among a bunch of old dudes. And really, Pittsburgh's lines won more plays than they lost, on both sides of the ball. By the middle of the 4th, too, Stabler looked a little shaken, reacting before the rush got to him. Still, a great game, and some great run blocking in this one.

I like the 1976 Steelers that lost to Oakland in AFC Championship. 28 points allowed in last 9 regular season games and blew out the Colts on the road 40-14, and out gained them 526 to 170 yards. If Franco and Rocky played in that title game at Oakland it would have been different
