@@DaveWallerLFC Liverpool had finished fifth the season before - their lowest position ever under Paisley. He saw the team needed freshing up and needed to get the hunger back with younger legs - so he got rid of a lot of the players who had been at Liverpool for 8 years or more. Clemence wanted to leave so that was a move forced on Paisley.

My step dad took me to this match - he was a big Leeds fan and I was a big Liverpool fan. Sat in the old stand with the Leeds supporters and went up when both goals hit the back of the net. Remember getting a load of abuse even though I was only 11 years old. Leeds fans burnt a Liverpool scarf in the kop end and when I left the ground I got my Liverpool scarf ripped off me. Still got one photo from the game with some of my heroes on.

Watching this era of games makes me realise just what a player Ian Rush was. King Kenny rightly gets a lot of praise but I think Rush maybe gets overlooked because of that. It really annoys me that fans these days seem to think everything is all about the premier league era players, Rush was better than any of them who followed as an old school striker. *Good job I re-read this before I posted it as spell check had it as 'old school stripper'🤣
@randyborstol24912 жыл бұрын
I just posted similar on another match. Rush from 1982 (the Everton 5 - 0) until 1987 was one of the big names in world football. They had him in a Frankenstein ad as it seemed to be from another planet and lethal everytime he got the ball. 1983/84 especially with 5 against Luton and that hat trick at Villa. He was huge similar to Barnes in 1990. He was regarded as the best forward since WW2 along with Jimmy Greaves. We use sing 'we all agree Rushy is better than Greavsie'. ITV one midweek evening even had a program debating who was better. Reds were in a panic he was leaving and started a Rushy Must Stay campaign. There were anxieties that it really was the end of Liverpool. During 1986/87 I felt the team got lazy and looked for Rush all the time again like Barnes in 1990. I would even say Arsenal breaking that Rush phenomenon of never losing a game when he scored had a huge psychological impact on the team . His Juve spell, his second Liverpool spell and the stunning 1988 team all took the gloss off this first spell.

@@frankmachin5438 I do think he isn't given the praise he deserves mainly because this generation seem to think football began with SKY television in 1992. It's like when people say Liverpool have only won one title, like the other 18 don't exist! Also Kenny rightly gets huge praise which I do think sometimes puts Rush in the background a bit more than he should be. Personally I can't think of anyone as good as him in the past 40 years, but you'll get people making out Shearer, Cole, even Torres were better when they weren't, Rush pressed and chased back like this Klopp era team too. The more of this old footage I watch the more convinced I am there hasn't been anyone to touch him, as an out and out goalscorer anyway. Henry at Arsenal was the best forward in the post 1992 era I have seen but a different type of player.

I’m a Leeds fan. Went to this game as a 12 year old. Waited for autographs outside the west stand players entrance, as I did with all games back then. Every Liverpool player stopped and signed apart from 2….Dalglish and Grobelaar. They just ignored us and walked straight past and got straight on the team bus. Given that the current Liverpool side need to make ten good chances before scoring a goal and they play high 50's to 64 matches a year, imagine how many goals Rush would score today...

You don't rate *any* of the current team? (The team that has got 90+ points in 3 of the last 4 seasons.) Comparisons between different eras are hard, but this feels a bit harsh. I'd say that you could make a reasonable case that Alisson, Robertson, Matip, Van Dijk and Salah are no worse than their equivalents in the 1982 team, or at least wouldn't look out of place.
