Must be one of the only games where one team won it for the other…

How the hell was that a penalty?

I only started supporting Liverpool in 1977. The first actual game I watched was the 77 FA Cup final! I will always remember me and my best friend repeating "£440,000" when we heard King Kenny was joining, because we just couldn't fathom how much money that was (for some modern players that's not even a week's wages!) Ray Clemence will always be my favourite Liverpool player though.

For me,Liverpool's demise in the 90's started with his retirement.VVD is proof that you need a world class central spine in a team.

Ah, the good old days before Astroturf and under-soil heating, when you absolutely needed superb ball control to look good, i won't say anything about the long ball, 'kick and chase' which was still a thing back then. This was before they banned passing back to the keeper, which was also a staple of the Liverpool approach. I'm pretty sure the balls were heavier back then too. {although not as heavy as it used to be }

Was at that game 15yr old .City were second in second division but Liverpool unfortunately were levels above.Think attendance said 48000 but felt bigger the place was packed.

Arsenal Manager Terry Neill mentioned in the interview at the end that they hadn't won anything yet. Turned out that they didn't win anything that season and we did (the League)! Every cloud.....

The impact John Barens made on the old First Division (before the EPL) was monumental. For 5 seasons he was considered one of the best players (top ten) in top-flight English football, then when he signed for Liverpool (age 22), everyone quickly came to the realisation that he was in fact one of the best players (top three) in the world. English football fans came to the stark realisation that the English (old) First Division had never seen anyone with John Barnes combination of strength, speed, skill, poise and balance once he started to show what he could do at a big club. With better players around him, he played better, much better, and his impact was like a nuclear explosion right out of the gate. It was as if the English Football League had been gifted the great Pele in his prime because it truly was like watching a man among boys. And the fact that he was not some high-profile summer signing from aboard new to the English league just added to everyone's surprise. Players who had competed against him for 5 seasons at Watford suddenly could not get anywhere near him at Liverpool. He was now beating players, setting up goals, and scoring goals with consummate ease, almost in a way that did not seem to make sense. When I reflect back to the start of the 87/88 season, I like all football supporters back then could not help wondering what the hell had happened... "How did he go from being very good but playable to totally amazing and unplayable seemingly overnight????..."

This is why my fave player was Digger whilst growing up! What a player?!? If he playing like that right now he would be touted as one of the worlds best. Beardsley was also underrated. There highlights show the free flowing attacking style of Liverpool. Scored lots of goals too. Nicol did well popping up with a few goals. McMahon solid and spritely in attack

Amazing work from a season that makes me sad. The Leeds game on January 1 was a huge event. I was surprised very little highlights were shown at the time.

Is Rush playing left wing?
@DaveWallerLFC6 күн бұрын
I think he was just playing up front as normal, along with Craig Johnston, with Kenny Dalglish a bit deeper. Ronnie Whelan was on the left. The strikers sometimes drifted out wide.

Where do you get the games from Dave?
@DaveWallerLFC6 күн бұрын
It varies. Some games I recorded myself. I've been very fortunate that a few people have given me their old video tape collections. There used to be websites selling DVDs of old games, although they seem to have disappeared now. I have also traded and shared footage with other collectors. This one is from the last of these categories.

Sorted the GERRR-MANS out in their own back yard ...Tremendous alll round team performance especially after pole axing kenny .Sub Howard Gayle was immense with his close control & burst of speed..which should of got a nailed on penalty..definitely ...his finest hour in a Liverpool shirt ..& a fine finish from Ray Kennedy with his right peg ..👏

What a tremendous Liverpool team this was. Simply untouchable this particular season. Would have seemed almost unthinkable at the time that the team would start to slide backwards less than 4 seasons later.

Expected result in context of the time. You can see Liverpool in big decline with no creativity in the middle and aging Rush. Genoa a solid mid table team from strongest league in the world. Liverpool did try but they simply had no quality to deliver more than effort.
@DaveWallerLFC5 күн бұрын
I'm not sure that's totally fair. The Genoa keeper was outstanding on the night, and without this Liverpool might have got back into it, although there was undoubtedly a decline compared to previous seasons.
@frozen17625 күн бұрын
@@DaveWallerLFC I think it's just realistic. Standard of play and individual quality was way higher in Serie A back then, you can clearly see it in this game. Genoa finished 14th that season, almost in relegation battle but had starting LB for Brazilian NT, Aguilera and second top scorer from Italy 90. Similar things like today with Premier League. I'm certain mid table team like Brentford or Fulham would do the same to let's say, AC Milan today.

If this had been played today the ball would have not even have been in the Spurs half until at least 5 minutes in. The incessant sideways passing is making games like chess matches. The speed that Liverpool played their passes was thrilling to watch. Players like Barnes who took on players are now sadly a rareity. Now he would get to the byline and then would it would go backwards until it was back with Grobelaar.

One of Gary Collier's two games for Coventry, a very expensive purchase at £165,000 per game. To say nothing of the carnage his transfer caused at Bristol City.
