A lot of these old matches coming up on KZbin again. Love to go back and see where we've been, technically and tactically. Other subject however, the German announcer briefly touches on English socioeconomics of the day, for example he calls out the 15% unemployment the Island had. I'm reminded how poor things were there at that time under Thatcher. We were getting a lot of British guest workers in W. Germany I recall.

Yes that is correct, a lot of people from the UK travelled over to Germany to work at that time.

Bayern thought they had won the tie after this game and their skipper made some unwise comments about how predictable Liverpool were and implied the return leg would be a formality. Liverpool won the tie by drawing 1 - 1 away. Liverpool predictably won the European Cup that season.

Some great shots of The Kop here.. Bayern were bookies favourites, that year if memory serves me right.

Liverpool n'a pas été inquiété sur les deux matchs. Le Bayern obtient le nul à l'aller grâce à Junghans. Pas certains qu'ils auraient battu le Real.

25:28 stonewall penalty. Slow it down to 0.5, he doesn't get the ball at all, only Kennys legs.

First of all, Dave, thanks for everything you do with these videos. It must take you a fair bit of time - and expense - sourcing, converting and uploading all these great, classic matches. You're a legend! Is there any way I can contact you directly? I have some videos containing some Reds games and I'd like to give you them to see if they're any use to you. Most (if not all) are early/mid-90s so there's a chance you may have everything, but might be worth a nose for you. If you have an email address or Twitter account then let me know and I'll explain more in there. Cheers, mate 🇱🇻🇱🇻🇱🇻

Can someone dispel a myth for me over this match? Back in about 1992, I read a book about Liverpool in Europe, and it quoted a Bayern player - I think it was Paul Breitner - after full-time as Liverpool playing rubbish, and calling it "typical English football." (Odd remark, given English clubs had held the Champions' Cup for the past four years.) This supposedly really got up the Liverpool players noses and fired them up to play really well in the return leg. The problem is I can't find any other record of this quotation anywhere. Is there another source for this confirming it, or is it an urban myth?
@DaveWallerLFC11 ай бұрын
Not a myth. In Graeme Souness's autobiography he wrote "Bayern's loud-mouthed skipper Paul Brietner told the world just how poor English football was, how predictable a side Liverpool were and how the second leg in Munich's Olympic Stadium was nothing more than a formality, a lap of honour for the home fans to celebrate." For some reason I have a recollection of Brietner calling Liverpool's football "unintelligent", but it seems his comments were just that, as well as disrespectful. Sammy Lee marked him out of the second leg as the Reds went through.
