Great episode, Jase. Much like how Dave Coombs Sr. became hooked on the sport by watching On Any Sunday, I became hooked by watching a VHS tape of the Blackwater 100 on repeat, narrated by none other than Dave Coombs Sr. There’s no denying Davey’s absolute love for this sport.

When you've come from the bottom, when you've built wealth without necessarily screwing others, you always remember what the bottom feels like. There's an empathy, an understanding. Sometimes people accuse DC of being greedy and I really think he has little to do with it. If you watch Mitch Payton's appearance on the Whiskey Throttle Show, he legit solved the problem with purse money, in part because he hates how race win bonuses work (Justin Brayton earned almost nothing for Daytona, then some Pro Circuit guy is getting like $200k for a 250F East win). Nowadays, the entry fee is rather low for everyone so the purse money available is very limited. Payton suggested the following: you pay for what you occupy. A van? Probably the same fee as nowadays. Two vans? A bus? 2 trucks? 2 trucks plus some VIP area? Then the entry fee grows and grows and grows in a rather exponential way. That would allow for the purse money to be rather big, teams would stop paying for race win bonuses and then ANY race winner could get $100k or whatever possible. Another side effect is that it'd make the events with the most entrants feel extra special as they'd have bigger purses.

I hate when people say motocross is the best it’s been ever right now BULLSHIT the racing is great yes at the pro level, but the prices of bikes gear fuel entry fees maintenance travel etc is killing the heart and future of motocross the amateur’s. mark my words we will have a mass exiting of competitive amateur’s based on costs. It happened to us, I can’t afford to be competitive we have to rebuild old race bikes because 12k for a 450 is not happening every year or two so we race rebuilt worn out stuff and sponsor money doesn’t even touch it till you hit team level. Privateer’s is on its last leg, they are a dying breed because of cost and we won’t have any future privateers because amateurs are throwing in the towel because Cost have doubled and income hasn’t changed.

This isn’t just sport problem this is a world problem right now, it’s called a bad economy. What other pro sport do you pay $60 to go watch and $30 to go to the pits and see the riders in person or see the behind the scenes work of what the team does through the day. I literally walked by and rubbed shoulders with Cooper Webb last summer at High Point. Literally no other sport can you do that for $30

Tim & Davey aren’t as honest as they try to make people believe. As far as amateur racing goes, they do pull strings and show favoritism to their buddies. From rulings on disputes to even their “lottery drawing” they do for camper hookups spot at LL. I know for a fact that the camper hookups was lottery for some and others they made sure certain people were selected every year. If they are blatantly dishonest about something as small as that, what else do they do that a simpleton wouldn’t know about?

The rise of KTM didn't happen through 50s, it didn't even happen through motocross, it was all enduro, which is why they were real bad for MX/SX (the bikes didn't like rhythm sections or whoops from the very base, tuning couldn't do much to solve it). From 1997 to 2010, KTM won at least 1 Enduro World title every single year, sometimes getting 3 out of 4 in 1997, 4 out of 5 in 2000 and 3 out of 3 in 2005 and 2006 plus winning 6 out of 7 official Scratch Titles (1998 to 2004).

IDK why Hunter didn't learn so much but the Stefan Everts influence on Jett's riding is undeniable. He seems to be chilling while everyone is almost killing themselves, which is how Stefan vs Bolley, Smets, Pichon, RC, JS7 and such looked like. I can't wait until there's a 450MX moment where Haiden Deegan is struggling with the inside line and Jett Everts just passes him standing up around the outside like Stefan vs JS7 in Matterley Basin.

I appreciate Davey’s vast knowledge and position on the sport. Especially the legacy. But in my opinion.. I do find this pod disheartening as the leaders of our sport don’t understand the big picture growth opportunities and what needs to change to get there. We are so wrapped around privateers, OEM needs and other pigeonholes, that the sport will continue to be at this mediocre level. I love this sport. But we need to be aggressive and progress what it means today in 2024 to be an entertainment racing series! The OEMs are not going anywhere… and sorry privateers are not selling any tickets or bikes. Absolutely zero. Just make the best possible presentation of this incredible two wheeled sport / show we all enjoy watching.

Jase, look into doing a podcast with a fellow Australian, sprint car racer James McFadden. I'm pretty sure he would be a good crossover interview.

Lol. Sorry DC. Dudes getting hurt on press day is not by chance. That was due to YOU holding a press day and not paying enough quality flaggers to do the job. Period. That was entirely on you, NOT BY CHANCE.

How about starting a "Ride to Survive" type of show? I've noticed Indy and NASCAR have created the same type of show. It's a chance to bring the audience behind the scenes and let them get to know the stars of the sport. The electric bikes should have their own class, end of story. You are looking for more content for broadcast, so their you go. If electric bikes are really here to take over, make them earn it in their own class. One could compare it to Formula E. I think we can learn a lot from other successful motorsports.

First off i doubt anyone that i want to see it, sees it, but regardless i like the podcast and been tuning in for a few years now. That being said i have to call some bullshit on the entirety of the Deegan bike claim situation. First of all Jase for knocking the kid for making the claim, the kid did nothing wrong wanting to claim that bike, the rules are there to keep the teams from showing up with 100k bikes to race against bikes that might be worth 15k. Its to try to keep the racing more fair and more obtainable for the average amateur racers. Look if Deegans bike wasnt something it shouldnt have been then it wouldnt had been near the fuss over it and they wouldnt have changed the motor out right after it was over with. But this is no surprise coming from jase considering he also said he doesnt believe there should be privateers trying to qualify for a supercross. The privateers at the pro level are just the same guys that are amateurs racing against the 1 or 2 amateur prodigys that show up to the ranch in a semi and getting paid 100s of thousands before even turning pro. Sorry but at what point should any of us be feeling empathy for haiden in that situation or star. Even if he had gone through with buying that bike deegan would had another one to race and he would have still won no matter what he was on. But keith mccarty calling up the yamaha dealer in canada that the other kid rode for and causing him to lose the bikes he was given for the year that is sad. Then onto Davey, i call bullshit that he had no idea who the deegans were when all this was going on in the office. That is an absolute lie and then for him to give his word that absolutely nothing happened that was said to have happened with tim cotter and the deegans, after he just admitted that he wasnt even there for it, that he had to leave to go to the airport while this was going down, is also more BS. Reality is hes just trying to downplay his relations with the deegans, to act like their name doesnt hold anymore weight in his eyes than the next, to make it look like everyone was treated the same in the situation. When in reality that was far from the truth. Probably a million people that know Haiden that had never seen a mx race in their life because of their youtube channel, but the head guy of mx sports had never heard of him before? The guy that runs the show at the ranch every year had never heard of a kid that came there on a annual basis and won championships and motos? Like come on who is buying that shit? Jase has a good podcast with a great guest line up but honestly thats where it ends as far as your opinions go, being soley a media guy only ever in the sport, never having to be a privateer in the sport let alone be on some kind of team, who would you be to say that privateers need to be removed from supercross. Especially when everyone knows that sx pays the bills more than mx does anyways plus would knock any privateer out of being in possible contention for the smx playoffs which pays the best of all 3 series.... end of rant out of me.

I understand why Jase talks over guests. Most can’t articulate their way out of a paper bag. You have to drive an interview, I get it. But I hope he learns from this interview. Let people talk. Dave Coomb is American Moto-Cross history. I will say, I’m stunned at home many people say; Ricky Ruined something. He made it better. Don’t forget McGrath dominated for 10 yrs. Ricky took it to another level. That said. When will you interview Ricky Carmichael

Its kind if disappointing that Davey doesn't seem to really listen to the points Jase is making about the privateers. It seemed like all the points just went straight through him. I feel like its this sort of stubbornness that is keeping the sport from growing ti the level that it deserves. Fear of change is what kills a series

To be real the reason why racing isn’t that know is because the people that make good money off of it, don’t give back to the sport ,they complain about tracks closing down and not having a lot of places to ride but instead of them doing something about it because they have the money to do so, they would rather complain. And this sport is supposed to be “manly”, it not too manly to complain all the time

Amazing time to be a privateer. All you have to be is top 20 in SMX and you can make some serious cash. That’s far from needing to win.
