I just had the same problem with on my 78 last night. One of my saddle adjustment screws was frozen on the E string. Probably from all the years of beer sweats getting to it. I soaked it overnight, didn't help. Heated it up in a pair of vise grips for a few min with a lighter and it loosened up. Thanks for all the info, Cheers.

When I was a young man, I'd look at a beat up old guitar and just see a piece of shit. Now, I see how much it's owner loved it. I think that's why I dislike the idea of pre-reliced or intentionally reliced instruments.

You should always refit a screw and turn it backwards, first, so it drops into its original thread. Just tightening them with a drill may make a new thread and weaken the hold. Best tip I learned years ago.

I have run across the "frozen" set screw issue a few times. What I find works is to heat the screw up really hot with a soldering iron, then remove the heat and quickly spray the screw with freeze spray. You might have to do this a few times but the screw usually will break contact with the saddle enough to unscrew it with vise grips.

I had a Fender P bass similar to this, but mine was 1977. Same three colour burst, similar wear marks. It had no skunk stripe, maple neck but rosewood fingerboard, truss rod screw at body like this one, but no truss rod plug at the headstock end. Yet, the black/white two ply pickguard was the original one. Maybe the one in this video was a replacement, but just saying that mine came with the same pickguard as the one in the video. All original. Sadly, it came without the bridge and PU covers, but the previous owner/owners left the bridge coverplate screws in :) Sold it for £500 GBP around 2006. Wish I had kept it a few more years as the price doubled/tripled for 70's guitars a few years later. Ah well. I miss that bass...

I don't have enough time to use a screwdriver when I'm working on guitars. The clutch in decent cordless drivers are really good at consistent torque. I don't know why anyone would complain about that, maybe ignorance or cork sniffing. If you don't want to use a cordless driver, don't.

Why is it that the ONE part that screws up is that one part that cant be replaced or soaked in oil to get it to free up.? Im always amazed at the sad shape that pickup mount screws are in when Im replacing the pickups. Not the adjustment screws but the wood screws holding the mounts to the body,. They are Phillips screws that are so wallered out that no shape driver can get them to move at all. How did they get them to screw in? Meaning a broekn mount to reach the screw head or trying to get needle vise grips to grab and twist. Sometimes I feel like replacing the PUPs and screwing them back into the guitar.

Hey Dave! What did you use to get the rust off that bridge? Re - Refitting wood screws. I feel for the the old thread by turning backwards till I feel it drop. Especially with the hardwoods you get on guitar bodies the thread integrity stays pretty good. You could get a machinist to remove that grub screw. Abom79 here on YT does a lot of that kind of reclamation.

Try heating up the screws with the old soldering iron.
@ian-c.017 жыл бұрын
Sometimes just heating and letting it cool a couple of times is enough to allow the penetrating oil in to where it can do it's work. Definitely worth a try ! The soldering iron should do it if you give it a minute or two.
@lepetitnabot7 жыл бұрын
You can heat the saddle to expand it, but the trick is to heat the screw so the metal expands in one direction within the saddle, but shrinks in all directions as it cools down. Physics; they're awesome.
@ian-c.017 жыл бұрын
It's going to be just about impossible to heat the saddle piece and cool the tiny screw enough for expansion to do it's thing, just putting a seized nut and bolt through a couple of heat cycles is sometimes enough to free it if you apply some releasing oil as it cools. It doesn't need to get too hot either, steel expands to it's maximum between 50 and 100 degrees C. Sometimes a sharp tap on one end of the screw while it's hot would be enough to shock it loose, (small hammer, no need to make it worse). It's probably just has a drop of beer and some sweat soaked it and got sealed with other random organic compounds. It's not an aircraft or marine craft or been used in a hostile environment for long periods, it's just neglected.
@KozmykJ7 жыл бұрын
You don't need the physics of differential expansion. Just heating a piece often breaks the lock whether it's corrosion, galling or cold welding ... or all of the above. Still need to be able to get a purchase on it though.

The noise floor increases dramatically with the "fancy" microphone. This could be coming in at various points in the signal chain, likely too much gain somewhere, but when the noise floor of the "fancy" microphone is introducing a constant stream of white noise that's really apparent, it's hardly an improvement. A good mic would not introduce that much white noise, even at extreme levels of gain.
