David is an incredible teacher. I don't know another artist who could put into words the philosophy of painting this well. Even his voice is like that of an old wise wizard. Just got his book, by the way, "An Artist Teaches". Loving it and enjoying seeing beautiful color plates of David's work. Wishing I could learn some of his wisdom.

There doesn't have to be "movement" or "direction" in a painting. That's typical academic painting talk, the stuff of ateliers. A painting can simply 'be'. I do landscape and still life paintings that are impressionistic in nature, and have been told they are beautiful, but I have NEVER create a painting predicated on movement or direction. Bleh!
