〈作品紹介〉
　1970年代に日本から始まったクオーツ式時計の普及により、スイスの機械時計業界は大きな打撃を受けた。しかし、スイスの時計業界はラグジュアリー戦略によって再生し、腕時計を「時を知る道具」から「持つ喜び」に転換させた。職人が一つ一つ手作りし、工芸品の様な完璧な美しい時計たちは世界中のセレブリティを魅了するものとして生まれ変わったのである。この見事な戦略により、スイス時計の海外市場規模はこの30年あまりで約4倍にまで成長したが、この半世紀にわたる、時計の国スイスと精密機器の国日本の争いは、今もなお続いている。
　《Digital Watch》は、そんなライバル関係の歴史を持つ日本とスイス間の共同作品である。日本のデジタル世界を動かしていた金や銀を再資源化し、スイス人の彫刻家David Bielanderが制作。その銀の性質になぞらえ日本人チームがAR技術を使いデジタル上で命を演出する。アナログやデジタル、工業や工芸、国境といった概念を超えて、現代アートとして新たな時代の価値の提示を試みた作品である。
〈Introduction〉
In the 1970s, the Swiss mechanical watch industry was hit hard by the spread of quartz watches, which originated in Japan. However, the Swiss watch industry was revitalized by its luxury watch marketing strategy, which transformed watches from a “tool for telling time” into a “pleasure-to-own personal item”. Indeed, beautiful and flawless Swiss watches, handcrafted by artisans one by one, were reborn to attract celebrities all over the world. Thanks to this brilliant strategy, the overseas market share of Swiss watches quadrupled in the past 30 years, but the half-century-long battle continues between Switzerland, the country of watches, and Japan, the country of precision machinery.
‘Digital Watch’ is a joint work between Japan and Switzerland, which have been in such a competitive relationship. Gold and silver that once powered Japan’s digital world were recycled, and Swiss sculptor David Bielander used them to create this work. Inspired by the nature of silver, the Japanese team applied augmented reality (AR) technology to bring it to life in a digital form. Beyond the concepts of analog and digital, industry and craft, and national borders, this is a piece of contemporary art that attempts to present the values of a new age.
