I think the point of the lyric is actually putting a spotlight on the errors of western civilization colonizing asian countries, or any country that takes over other countries with ideological plans for everyone. He's not condoning it, he's criticizing it.

TBH, I've always thought it's about The Needle. "I'm a mess without my China girl"? Definitely fits as a metaphor, especially since Iggy was hooked at the time.

Iggy Pop actually improvidmsed the lyrics on his Bowie produced album The Idiot. David said it's an anti-racism song concerning Pop's affair with and love for a Vietnames girl who didn't speak English and Iggy couldn't speak Vietnamese so they communicated in mime, but Iggy felt his Western ways were a bad influence on her what he felt was a purer Asian vision toward life.

His daughter, Lexi , has a song on her channel (called Athena Bowie) that she wrote . ❤️it . Titled , “David Bowie. Magic moments. Magic music. All by Lexi.” It’s quite good. Sad. A little bit haunting. Worth a listen. She’s definitely talented. Dad , I’m certain , is looking down saying - with that cheeky grin of his , “Yeah , she’s got it , of course she does” .

Bowie was no joke. He was amazingly insightful and understanding. He looked at the world with a clear eye and vision. He was saying what needed to be said, the truth. Over the years, there have been many men who have desired to take over the weaker country's, a bunch of power driven, power seeking psychotics. Bowie saw it and stated it as it was. Genius.

As a massive Bowie fan it's great to see someone who genuinely admires Bowie & is blown away like you are. I've been super lucky I met him in 2000 & saw him live many times. I've seen all your Bowie reactions & enjoyed seeing you get memorized just like so many of us. I suggest checking out "Blackstar", "Little Wonder" (Original vid) "Fashion/Let's Dance" live 83 (MUST SEE) & David Bowie 1996 Fashion Awards. I'll atop there b4 I add 50 more lol. Rock on...

Sweet! "China Girl" was the second single from Bowie's 1983 album Let's Dance. It was a hit across Europe and North America, as well as Australia, New Zealand, and even South Africa. Stevie Ray Vaughan plays the guitar solos on the studio version. It was my favorite track from that album. He changed up the arrangement of the song for his late nineties/early aughts tours so that it sounds closer to the Iggy Pop version from 1977. The "China Girl" of the song was actually Vietnamese woman named Kuelan Nguyen whom Iggy was crushing on. Back in the eighties, when Bowie's version ruled the radio, I took the song as something of a prescient warning to China about the risk of corruption posed by the process of globalization that was just getting started.

Written by David Bowie and Iggy Pop, "China Girl" began as a piece called "Borderline" that the two came up with one night residing at the Château d'Hérouville in Hérouville, France, during the sessions for Pop's debut solo album The Idiot. During a visit by the French actor and singer Jacques Higelin, Pop had a brief affair with Higelin's Vietnamese girlfriend Kuelan Nguyen. The two did not speak the same language, communicating through gestures and expressions. Their brief encounter inspired the lyrics for "China Girl", which Pop improvised while standing at the microphone.

This track is from the album "Let's Dance," and was written by his friend James Osterberg, aka Iggy Pop. Have you seen the film "Velvet Goldmine?" It's very loosely based telling of their relationship. Lots of poetic license of course...xo

Yes in 1983 you could have a hit pop song with the word "swastika" in it which seems pretty weird now to say the least. This song was originally on an Iggy Pop album with Iggy writing the lyrics and Bowie the music, so you'd have to take the original intention of the lyrics up with Iggy Pop. David Bowie has said it about invasion and exploitation. His voice is so smooth and it's such a good groove that you can't take everything in right away, which is not unusual with Bowie. If you're looking to do another album reaction maybe it's time to do Blackstar, his last album. But I'll watch any Bowie reaction you do!

The swastika (卐 or 卍) is an ancient religious and cultural symbol, predominantly in various Eurasian, as well as some African and American cultures, now also widely recognized for its appropriation by the Nazi Party and by neo-Nazis.

The song was originally sung by Iggy Pop, and the words were written by Iggy to music from Bowie. I guess they wouldn't use the word "swastikas" now, but back then you could mention that word in a disapproving way, which i think they did.

I agree with interpretation of lyrics to China Girl directly below, but funny thing is I always thought the lyrics were: "I'll give you Man O' Wars to rule the world", which has the same effect, but would be a reference to British Colonialism in the Age of Sail...which would actually be more apropos and perhaps more poetic in this song than, I'll give you men who want to rule the world", in my opinion anyway. Not that I think I am a better lyricist than Bowie or something crazy like that! No one was or is better than Bowie.

Ok, so I watched your reaction to the GG Allin docu, and it slightly got my hopes up, because I have been looking for a reaction channel open minded enough to check out some REAL stuff... I hope you are up to the task... because I have got some suggestions, say the BAD BRAINS "I against I" would be a good start.... I'm in my 50's and I feel like so many people are missing out on some amazing alternative music!!!!

I forgot to say that this song was about the oppression of women in China. I once saw a documentary interviewing the Chinese girl who did the MTV video clip with him (here on the single cover). So no bad meanings in the lyrics. He had a lot of deep songs about the reality of things: like for example one song about domestic violence, one song about prison, a lot of songs about some futilities of the Catholic Church and when he was older there was a song about gun violence in schools, which Valentine’s Day is supposed to refer to. He tried to uncover a few dark sides about society. Sometimes. But a lot of his songs are just pure fun and joy. Looking forward to another album reaction. 😊

Frankly Bowie aka the white duke did far better than this. To me this is below his greatest. Life on Mars on which the piano is played by Rick Wakeman of Yes is far superior as is space oddity and ziggy Stardust. Throwing you a curve ball see if you take it up....... Jean Michel JARRE. Yup a Frenchman. Has produced many albums mostly using keyboard but also varying it up by using laser harp and other electric instruments. His best and most known albums.... Oxygene in 1976 and Equinoxe in 1978 are fantastic examples of his works and in some ways take what KRAFTWERK did in 1974 producing their album AUTOBAHN using electronic instruments which they invented! I strongly suggest a top quality headphone is needed. Also check out the 1996 album Aero in which JARRE goes back to his original instruments to create surround sound versions of his classic hits 👍👍👍👍👍👍 please don't skip this, you will miss out on these and other great albums by JMJ. enjoy.
