I am glad you have bought some Bowie albums. I only have two studio albums "Hunky Dory" and "Ziggy Stardust" but I have also his 2-CD collection which was released before his death. "Hunky Dory" is my favorite Bowie album too. I didn't like "Low" or "The Man Who Sold the World" so much. Absolutely agree, Queen Bitch is Bowie’s most underrated song in my opinion, absolute classic and perfectly transitions us into the ziggy stardust era. You are a true Bowie fan, would push eight line poem up slightly, but Quicksand is also one of my favourites 👌

That's a darn fine list and very close to what I would have chosen. I have always loved the album. I remember taking it to my grandparents house in the early 70's to play because at that time we never had a record player. This is possibly my favourite Bowie album although it has stiff competition from TMWSTW, TRAFOZSATSFM, Station to Station & Low.

I agree with your ordering 100%, save that LOM has to be number 1. This was the first album I bought with my own pocket money at age 11. What an album to start with! Your comment about Queen Bitch sounding like a Ziggy track is interesting. I've read another critic say that on each Bowie album from the 70s there was one track which looked forward to the next album. Here's a stab at it - After All (TMWSTW, might belong on Hunky Dory), Queen Bitch, Suffragette City could shift to Aladdin Sane seamlessly, Panic in Detroit would fit on Diamond Dogs, 1984 is funky enough for Young Americans (though thematically not), Fame sounds like a Station to Station song, Station to Station is too long for Low, but was the song which captured Brain Eno's attention, Breaking Glass is angular enough for side one of Heroes, The Secret life of Arabia is like a Lodger song, and DJ could shoe in on Scary Monsters. Well, it killed a few minutes, and I don't have a girlfriend. I know why now.

I always see this album as "Hunky Dory" and that phenomenal, iconic hit ("Life On Mars"), under which one discovered the rest wonderful songs. Life On Mars is not nr 1 here for me, but actually, I not want to measure it eith the others, do I will just make a 10-song list leaving Mars, I cannot compare it with others. 10. Andy Warhol 9. 11. Eight Line Poem - I like it's quirkiness and who it just comes in from 'Oh! You Pretty Things'. 10. Fill Your Heart - I think it is a little bit corny with the lyrics so I just avoid it. 9. Kooks - Not bad in the least but similar to 'Fill Your Heart' the lyrics are kind of corny to me. 8. The Bewlay Brothers - Is it just me or is that bridge one of the best moments of the album. It is a great song about schizophrenia I think inspired by Bowie's brother. 7. Andy Warhol - It is an awesome song with a great riff on the guitar after that weird avant-garde stuff at the start. 6. Song For Bob Dylan - I really enjoy listening to this one with all the guitar that just sounds like something for Bob Dylan 5. Quicksand - Brilliant emotionally packed song as He talks about sinking amongst all of his thoughts. 4. Changes - One of the best ever openers on his albums up there with 'The Width Of A Circle', 'Five Years', 'Watch That Man', 'Speed Of Life', 'Beauty And The Beast' and 'Blackstar' with really catchy piano lines. 3. Queen Bitch - One of the early Glam Rock songs of his career and what a way to kick off his dive into the genre with a great guitar part. 2. Oh! You Pretty Things - I really love those harmonies on the chorus with the band similar to The Beatles' 'Paperback Writer'. 1. Life On Mars? - One of the greatest songs of 1971 and the whole decade. It is from a different planet.

Listened to this LP maybe 200 plus times 35 plus years ago, maybe only once or twice since. Changes used to be seen as the joke track on it, a mistake. Quicksand and Bewlay Bros maybe the highlights, ones I recall that had more depth or substance.

I read somewhere that Life on Mars was inspired by My Way, which in turn was inspired by a traditional French song. Anyone know if this is true, or just one of those urban legends?

Kind of - The link with Bowie and My Way is that he was asked to write English lyrics to the French song "Comme D'Habitude" which turned into My Way when re-written by Paul Anka, but his lyrics were turned down. He then re-worked the chords (I'm not sure how much they match up with each other) into Life On Mars, or he was at least inspired by the chord stucture. Life On Mars is a great song, and My Way is god awful - so I find it hard to compare them. lol

This album isn't that great. There are only two songs that I like, "Queen Bitch" (which I love), and Oh you pretty things, even if it is about gay dudes. Big disappointment​ after his last album.
