I worked event security at a concert in LA when David Bowie was touring with Klaus Nomi. Before the show there were a lot of people standing around talking and wanting to get to David Bowie. But, in all the frenzy, I watched Klaus step back, look around and began to talk to the staff that was working there. The caterers, the stage hands, and even me. I found him to be one of the most engaging interesting people to talk to. He was a warm, humble and openly friendly person. He was a very approachable and nice person and I have always remembered him and his friendliness to me and my co-workers with great fondness.

I was a 12 year old odd ball of a tomboy and me and my sis snuck (sp!) down to the basement to watch SNL on this airing. My life changed even before David Bowie finished his performance! I had finally found where I fit in! I'm 53 years old and I have been a hard-wired , die-hard, obsessed in all things Bowie fan since. It took till the internet to find this rare footage. And I learned that was Klaus Nomi,and so I started listening to him and remember the articles of when David Bowie approached him to do this. That was his style Bowie liked with the suit. Klaus has an almost ethereal voice that was of no other. Oh! If I was to have one wish and that would to go back in time of the early 70's and be apart of that whole New York City scene would be just electric! By the time I had learned about Klaus Nomi was too late. Sadly one of the first performers to die of AIDS and even more tragic not giving enough exposure for more to enjoy. So I am like the rest of these good folks saying "Tell me more" WootTootZoot!!!!! Cant leave us hanging!!!

At 0:39, when the background vocals first kick in, the harmony and general sound immediately reminded me of Blackstar. Then I realized that they were singing, "I thought you died alone." Dying alone is, of course, is the theme of Blackstar. I think it likely that Bowie was remembering this SNL performance when he wrote Blackstar.
@zillatov.v55013 күн бұрын
Blackstar has a lot of mysteries regarding if bowie himself was trying to pay some type of tribute to his past Like when bowie performed with marc bolan and then at the end there is a short cartoon-styled animation of the audience applauding and one of people sitting there is wearing a white shirt with the blackstar symbol to it And also at the end of the lazarus video bowie wears some black and white striped clothes which are the same clothes he wore in a photo session for the man who fell to earth which is eve n more scarier if you notice that blackstar released in 2016 and the movie is from 1976 The song "blackstar" itself seems for me very similar to station to station and both are 10 minutes long

Near the end Klaus belts out vocals so powerful they could’ve overtaken Bowie if he wanted to but he did just enough to elevate the song. Thanks to all who have shared their feelings/thoughts on this iconic performance. It seems to have touched a great many people. Also: I mentioned that I was posting the "performance only" version, and provided a link. It was summarily struck down and cannot be viewed, unfortunately. The Vimeo link still seems to work, however.

I'm stunned you have not got a strike for this!

One of the most important elements of this video which you have preserved critically for posterity and all Bowie scholars is the very visible appearance of Bassist George Murray to David’s immediate left. It gives us a good impression of Murray’s impeccable timekeeping without which there would have been no Zeit period (Murray played on all three albums.). David closed SNL as youll remember with Boys Keep Swinging. Murray’s solo was as good as any in the current jazz avant-garde including Gary Peacock and Marc Johnson. David always chose the best, and this clip preserving Murray’s lines is living proof. #BowieLives

This is my all-time favorite song from him, and I am strangely attracted to this particular version almost every time I wish to hear it...it's got an extra haunting quality to it, and I love the rawness of the live performance...when the measure of your artistry was still how well you can carry your album to the stage without lipsync or autotune.

I remember my mom let me stay up late to watch this live performance on SNL when I was a kid, and being just mesmerized and blown away. Same effect today, which is a testament to the enduring quality of true art. Thanks for posting here.

Nice memory. I was 12 years old and sleeping over at my best friend’s house. His parents were out and had hired a babysitter. We stayed up late and watched SNL with the babysitter and we were mesmerized, too. All three songs he did that night were spectacular. To this day I don’t think anyone has given a more memorable performance on SNL.

Never knew Klaus Nomi and David Bowie cooperated. Though always seen them as pure artists, I've regarded them in somewhat way different corners. But what a beautiful merge - apart from Mark Mothersbaugh my two favourite performers making music to art - what's not to like?

David Bowie is a rabbit hole of the best but unfortunately underrated musical gems I've ever met, Midge Ure, Klaus Nomi, SpizzEnergi, his guitarist from Spiders From Mars Era, etc.

I remember watching this SNL episode. The music scene in NY hasn't been the same since the '70's.

True. It was a little before my time to have participated in it but I appreciate it so much. Much more interesting things/creativity/pushing the boundaries going on and individualism was more prevalent. It seems to have been curbed in recent times.
