My brother singing this to us in the 70s, my mother my dog and clowns while he pointed at his 3 siblings, our mum and the dog. Still makes me smile today. He was a big Bowie fan and used to go out dressed ( with the zig zag on his face) as Aladdin Sane. Dad couldn’t cope with that and banned all Bowie records from the house. I used to listen to him in secret on headphones on albums my brother had doctored to show a different label. My brother died in 1999 and listening to Bowie now brings back so many great memories. @@lefkytheshin people would usually consider original the things that they don't know the inspiration to and that satisfies their individual quality standards. You believe someone who is inspired by other artists is not artist enough? Don't you think Bowie had known any artists he could learn a thing or two from? That's just not a reasonable point of view buddy, and will only prevent you from knowing real good contemporary art. If you want an example of something that seems pretty damn original, go watch/listen to eusexua. Everyone loves nostalgia, and you can be sure the people that are "not original" are the ones who love the past as much as you seem to do. They don't adapt with new findings cause they ignore them. x

Ive been a Bowiefile since about '79. Finally got the see him live at the US festival 1983 in Devore CA. As Bowie aged his voice changed from this childlike quality to a more bass tone. By 83 he had a much deeper base tone voice from his early years. This was "Serious Moonlight" tour. When he sat down at the piano to do "Life on Mars" he somehow used his young childlike voice. Absolute genius. When he toured for Glass Spider he hired Peter Frampton because Frampton was not getting a lot of work. When they sang "Sons of the Silent Age" Bowie sang the bass and Frampton sang the falsetto. Perfect. Absolute perfection.

@oppothumbs1 Жыл бұрын
Bowie wrote the song as a parody of Frank Sinatra's "My Way". Bowie has labeled the song "a sensitive young girl's reaction to the media" and added, "I think she finds herself disappointed with reality... that although she's living in the doldrums of reality, she's being told that there's a far greater life somewhere, and she's bitterly disappointed that she doesn't have access to it." The lyrics also contain imagery suggesting the futility of man's existence, a topic Bowie used frequently on his early albums

Lyrics :) It's a God-awful small affair To the girl with the mousy hair But her mummy is yelling, "No" And her daddy has told her to go But her friend is nowhere to be seen Now she walks through her sunken dream To the seat with the clearest view And she's hooked to the silver screen But the film is a saddening bore For she's lived it ten times or more She could spit in the eyes of fools As they ask her to focus on Sailors fighting in the dance hall Oh man, look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show Take a look at the lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars? It's on America's tortured brow That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow Now the workers have struck for fame 'Cause Lennon's on sale again See the mice in their million hordes From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads Rule Britannia is out of bounds To my mother, my dog, and clowns But the film is a saddening bore 'Cause I wrote it ten times or more It's about to be writ again As I ask you to focus on Sailors fighting in the dance hall Oh man, look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show Take a look at the lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars?

When david bowie passed away my mother and I went to "Estela de Luz" in Mexico City to hear this song (some people played their CDs). It was my bonding time with her and today we're still close because of bowie.

Probably the finest 4K restoration (and upgrade even when comparing to the beautiful 2016 mix) for a music video ever.

Absolutely epic song by one of the greatest, and Rick Wakeman's piano is just the icing on the cake.

The first time I listened to the song I didn’t like it. Then I was curious what made it good so I rewatched it. The second time I watched it I immediately fell in love with David Bowie. This song was incredibly unique and it’s one of my favorites now❤

Often the best songs aren't likeable on first listen. It took me 20 years to get in to a Kate Bush album after I bought it. I don't think I was mature enough to understand it at the time. It's a masterpiece.

@@DudeSilad True but I think Kate Bush’s music is more accessible then say Life on Mars (Although Kate Bush and David Bowie are both amazing songwriters!)

@@strangelyforgotten7522 Kate is far more avant garde. I'd say Bowie had the far more commercial music. Although Kate wrote a fair amount of it.

Great job, I love the video. Everything is so crystal clear, David’s voice and oh my, his face…he is so beautiful and has the loveliest voice. I am so happy I grew up with his music and his concerts. I love him forever❤

FINALLY!!!!!! ....LIFE ON MARS? in high definition. And it's happened in my lifetime too! My brother recorded this off TV in the mid 1970s on the very first Philips Video Recorder. The tapes were as big as bricks. We played it to death. Come on, you've got to agree.... How cool is BOWIE in this clip? THANKS for the post.

He could have written just this one song and what a song, but look at his body of work. The definition of creative.
