Bowie's version of this Scott Walker song is truly fascinating. Bowie has a knack for covers, having a Bryan Ferry like ability to take a song and 'make it his own' by virtue of his interpretation.

I was just watching the Scott Walker documentary, on which Bowie was the executive producer, and also appears. Scott Walker influenced him a lot, that low, warm vibrato voice. I didn't know Nite Flights was written by Scott Walker, but I love it. Bowie is my favourite artist ever, also because of it: besides his perfect authorial work, he showed me lots of bands and authors that became what I like to listen and read!

Let me explain why i think this is especially awesome: David Bowie, THE art rocker who at that time (and even now) was known more in America as the peculiar crooner dude who sang hits like Let's Dance and Modern Love, goes to a late night talk show to present his new work by COVERING THE prince of darkness, the avant garde obscurantist Scott Walker... I can't help but feel Bowie is laughing hard inside that he'd present himself with such stuff. A big inside joke.

I remember reading how he and Eno were so blown away by Scott Walker's original version. They were in Berlin working on Bowie's "Heroes" album, and Eno said, "How do we top that?" Fifteen years later Bowie recorded this cover version.

It's unbelievable, it can't have been during the "Heroes" sessions because this one was recorded in the summer of 1977 and released in the fall of 77. Nite Flights The Walker Brothers album was recorded in early 1978 and released in the summer of 78, so Bowie and Eno couldn't have talked about Nite Flights until they recorded the Lodger album from fall 1978 to spring 1979 !

This must have been pretty weird for the average American viewer of The Tonight Show in 1993 to hear a cover of a fairly obscure song being sung by David Bowie. The original LP of Nite Flights wasn't even released in the US in 1978, only available through import via Canada, the UK, Australia/NZ and the Netherlands. I am a huge fan of The Walker Brothers, especially the first four songs on Nite Flights and Scott Walker's subsequent solo career. If they were watching with the closed captions on they would have been mesmerized by the lyrics.

It's what Leonakita wrote (12 years ago, lol), Bowie had a knack for covers. But no one can compete with the Scott Voice. Scott's version from the days of the Walker Brothers' re-union is darker, more techno, almost dystopic. Bowie degraded it to a disco song. In that aspect, it's a rocking showcase, with excellent background singers, but no more than that...
