I think the "hot Tramp" is more an affectionate moniker for the Wild Child he is talking to in this song. It's funny how different eras affect the interpretation of words and songs.

David Bowie is such a genius. Bowie reinvented himself with nearly every album so don't think about any specific genre when you think of Bowie, he was just an outstanding musician. This particular song gives me Rolling Stones vibes. Thank you.

The word tramp can also mean hobo or homeless person.

yep, and that perfectly fits thematically with the _1984_ narrative in the _Diamond_ _Dogs_ album = s/he has been kicked out by the parents and is getting by living on the streets

You can never know *exactly* what Bowie means, but he's definitely not insulting anyone with "tramp." My take is that he is calling them independent or bohemian, possibly a bit sloppy since they tore their dress, but in an affectionate way. And we also don't know if he's talking about a woman, a man, or something else. He says "you've got your mother in a whirl, she's not sure if you're a boy or a girl," and then never defines which one they are --he just says he loves them (no matter what anyone else may think of how they present themselves) and their hair is great and let's go out and dance. Just because the person has torn their dress, doesn't mean it's a woman. Bowie wore dresses too!

In the 70's there were unisex clothes stores and fashion. It was just the fashion a bit of fun.

For a few more seventies Bowie rockers, check out "Suffragette City", "Panic in Detroit" and "The Jean Genie".

Bowie told his bassist Herbie Flowers and guest guitarist Alan Parker he wanted a central riff to the track reminiscent of The Rolling Stones and came up with this great riff.

Hello, just wondering, why are you not reacting to bowies original videos,,,YOU are missing so much, take care, Tony here in the UK ❤

Tramp in the UK does not have the same meaning. It is more like the character Charlie Chaplin plays a 'hobo' or down and out. Not really derogatory kind of factual. Bowie often is a mirror on society rather than the agressor. Keep up the good work.

I'd say this song - from 1974 - fits thematically with "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" (1971) by T. Rex. Which apparently has Elton John on keyboards. The cover of "Bang A Gong" by Power Station (1985) is good too, and might introduce Ace to Robert Palmer.

David was openly bisexual… no one actually knows if he was referring to a man or a woman in this song … it was the 70’s things were anything but politically correct . Honestly a lot less offensive than some of the rap/hip hop lyrics out there now.

If we didn’t take offense, don’t think the young should. The 70 s we were very open to experimenting with our ideas of ourselves. It ridiculous how uptight and judgmental our society has become. The fashion of punk was to provoke, hot tramp was a great line

Although this tune is weirdly upbeat, it forms part of the dark theme (of downtrodden people trying to survive under a brutal authoritarian government) in his epic _Diamond_ _Dogs_ album. The "tramp" word fits quite well when you listen to the whole album, which I'd suggest doing, playing the songs in sequence, at some point.

Endless hits from Bowie...Let's Dance featuring a solo from young Stevie Ray Vaughn? A dark duet with Trent from NIN? I'm afraid of Americans! BTW - it's been 9 months since the first and only Black Crowes Remedy reaction...you were so excited that I thought you'd have a few more by now?
