You must do the lead song, Station to Station, from the same album. It is like this song (great guitar work and build up) and is an epic. EPIC! When it came on the radio in the ‘70’s you stopped and listened for 10 minutes.

I had the immense privilege of seeing Bowie about 7-8 times between 1974-80, and saw the Station to Station tour twice. The man was simply amazing and has always been my all time favorite. Great pick Ken. I agree that the title track is brilliant as well.

David Bowie was ahead of his time. The only artist who can re-invent himself over and over so successfully! Saw him @ Madison Square Gardens for The Diamond Dogs tour and at The Spectrum in Philadelphia for the Young Americans tour. Such an amazing artist. Too many great songs to list, but I do like his ballad Wild Is The Wind. He doesn't usually do ballads.

This came right after Young Americans (1975) which was heavily into R&B, so the move to a funkier sound wasn't such a big stretch. Young Americans was actually more of a shock coming after the heavier rock of Diamond Dogs. But i think it's a much better album than Y.A. The title track, TVC15, and his crooning on Wild Is The Wind: perfection.

1976's "Station to Station" (which "Stay" is on) was a transitional album for Bowie. It's 1/2 rooted in his previous R&B "plastic soul" period, and the second 1/2 in his upcoming "Berlin Trilogy" period where he adopts German Kraut Rock. Bowie had different guitarists for each of his *phases*. Here is Earl Slick.

Earl and Carlos Alomar each had solos, trading back and forth. They both had ideas on how they should play the lead and Bowie suggested they "battle it out" during the track, fueling their creativity all the more!

David Bowie could play guitar, saxaphibe, and piano He had a range of vocal range. There were several musicians who played with him, over years. This album “station to station” is one of Bowie’s greatest. Yet, he admitted that Cocaine was his drug then, and he didn’t later recall much of this in 1976. Then, he escaped to West Berlin, Germany to escape and detox, and he created even more incredible music.

There is a David Bowie tribute artist named David Brighton and his band is called space oddity. His band is fantastic as well as David this song they use at the end of his first set. When hes doing a costume change he usually comes out as within white Duke and then at the end of this song he will leave during the instrumental part and turn into Ziggy Stardust for the next set. I've seen David many many many times and he always puts on a phenomenal show. He will make a believer out of you by the end of the concert, if you ever have an opportunity to see him, I would definitely take it. He's the closest thing that will ever see to David Bowie now. Oh yeah, and he was also a water bottle commercial with all the other Bowies. I think he was the clown.

"Station to Station" would be a great choice. A sectional tune running about 10 minutes, Bowie introduces the Thin White Duke character and uses plenty of occult imagery due to his fascination with the writings of Aleister Crowley at the time. From an album Bowie admits he barely remembered writing or recording at the height of his cocaine addiction. "TVC 15" is another highlight from this record, a quirky tune about a man's girlfriend literally being devoured by a television set. Yep....enjoy!

Touring the US in the mid 70's, Bowie was exposed to a lot of funk and soul. Disco was a thing at the time. He liked it, so he hired American players like drummer Dennis Davis, guitarists Carlos Alomar and Earl Slick, George Murray on bass and pianist Roy Bittan. The result was this epic track. Its completely different from anything he'd recorded previously. Funk and rock. Bowie loved this band so much he kept the rhythm section together for the next 20 years.

Great reaction from both of you. This is David Bowie during his Thin White Duke persona time, part of what he later called part of his lost year. And Station to Station is a brilliant album. The song, "Stay", came back into his setlists over the years. I saw and heard Bowie twice in 1983 (August and September; he shot the Serious Moonlight video concert over 2 September nights in Vancouver), and again in January 2004. "Stay" was not part of that 2004 setlist, but it is part of his "Live at the BBC, 2000" concert. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZoOxgJ5_qJWqptk

Bowie later dismissed Station to Station because drugs are bad. But I think every track is great. Earl Slick replaced the great Mick Ronson on guitar. Wild is the Wind (Nina Simone cover) and World on a Wing are ballads that showcase vocals. The title track and Stay are really heavy guitar sounds. Working with Igbo Pop and Tin Machine also shows Bowie’s fascination with heavy distorted guitar sounds.

Decent. It might be my favourite/probably is on this LP. Who am I kidding? It's all very fine. I believe this is the peak of the cocaine years, but tbf it didn't halt the genius. I really like the title track, Golden Years is immaculate and Wild Is The Wind could make a glass eye cry. This may be controversial but TVC15 didn't float my boat; I got that it was new, arty and spikey (aka disposable) and I might do new arty spikey dances/ Word On A Wing ain't great - feel free to let me know how mistaken I am. If your mate (the Bowie fan) hasn't heard this one before would you like a new mate?

The tour for this album, Station to Station was incredible, 1976. Not Earl Slick.

This entire album was recorded in a cocaine induced frenzy. Saw it live at the Boston Garden when it toured, it was called the Isolar tour, or the Thin White Duke tour, as that was his new persona. Opening was an avant- garde movie projection onto a giant screen, if I remember correctly it was filmed by either Picasso, or Dali. Very strange, but as the movie ended the opening wails of Carlos Alomars guitar on Station to Station set of an incredible concert. There is not a bad song on this album. TVC15 is literally about a cocaine induced hallucination of a TV coming to life. Play the whole album !!! 😉

the opening film was Buñuel & Dalí's 'Un Chien Andalou'

@@almondroca that’s it !!! Thank you. It was a very eclectic opening act for a concert. At the time the industrial strength, low quality smokable herb was being overtaken with a finer, much higher quality type, sourced much further south than Mexico 😉 if you catch my drift 😂 All I remember from the film was near the end where a man sliced an eyeball with a straight razor. That visual coupled with the herb influence, the slow rhythm at the start of Station to Station, and everyone in the first balcony tapping their feet in time, creating a definite bouncing of the balcony, was to say the least, intense. (me first row, direct line stage left) I do remember it also being the night of St Patrick’s day. So there was also other types of imbibing from the daytime that helped the intensify the experience. 😎
