Not only have I had a bootleg version of this since it was released in '76 but I was also in the audience for this show. Great memories.

If you ever get chance to read about this period of Bowie's life, I think you'd find it fascinating Randi ... he admitted several time that he didn't think he would "come out the other side" of his cocaine habit & paranoia ... whilst in L.A. he was living & surviving on a diet of peppers, milk & cocaine.

He was hallucinating, thinking he saw dead bodies falling past his windows and paranoid that witches were trying to steal his semen. He was a total mess, and I’m surprised he made it out of his addiction alive or without completely losing his mind. I know he went to Berlin to get clean, but what I don’t understand was, why did he bring the heroin addict, Iggy Pop, with him to what was, at the time, the heroin capitol of the world?

Got to see this musical genius in concert twice .First time station to station was performed and he blew my mind .it was love at first sight .then in 2004 .where he only proceeded to have gotten better and was once again spell bounding.Bowie and the musicians who worked with him over the years were all brilliant.

You can hear the clackety clack, clackety clack, of a train and the studio version has train whistles. He mentions going from Kether to Malkuth (part of the kaballah tree of life). The song may also refer to the stations of the cross. Bowie was known as the thin white Duke on this tour. He was fighting cocaine addiction during this time and he weighed about 90 pounds, infamously existing on a diet of milk, cocaine, and peppers. An incredible documentary called Cracked Actor was filmed about him during this period showing his paranoia and eccentricity. Definitely worth a watch.

Also on the Station to Station album is the song, Word on a Wing, a most beautiful hymn, showing Bowie’s spiritual side.

Word on a wing live in Paris 1999 is the most beautiful. He was crying out to God during this era 1976 to 1979. He had some horrible scares and almost died from his addictions. Such a great album though...rock art!!

In so many of Bowie's songs and increasingly in the Ziggy period, it is indeed interesting to note the way he slowly adds those instrumental layers at the beginnings. It always seemed to me that he wanted us to appreciate the individual parts and how they meshed, and not just the "wall of sound".

I got to see him on this tour in Chicago and it was surreal. Almost seemed that there was an aura surrounding him and we were in about the 7th row, just an incredible experience.

The music in the beginning is from the short movie “Un Chien Andalou” by Salvador Dali and Luis Buñuel. It shocked people in 1929 and did it again on Bowies tour 1976. I was there. Stockholm. He showed the movie, and played Kraftwerk before. I was very young, but I remember it clearly.

There's a rehearsal video of this where the guitarist does his feedback thing, and then the band come in and play through the extended intro, and bowie does his return of the thin white duke bit, and they go into the song proper, and then promptly breaks into laughter because he's messed something up, and they have to play it all again. That intro can never be too long for me though; Dennis Davis is amazing. The Throwing darts in lovers' eyes was something Alistair Crowley is supposed to have done; he also published a book called "White Stains." He was the self-styled" most evil man in England;" but he wasn't really; he was just a very naughty boy.

There is very little film from this period of Bowie's career. This video was brilliantly put together from various sources by a guy called Nacho who has done many other Bowie pieces. The Empire Pool Wembley (London) and actual rehearsals in Vancouver (Canada) are two. The audio is from Nassau (NY) from which a classic Bowie bootleg emerged that was later released officially and brickwalled (look that up), and minus some crowd noise which is a shame especially when Bowie walks on stage. When viewing the video page, look at the description and press on more where Nacho explains what he did.

Just wanted to add this is not "Psychedelia". It's inspired by early 70's "Krautrock" experimental music happening in West Germany back then. A main band to start with is "Kraftwerk" they did songs much like this.

LOL. Bowie may of mentioned cocaine. He had a bad cocaine addiction in the mid 70's. He said in interviews he did not remember recording the album "Station to Station". Amazing considering how focused and together his vocals are. After this album he moved to Berlin with friend Iggy Pop another well known singer. They shared an apartment there for several years. While there Bowie recorded his "Berlin Trilogy" albums. Three classic must hear albums. He also produced two albums for his friend Iggy Pop while there.

This is two separate clips and I think it's messing with the sound because this song is usually very clear. I think it's dress rehearsal footage matched to a live version from what I remember but I've never heard it this off before. Yep he said cocaine.

Been a Bowie fan since 1972 when I bought Ziggy Stardust. I'd suggest the studio album. Bowie should always be listened to through the full albums. He was a true artist and listening to him in bits and pieces diminishes what he did. The first 3 minutes of this have nothing to do with the song.
