The piano is played by Roy Bittan, Bruce Springsteen's pianist in the E Street Band. Looking forward to 'Stay'. Best song on the album.

@@bobholtzmann He's been a member of the E Street Band since 1975 and worked on a few of the true Bruce solo albums as well. Other than the song Born to Run which was recorded in 1974, he's the only pianist/keyboardist on the album. I don't know why Danny Federici wasn't involved as he was also in the Band.

As I'm sure you heard in this song, it's actually T-V-C-1-5. I'm sure most people will recommend one of his 'Berlin' albums if you're looking for more experimental fare (either _Low_ , _Heroes_ , or _Lodger_ ), but I'll suggest _Diamond Dogs_ , which is sort of a transitional album between his Ziggy Stardust and Thin White Duke personas. The album's Orwellian overtones are quite timely, and several tracks can be bunched together, particularly "Future Legend" and the title track, "Sweet Thing," "Candidate," and "Sweet Thing (Reprise)," and the whole 1984 sequence, which starts with "We Are the Dead" and runs through the rest of the album.

Diamond Dogs is my favorite "glam" Bowie album! So much of the music is so delightfully memorable. For a good time, listen to Diamond Dogs followed by Young Americans to experience how jarring Bowie's persona changes could be (and that he was able to pull off these changes so successfully).

Your talking is just fine. (TVC one - five is how he sings it.). Once you're done with this one, i think you should go back in time, and explore his first classic, the one that started his amazing 70's run, talkin' about the marvelous Hunky Dory. The keyboardist on this one, Roy Bittan, was first and foremost Springsteen's E Street Band keyboard player. Bowie covered one of Springsteen's song (was to be on Young Americans, but ended up on a box set), and they met during the recording. Then, Bittan was called to play on Station. There is experimentation of some sort on every Bowie album up to Scary Monsters, but the Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, Lodger) should give you your fill of ambient/sound experiments, if that is what you want next.

I'll always remember a quote from Bowie regarding his couple years in Berlin with Iggy Pop as they attempted to get the heroin monkey off their respective backs: "Yeah, it was Iggy and I trying to kick heroin in the heroin capitol of the world!"

TVC15 is an abbreviation for a 15 second TV commercial and was a single off the album and tour where he introduced us to the Thin White Duke a radical change of image that left all the ziggy lookalikes in the audience look like yesterday’s news. I was at the Wembley gigs and Victoria station when this album and tour were launched. Bowie himself handed me my copy of this album. The opening track white noise at the start is a steam train coming into or leaving a station. Imagine the sound of the wheels and steam engine

Actually, I requested this once before in a comment for another Bowie album. I'd love to hear your take on the REAL funk (plus soul and R&B) of Young Americans, and in particular, the tracks Win, Right, Somebody Up There Likes Me, Can You Hear Me? and Fascination. Love the way you honed in on the piano in TVC15 (TVC 1-5). When you mentioned saloon style, I agree. Very ragtime, indeed. Love your takes on just about everything!

Love the channel JustJP. First I heard TVC15 was when Dave was on SNL around '78 '79. He did this song an had a prop dog with a small working tv in its mouth. So cool. If you REALLY pay attention- the tempo speeds up gradually around the halfway mark. Of course this predates synthesized (metronome) click tracks. Maybe the coke kicked in! "Putting out fire/Cat People" with Stevie Ray Vaughan on 🎸... should be next.

At some point, you really need to do a first reaction to "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles off the album Revolver. It predates a lot of Prog Rock by years, but it is one of the most influential songs of that genre. I don't know why this Bowie song triggered my thoughts on that Beatles track, but it did... and you will be amazed how a song from 1966 sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday and would be considered any alternative band's MASTERPIECE.

Way ahead of its time, experimental - with its backwards tape-loops of Seagulls and everything else they felt like throwing at it - but still listenable. It's amazing they managed to make a great song, that still stands up 54 years later, when many other songs have since fallen by the wayside.

My favorite Bowie song! I think the line "Lets spend some time together" is a reference to the Rolling Stones (friends of Bowie) being told to sing "Lets spend some time together" on the Ed Sullivan TV show, instead of "Lets spend the night together". Bowie did a cover of that song.

Diamond Dogs really is a peak of innovation, in my opinion. There's some punk, some disco, some Broadway theatre music, some soul, some jazz, some of what I'd consider early trip-hop, some funk, industrial sounds, glam rock, and the straightforward rock n' roll sound mixed into a nice concept album package. Low will be great as far as ambient music goes, but half of it wasn't really composed by Bowie, but rather Brian Eno, and the vocals you came for will be extremely scarce. Honestly, it's not really all that diverse even though it can be considered very experimental. You'd get more of an immediate payoff from the Ziggy era. Or Heroes, which has a lot of the sounds of Low with more muscle, more vocals, and more Bowie.

When you're in the mood for some non-reaction listening, the "Stage" live album would be a good choice: loaded with great playing from a tight ensemble Bowie gathered, with an cool mix of songs - including a "ripper" version of this song - from his career (at that point). There are both an original version (as it was released, in a 2-LP format), and a "revised/expanded" one with bonus cuts/the songs in setlist order.

This song, along with the album, was produced by Bowie and Harry Maslin, about whom very little is known by too many. A native Philadelphian, Maslin engineered Barry Manilow's "Mandy" (1974), and the Dionne Warwick/Spinners hit, "Then Came You" the same year. In late '74, Bowie was recording "Young Americans" with Tony Visconti producing. As Visconti returned to London to mix the tracks, Bowie stayed back in NY (where parts of "YA" was recorded) to work with John Lennon. Bowie called Maslin and asked him to produce. In January 1975 at New York's Electric Lady studios, Maslin oversaw the recording of "Fame" with Lennon on guest vocals, as well as a cover of Lennon's own "Across the Universe". These sessions completed "YA." Bowie then asked Maslin to produce his "Station to Station" '75 sessions in LA, which brings us to "TVC 15." Maslin followed up his Bowie work with productions with several Arista Records artists, the Bay City Rollers, Melissa Manchester, and Eric Carmen, at the behest of Arista prez and record industry legend, Clive Davis. After his success with BCR, Manchester, and Carmen, Davis asked Maslin to produce the 1980 debut album for Air Supply. Multi-platinum sales of that album led Maslin to undertake production, at Davis' request, of Air Supply's next two albums, both of which garnered multi-platinum sales, and whelped five Top 5 singles in a row. Maslin worked with Bowie again in 2008 in the remastering and re-mixing of a special edition of "Station to Station" for the 2016 box set, "Who Can I Be Now?" It was reported at the time of the "Station to Station" release that Bowie wasn’t satisfied with the original mix; the updated version was an attempt to achieve the drier sound they’d been aiming for while recording it in 1975. www.theguardian.com/music/2016/aug/31/david-bowie-tvc-15-remix-who-can-i-be-now-unreleased-listen

That intro is absolutely classic and I was dying. 😂 This song probably did influence Poltergeist in some way. A lot of Spielberg films were influenced by 70s music. There was a bunch of Earth, Wind, and Fire inspiration in several of his films, including Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade and Jurassic Park. TVC-15 being the inspiration for the tv scene is highly likely.

Yay more Bowie! I love this song. I'll let others recommend you some weird stuff as I am not familiar with his entire discography. The most recent album I have by him is Let's Dance from '83. I'm sure things got "weirder" for him after those albums though Low is a bit more on the experimental side compared to his earlier albums. From that album I'd say Subterraneans is a good pick if you want "weird." Enjoy!

Low and Heroes are definitely David's MOST experimental albums and I think Low would delight you - both albums were released in 1977. I would also suggest 1.Outside which was a collaboration with Brian Eno (as was Low and Heroes) although I find the narrative accompanying the songs on that album jarred a little. 1970's The Man Who Sold The World is also experimental. If you are going to go down a Bowie rabbit hole you will be immensely rewarded - just avoid his three 1980's albums, Let's Dance, Tonight and Never Let Me Down as they were David pampering to a wider audience instead of doing what he did best. Love love love your analysis of everything - you really 'get' music - upwards and onwards.

He had an amazing run of great albums in those years. My favorites are Bowie's "Glam" period albums. "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars" and "Aladdin Sane". You should listen to them all the way through as they are classics full of great songs. "Diamond Dogs" is another one I recommend. They are very different then "Station" but are also excellent.

Try "The Man Who Sold The World" for a radically different side of Bowie. Although it's less than six years older than "Station to Station", the contrast is immense. Even Bowie's voice sounds like another singer altogether. It's in a much more heavy rock style but the songwriting is terrific, both musically and lyrically, and the whole album is ambitious, ground-breaking and very satisfying.

She's talking to her new friends... [Spoiler: They eventually suck her into their realm!] ;-] For you younglings reading this, "static" was something that you got on analog TVs when the channels shut down for the night, or on unused channels. Hey JP, thanks for returning to one of my all-time favorite albums. I love this song, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I always thought the live versions of it were a little bit better--just a little bit faster and with a fuller sound. I highly recommend you go to Scary Monsters next, or possibly Aladdin Sane. Those were two very different experiments that resulted in masterworks. His most experimental album was Blackstar, but you should digest more of his catalog before going there. Otherwise, the impact is lost when you do not have a full background. But it sounds like you are already leaning toward Low. If that is the case, then I suggest you do it by side, rather than by track. Anyway, great video and I'm looking forward to the next.

i would suggest Bowie's Low, "Heroes", perhaps Lodger, certainly Scary Monsters for Bowie at his most experimental. Go with Low as your next Bowie, as it followed Station To Station, which hinted at what he did with Low. Besides, he worked with Brian Eno and Robert Fripp on these albums, and that's always a good indication that interesting music is going to happen. Delightful reaction, as usual!

A recomendation.... Band - Tantra Album - Mistérios e Maravilhas "With the Roger Dean-esque art work, you know right away this is a prog album. Tantra were always touted as being Portugals #1 progressive rock band. With this album, I feel they rival many of the better known bands outside their country. Tantra's music is very well written, and the players are all exceptional. The recording and mixing on the original vinyl LP were as good as any at that time, which really helps when your dealing with a symph/prog album, played by musicians of this caliber. It's obvious these guys were influenced by the likes of Yes, Genesis, Gentle Giant, etc, yet they manage not to sound overly derivative of these bands." (Discogs Review to the album "Mistérios e Maravilhas" of Tantra.)

Talk all you want, its yout channel! I see people are all pointing to the Berlin era for experimentation, and they are right. However, I think Aladin Sane is very quirky and catchy . If you're going to do one of the Berlin albums, fine. But please do Aladin Sane at some point after. Thanks, I enjoy the channel the way it is...

Well, my first thought during your intro was the song IT'S NO GAME PT. 1 from SCARY MONSTERS has a perfect answer for you at its finale. So I'll go with that album next for your list although you'll find Low and Heroes to be partners in Bowie's leap to more experimental explorations. TVC ONE FIVE! is a blast and uniquely Bowie at the same time. There is a scary TV movie about a devouring TV called Videodrome that may have gotten some ideas from this song. Have an excellent day.

The piano style is reflective of New Orleans R&B. The style is mostly evocative of Professor Longhair. Fess as he was also known is mostly known for Big Chief and Go To the Mardi Gras. Fats Domino had a similar style. James Booker was ahmazing. Allen Toussaint, who wrote a huge collection of funky R&B tunes you know had a very smooth version of this style. The fess style of playing puts out that funky sound by including a mambo beat with jazz and Ragtime elements.. Bottomline the piano is an image to New Orleans piano.

Try Heroes. It’s from the Berlin period like Low. He was experimenting with the sounds of German music at the time. Brian Eno and Tony Visconti worked with him on all three of the Berlin trilogy. And the third album was Lodger.

Funky, yes. This album is credited with originating the genre of Blue-Eyed Soul. Bowie's pronunciation of the title gives it a Science Fiction edge, I find, so it lends the album continuity with much of the rest of Bowie's career. "Tee Vee Cee One Five".

This is one of the first records I ever owned. I was 15. Columbia record house. you could get like seven records for a dollar or some crazy thing, but then you had to buy records every month. Tvc-15 is my favorite track next to station the station. Low next logical choice. Scary monsters is said to be his most experimental. Any of the albums produced by Brian Eno.

The Berlin trilogy (Low, "Heroes" & Lodger) was not produced by Brian Eno but by Tony Visconti. Eno collaborated with Bowie on the songwriting for a few tracks and arranging all three albums but not on the production. On the other hand Eno co-produced Outside with David Bowie and David Richards in 1995.

I don't think you talk too much in the beginning. I like a little prelude. Not a Honda Prelude, although they are decent cars, and I like some old Hondas, In fact, I have a first-generation Honda CR-V that my grandmother bought new and for which I am planning an overland build. By prelude I meant more like an appetizer. Which reminds me of when I was sous chef at a French restaurant in the San Francisco bay area and we made a smoked duck & spinach ravioli appetizer with won-ton wrappers and a Medeira demi-glace. I should try making those raviolis on my first excursion when the overland build is finished. And when I was in high school I heard that TVC 15 was recorded live in studio in one take, but I haven't found confirmation of that.

I went to work yesterday... skipped Rush by the way, nuff said. Anyway, so started off playing a new to me Brazilian guitarist, pretty good. What next? Hmm, how bout Station to Station, yes, let’s listen Word on a Wing... heard all the album, great great stuff. Next, Heathen ( Bowie), New Live Bowie, Ouvrez Le Chien, Spooner Bar Mix ended up the day. Anyway ahgain, great choice today... yesterday I was saying mentally, he going to dig TVC15. I was thankfully correct, you never know on this channel. :~ My choice would be Heathen or Earthing, that’s just me but you want ambience... Eno produced Low, Heroes, Lodger are so edible. I know I’ll be ruled out, sfine. :~ I may play those three today... Roy Bittan replaced in the E Street Band, wait for it, David Sancious. I love this particular David Sancious album, Transformation (Speed of Love) Piktor’s Metamorphosis is a good start. Hint hint. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jH_dmnt7oNNnqaM Take care everyone, respect, masks and blessings will get us through, Peace and All kinds of Music (except)... nuff said.

Bowie at his most experimental is on the album Low or its "sequels" Heroes and Lodger. Or on the under-rated 1. Outside (1995). All of them were produced by Brian Eno. Also his last album Blackstar is a sort of a call-back to those records.

Why did you keep saying TVC fifteen instead of one five even after hearing the song? So odd! Thanks for the video. I'm a Bowie lover too, but I never thought 'Station To Station' ranked with his better albums. I'm sure you'll get a lot of people recommending that you react next to his 'Low' album which is his Berlin period masterpiece. You might even try something from Iggy Pop's 1977 album 'The Idiot' which Bowie produced with his own musicians. It's a key listen for Bowie fans of this period especially. Thanks for the vid and the meta humor.
