@@kdphotos4691 backing vocals instead of a choir... Article online: "Vandross, Cherry and Clark would turn out to be one of the driving forces on the album, frequently taking the lead vocal role and allowing Bowie to slip into the background for the very first time. Indeed, it was Vandross who came up with the chorus for ‘Young Americans’. As the singer recalled in 1987, he approached Clark during a session and said: “What if there was a phrase that went, ‘Young American, young American, he was the young American - all right!’ Now, when ‘all right’ comes up, jump over me and go into harmony.” Bowie apparently overheard the conversation and ran with the idea."

Young Americans is my favorite Bowie album. Not a bad song on the album. "Young Americans is the ninth studio album by English musician David Bowie, released on 7 March 1975 by RCA Records. The album marked a departure from the glam rock style of Bowie's previous albums, showcasing his interest in soul and R&B."

Another great artist I grew up with. David Bowie was an English singer-songwriter & actor. He constantly reinvented himself to stay current over nearly 5 decades. His first big hit was "Space Oddity" in 1969. He has had a lot of great songs including "Starman", "Ziggy Stardust", "Rebel Rebel", "Young Americans", "Changes", "Fame", "Golden Years", "Ashes To Ashes", "Under Pressure", Let's Dance", "Modern Love", "China Girl", "Heroes" etc.

I'm 65-years-old, but my mind sure doesn't feel like it is. I came of age in the 70s and I have owned everything David Bowie released on every format. Started cranking up the 8-tracks in my cars in the early 70s! He's always been my favorite and I love almost everything coming out of that era- I even call the 70s decade the "Golden Years" in honor of his song. This particular song, Young Americans" has withstood the years for me and with me. If I had to pick one song for the top (impossible), this would be it! A LITTLE TRIVIA--> Not once in this song will you hear "Young Americans". It's always "Young American". I really appreciate your reaction to this one! THANKS! 😀🤟 💛

David Bowie, as a songwriter, shares a thing with Bob Dylan (wherever you place them on the scale of talent, and personally I'd put David not too much beneath Bob, as if anyone even comes close to Dylan): they both were/are able totally to imagine and inhabit the thoughts, feelings, hopes, fears of characters outside themselves. I think that's rare. Many revered singer-songwriters (James Taylor, Carole King) draw on their own experiences. Bowie is able to invent a character and see through that person's eyes.

I was 6 years old when this came out. I liked the music and singing very much at the time, but didn't understand the lyrics. I do now! He'd been a really big fan of the US as a child in the UK, and the reality of what the place was actually like hit him hard when he could finally come here, which informs the lyrics to this song. If you ever read about just how personally fucked up he was between 1974 - 1977, the caliber of his work is truly amazing.
