From the album 'The Wisdom Line'
The song is inspired by both the dark days of the opening of the Canning Stock Route south east of the Kimberly in the film, 'Putuparri and the Rainmakers', and about time spent beneath the big skies and endless salt lake of Wilkinkurra (Lake Mackay) near Kwirrikurra with some of the Papunya Tula artists including Matthew Pinta. Matthew sets the song up with the story of Umari, the permanent water hole, near the border of the Northern Territory and Western Australia, a permanent water source that debunks the myth of a nomadic desert people behind the notion of terra nullius. The song features the legendary Frank Yamma in the chorus, rejoicing in the finding of a desert water hole. Frank and Matthew are cousins. 'Permanent Water' also contains musical contributions from Simon Edwards on bass (Talk Talk), Martyn Barker on percussion (Shriekback), Michael Barker on drums and JP Shilo on guitar. Another wonderful mix by Ian Caple. The film comprises re-edited off cut footage from the Putuparri film, directed and edited by by Nicole Ma and Uri Mizrahi with thanks to and appearances by Putuparri Tom Lawford.
The song is dedicated to the lives of two recently passed friends, the wonderful documentary filmmaker John Moore, with whom David worked with on four films including “Putuparri" and Wangkatjungka actor and comedian Ningali Lawford (sister of Tom), with whom David worked with on "Bran Nue Dae”,"The Circuit" and "Putuparri and the Rainmakers". Both are sadly missed.
