I done this same thing, I have a David brown 885 I’ve been driving since I was a kid recently wasn’t thinking and I put some 15w40 in it.. started working land at the beginning of the year and noticed it was blowing a little blue and white smoke and in 30 years I had never seen it do that. Keep driving it for a few months and it kept getting worse and worse long story short realized the oil was wrong put the correct back in with some Lucas oil treatment and it’s ran fine ever since I got lucky.

ive just spent 120 GBP changing the axle and differential oil in my Thwaites dumper but ive long since forgotten what that engine oil cost for my DB880. There is lots of different types/grades of oil and for a reason!

Hi. Great video. Thanks for sharing. You mention thick mineral oil in message to someone. My 880 leaks lots of oil. Probably needs engine work. But I would try thicker oil. What grade oil do u recommend. Thanks

the manual recommends SAE30 grade oil which is what i use but due to the engine wear i will be topping up with SAE40 grade from now on. i was ploughing recently and she was weeping oil everywhere!

My dad has the exact same tractor (video of rebuild is on KZbin), but it started leaking oil again. What rear oil seals are you using for the crank shaft? Any instructions on how to mount it?

this is the early 4cylinder engine, (1962) it doesn't have a mechanical seal. it has a labyrinth seal which is a reverse spiral to direct the oil back into the engine. this engine needs to have the old thick mineral oil to function correctly and not leak at the gearbox. hope this helps, any more questions PM me

@@rtv8055thanks, unfortunately it's still leaking and he took the tractor apart again. Do you have a part number for that seal perhaps?

@@woutergeboers7470 hello, its not actually a physical seal that can be changed, the labyrinth is machined into the crankshaft
