I know what you mean, there's time I want to crack on with the work but the weather stops me sometimes, other times it my own fault, like when I forget to charge the battery, again, and still expect the tractor to start. Nevermind we'll get there hopefullt tomorrow. many thanks Barry

G day Barry, Im running behind on the 990, where you had trouble with the plastic then wood when undoing the pinion nut, I use a stick of 40/60 solder doubled over, it is nice and soft but it locks the gears up. Boy Im glad you decided to go into the box for a look.

not as glad as me! I think this would have destroyed the gearbox had the outer race dropped out, don't think it would have done the castings any good either, so a mega thank you to you and the others for pushing me in the right direction and getting it stripped. many thanks Lance Barry

That most surely would not have been good so glad you discovered the situation!!

That certainly did look like a ball ache but as I said before it would pay to strip it down and it certainly has paid you'd have been kicking yourself for evermore hopefully it won't be too expensive to repair but either way it wil be perfect once done 😊

I cringe at what could have happened if I put it in and hadn't noticed the bearing, it certainly would have been a very expensive repair many thanks jon Barry

hello Mr. Barry...my name is Iulian...I'm from Romania...I really need your help.....I have 4 David Brown tractors at home...I'm a big fan of this brand. ...I have a 770...780...880 and an 885....my problem is with the 770...the engine block broke and its gearbox is the one with 12 speeds.... .on the 780 I have a 6-speed gearbox... my question is.... can I put the gearbox from the 770 on the 780? any little information is very helpful... have a wonderful day

Hi Lulian, I'm not sure is the easy answer, if the engine type is the same in both tractors and/or the bolting flanges are the same on the block and the axle, then I can't see why not, try your gearbox lid on the existing casting as you'll need three gearsticks, if it fits, good. If not you'll need to change the gearbox main castings. If any of our viewers reading this knows a definate answer please pop a reply to lulian below. An interesting project! I've just had a quick look on the tractor data site and they recon it's the same gearboxs right through to the 880 so should be good to go many thanks and let us know the outcome please Barry
