David Cassidy interview - Rove Live - 17 September 2002

Many moons ago I transferred a whole bunch of VHS on to disc. I thought that since this is a music based channel and that stuff was just languishing there, I thought I would put that footage on this one.

David was a very lovely man. We met at a Hotel I own. He was a beautiful soul, kind, loving, and so very intelligent. He is the man you see in interviews, and so so much more. He was so much fun to be around. We spent so much time together, and he was just a person, kind and loving. We stayed friends until the end. He called me and I went out to be with him at his end of life, Rest Easy David🙏🏻✨ So much more I could say about David, He was just a real person💯💯

What happened? He was so successful, he transitioned his career, wrote, acted, performed, produced, was interviewed all over the world and was so respected...was healthy to maintain that and then he starts spiraling due to alcohol. He said on Dr. Phil he started heavily drinking in 2002. And just wrecked himself? I don't understand. Never seemed to be under the influence. I mean, he had his own plane before anyone did.

I'd known David since 1972. We had a wonderful, private, relationship that lasted from then until he passed away. I was at the hospital until the got ready to induce him into a coma. We said our goodbyes and I left so the family could be there and not have to deal with certain ones. David was a very special man, loving, caring, sensitive, the best man I've ever had love me. I've never met anyone like him since then. I know we'll be together again someday but I miss him terribly. Don't believe the crap you read about him in trash magazines. He truly was one great guy 😊

Pamela Uruburu ....when he went into the hospital, 4 says before he died, I was praying that he would be ok. I couldn't believe it when I heard on the news that he passed. Like you, I have been doing everything David Cassidy since the 21st of November. Watching KZbin videos, I bought some CD's and a DVD of one of concerts & am in the process of reading his book: Could it be forever. After this book, I plan on getting the book, C'mon get happy. Like you did. The DVD of one of David's concerts that I bought the week after he passed was only $32.00. Now, on Amazon, it costs almost $200.00!! I am having an awful emotional time dealing with his death. There will NEVER be anyone else like David. He was a one of a kind. Great singer, musician, actor.....he was all that & so much more. How many musician's still have woman crooning over them who are in their 40's, 50's & 60's? David sure did!! Everyday I think about how happy that he made people feel thru his music, singing & acting. I know that is what he wanted to do-make people happy. It makes me cry knowing how rotton people treated him. His managers (& people who we're supposed to be helping him) when he was touring in his early 20's stealing from him and all three of his wives treating him SO bad, but especially his last one-Sue. She got more then 2 million in the divorce settlement, and the had the gaul to show up at his death bed. I think she wanted to see what else she could get from him!! It all just makes me so sad. I often cry when I think about how awful live treated him.

The book you have is basically the same book as C'MON GET HAPPY (without the photos). The person I hold most responsible is his father, Jack Cassidy. He abandoned David at such a young age, and was intensely jealous of his success. Ironically, David ended up an alcoholic just like him. In the book David mentions that he was in analysis for several years several times a week, but I think his issues with his father ran way too deep. As for his third wife, Sue Shiffrin, I'm not sure what to think, nor do I feel it's necessarily my place to think anything. Divorces always get ugly, no matter who you are. She posted on FB recently that despite what David's fans make think of her (and they've said some pretty harsh words), no one was inside their marriage, and no one knows the joy and the pain that they shared over their 26 year relationship. She added that no one sees her crying in quiet moments, etc. Initially, I too felt the way you did about wife #3, but upon reflection, I do feel for her too, and I think for the sake of their son and their long relationship, it speaks well of her to be at David's deathbed rather than ill. As I was reading his autobiography, it occurred to me how much she DID put David and his career first. First LA, then NY for Blood Brothers, then as soon as that closed, they were uprooted again to Vegas. That's not easy to do, especially while raising a young child. As for the settlement you mentioned, that DOES sound awfully vindictive. Then again, I'm sure his well publicized DUIs were a source of embarrassment and pain for her as well as for him. I also wonder if perhaps infidelity was an issue. As you know, from what you've read, David admittedly had a voracious sexual appetite, and I can't help wondering if perhaps he cheated on her. There are two sides to every story, and we only know his side. (By the way I'm the same person you replied to-I just switched to my personal account.)

I also think that a large amount of David's issues stemmed from his dad. I think his dad was a very bad influence on him and he messed him up at a very young age. I think that started even before he divorced David's mom, Evelyn Ward.

This is a great interview,David looked relaxed,and laughed several times while being interviewed,no one had a laugh quite like David's,very infectious,you just wanted to laugh with him. Somebody commented that David always spoke about the same things,I really don't,think that was Davids fault,I believe that's what producers/directors of shows where he was being interviewed wanted from him,that's what they thought the public wanted to hear,so quite often when you listen to his interviews over the years,he took a big sigh before replying,and you could almost read his mind saying,"not again" . I loved the part when he was shown the items the fans had bought in,he seemed to instantly switch into a different mode,because it was the fans they were talking about,he was well known and respected for the love of his fans,they meant the world to him. Rest peacefully sweet David,your fans still love you so much.

I agree, the repetitive topics came from the repetitive questions in the interviews. I think that most of his life was good, he had many successes over his teen idol, a lot of what he could be proud of and resisted his abuse for most of his life. And maybe we should remind him like this: the most beautiful guy of his time, who captivated millions with his unique voice when he was the superstar of the 70s and a fascinating good musician who went his way afterwards! RIP David Cassidy.

This is absolutely adorable! Weird, but cute, hearing the f-bomb come out. I know full well he had his faults & he was unable to overcome his demons, but interviews like this one endeared him so much to me. I did get to see him perform live once, but he had laryngitis & did not come out after the show, which is understandable. I just wish I could've met him. He lived to make people happy & he is truly missed.

That was because he was an addict. Sadly they become sad and bitter and it is always someone else's fault. Just part of the disease.

You have to understand that alcohol and a combination of pain medications which he was taking for his arthritis is a lethal combination and it reeks havoc on personalities . . . I truly believe it was the alcohol, it being genetic and his sad relationship with his father that did him in; He was on that sitcom, Ruby and the Rockits and you know he was coming out of a bad bout with alcohol and working with his brothers helped a lot. By the time he was on Dr. Phil I knew he was lying . .. I knew he was still under the influence. There is something about a person's mannerisms that change and you know, especially having dealt with one or two addicts in my lifetime . .. .it makes you do things you wouldn't ordinarily attempt. I mean he lived sixty plus years and he never had DUI's . . . anyway . . . I wish they had a liver for him; perhaps he would have been able to turn his life around and live another 20 years.

Dementia symptoms were taking root, dear, which were exacerbated by alcohol, which he may well have been using to self medicate as it was undoubtedly confusing, as well as scary as hell.

I agree with rose petal I have been listening to lots of interviews since his death and they are basically all the same , almost as if they are scripted.The same themes, his Dad, his identity issues etc. Going over the same stories his acting in bonanza etc and his retirement from being a. Teen idol. The best is on a you tube video title Benezra that’s slightly more revealing . A very sad and lonely man for much of his life I think.A tragedy really as he really was breathtakingly gorgeous and super talented

David's fame came really fast and he was very young I can try to understand what he went through. I don't think as people have said that he got a free pass . He suffered alot .I think his only relief was booze. How many out there could of handled what he did l think he really got in to it at first who wouldn't. David had money and alot of Women. But with all that fame comes a price.

I was eight when I saw David Cassidy in concert and I guess I was in love with Keith Partridge...ever since I have started watching these clips from KZbin I, of course am older but I get the impression that he feels like that time that image was an albatross to him..when he was so loved and appreciated..am I wrong when I say this? think i can relate to this; i was about 9or10 approx when watching PF and i think too i was mad keen on Keith and really never knew DC and i get a bit put off seeing some interviews he's done; he was sometimes just not nice; but then at least he was fake he was who he was be that good or bad....and i have to wonder if he too (like his father) had bipolar just because he seemed either so up or so down (or that could have been the booze)? Truthfully have never read his book/s so that might give a better idea of who he was....and sorry to say as much as it's sad that he's gone, i'm not sure that i'm all that keen on a lot of his music-don't get me wrong he was very talented but i grew up when he was not around much in the media or seeing his interviews or concerts (being in Australia we didn't hear much at all about him throughout the '80's 90's or 00's etc) i love watching the re-runs of PF probably because that's who i relate to :(

I think I've realised the same thing. I loved the Keith character & I guess the innocence surrounding the age, though I know he was older than portrayed. But he seemed soft & gentle. In latter years he seemed hardened. The rocker in him came out & his penchant for leather clad rock girls. Perhaps he should have married Suzi Quatro?

His interviews are always the same theme...never get into talking about EFX, Blood Brothers, his solo albums, I Write The Songs, Lying to Myself: his comeback hit, his TV movies and a very fun film called Spirit of 76 ( on KZbin). What a shame the interviews can't be more creative. The Platinum album he refers to is probably Then and Now...he simply had a much bigger recording career in the UK...

I’ve watched several interviews of DC. He was just as self absorbed as his father was. He gets a pass though, he was a troubled man who, in my opinion, never loved himself or believed in himself. RIP

Interesting ...as I think that he thought he didn’t live up to his potential which frustrated him...if he had just stayed a pop crooner and just did that he might have had the best personal life ever but instead he wanted more ...in reality this proved to be his undoing.

zazz63 I agree with you. I think, towards the end, it seemed as though he hit the main bullet points over and over in interviews. It makes sense, too, with him having dementia. I'd imagine, as his memory was just starting to fail, he had to revert to what he could remember.

He was not self absorbed. You may not be totally self assured if you had a father like his. I disagree though, he knew he was talented. He just wasn't allowed at that young age to use all his talent. David was a great person and a wonderful performer.

Ruby Townsend I totally agree with you. This is a fun interview - being interviewed by someone way younger...and really not part of the Cassidy followers...David is very clever, he humors Rove about success, fame etc...David knows it is the same old interview structure. David was such a mega-talent and really wasn't given credit for his brilliance. I don't see him as self absorbed, he is not smutty; doesn't want to offend and always comes across softly spoken, easy to interview and willing to open up about good and bad times. I think what is interesting is that David always gets asked the same old questions; you'd think someone would do some research and try to look into something different - the interviewers made David always reflect on TPF or the naked photo or how he found out he was starring with Shirley or about his dad. David had so much more to give and to say but no-one took the time - his concerts, his young family, his horse breeding. Unfortunately everyone seemed to stay and drag him back to the past. David's personality and love of performing really came out in his book and concerts ( wish I had seen him live - big regret!)...but really...as far as superstars to interview...he was a dream...he wasn't arrogant...just an open book. We have lost a real treasure. Miss him dearly - coming up to one year anniversary...David is still on our mind and in the hearts of many fans - we the fans know what we had and what we have lost.

Rose Petal - I met my idol a couple of years back. I even got to do a couple of TV interviews with that person. Got taken out to dinner (surprisingly at a pretty cheap restaurant a couple of times (with the entourage). Was offered a ride in their private plane. This person was very good to me in lots of ways, offered me holidays in his/her (dont want to identify the person) private residence that they owned in different countries. I met several of this person's staff and they were all very nice to me. I got offered a job. BUT I COULDN'T BACK OUT FAST ENOUGH. The public image and the person were two different people. The public image only existed in my imagination and on the screen - despite the fact that there was no pretense in all the screen interviews. I grieve the loss of the imaginary image. I sometimes read the books written by this celebrity hoping to connect with my imaginary idol. The real person behind the image will always respond to me and remind me that they are my friend. But I dont have my idol any more.. I likewise adore the beautiful David Cassidy image, but i can be pretty sure that its nothing like the real David Cassidy - and that you couldn't take a guess at what the real David Cassidy is like. Nothing like the dream I can be pretty sure. Remember that he was divorced three times and three women didn't want him.

"Rock ne Baby" is sooo hot ... after the death i found out other songs like "The last Kiss" ... and i took a look on his life ... i am interestet in astrology ... and sun and moon of him are totaly different in the kind of energy ... i think ... it was not easy for him at all ...
