Considering what David always said about his father, that he never put his arms around him and said he was proud of him,I think he answered Jack's questions very diplomatically, very professionally. There is no doubt about it you could hear the sarcasm in his father's voice all the way through the interview, only reinforcing everything David spoke about, and wrote about concerning Jack. He asked very pointed questions, such as how he felt about his parents being divorced, but I believe David gave very honest answers back, get the feeling David was glad when the interview was over. Still miss you beautiful man.

Hi Sandra Paul you deserve congrats on recovering this interview you sure picked upon the sarcasm in this interview fancy Jack cassidy doing this it sounds to me he tried to embarrass his own son I think David handled himself against his father very well you did a marvellous job picking up on the sarcasom it's just so sad congratulations great interview David did well he's to be admired for his patience during interview well done God bless cheers

ditto, I feel the same way...David was marvelous, in fronting Jack's remarks, and why did Jack interrupt him so? was quite domineering, even here, and I caught the undertones of jealousy, from Jack. Lovely of beautiful David to express his love, regardless

I had an alcoholic parent. One quite brilliant like Jack and jealous too. I am also from a divorced home and I relate to this so much. We lost our Dad's so early and both had second families and I never saw much of him. I try to think of the happy times there were a few RIP Cassidy men. God Bless you both.

I originally found this on KZbin approx 2 years ago, and downloaded it onto my computer. Once downloaded it did not retain the name of the person who first put it together under their name on their KZbin page/channel. I understand it had more recently "disappeared" from public view (the original) so I uploaded it from my computer so that fans who hadn't heard it before, could enjoy it.

Thank you so much for posting this video Sandra. I've heard of it but never heard the actual interview until now. Wow! My heart bled for David to go through all those gruelling questions from his dad. Almost his dad's way of telling David to his face on camera how much he despised David due to his jealousy of David's career. I am a little stunned with the awkwardness of the interview, now that I heard it, but so impressed how David handled each question with such raw but gentle emotion. Truly Jack Cassidy was a bully and it was quite clear how mean he was to David at times. David's level of integrity always portrayed a humble, gentle, forgiving, loving soul. I think that was the most difficult facet of David's life was to agonize over the loss of bonding with his father. It left David with a constant void he could never fill. Bless your dear heart sweet David. I truly hope you can feel all the love of all of us--your fans--all the way to heaven. You are always loved, forever. 💞

It's so touching to hear them sing together! Jack sounded genuine to me when he said he loved David! I wish there was the video of this so we could see their body language when Jack said that! Of course, he could be doing it as a performance for the camera and the audience, but I think he sounded truthful.

Heard the interview before but never in full. Love it. Thank you for posting it. I've seen two photos from the show. Jack & David singing together and the photo of when David comes out on stage. You would think they would come out hugging each other not Jack shaking hands with David. I know David always wanted Jacks approval which he never got and that really heartbreaking for David. It seemed hard for David when Jack asked him what he thought about the divorce. But I think David handled it as best as he could.

David is such an advanced soul, feeling so much sadness for his situation as I had a father that was quite difficult too.... these questions his dad asked and the way David answered them show what a gentle and forgiving soul he is. I wish you could know what a great impact you had on me back in the early 70s, I was 13 at the perfect time when you were at the height of your powers - and I was lucky enough to see you at Wembley. Greetings. As a musician I appreciate the kind words for Mr. Cassidy (David, that is). And “Danny Boy” was a beautiful and marvelous choice. I do question the use of the word sarcasm for Mr. Jack Cassidy, as I thought sarcasm concerns word choice, facial expressions (not seen), as well as tone of voice. But there is a studied quality to his accent, something like British nobility. However, sarcasm as such I do not hear. I would be interested in what someone else thinks. Thanks for posting this recording.

Thank you for posting this. I think David seemed very nervous around Jack and softened and quieted his voice in deference to Jack when they sang together. Hi everyone 😊 thanks for your lovely comments, I'm glad you all enjoyed the audio interview. What I did find out is that this particular episode is from Season 8 of The Merv Griffin Show, episode #241, originally shown on August 26th 1971 on USA TV. I did have a look on Amazon for that particular season but no luck. The website www.tv.com still have that episode for viewing I believe but not for anyone outside of USA unfortunately. I'm not sure how the original you-tuber was able to access the full audio interview between Jack & David, as once I saved it to my computer, her username wasn't retained. Enjoy & save if you can before it gets pulled - but if it does I can put it up again - unless I get told not to 😁 xx

I tried checking again last night, but the entire tv.com website unfortunately seems to be down, although the links are still there in Google. There are videos of several episodes of The Merv Griffin Show on KZbin, but unfortunately, not this one (which is S8, E241). Although we don't hear her here, Shirley was apparently a guest on this episode as well. I don't see the show currently airing in reruns on American TV or any streaming services, either. (I do see a site called 123movies4u that claims to have it available for download, but man oh man, it looks shady. As in potential computer virus or browser hijack material. I don't dare try it!) I'm going to keep looking, though. I'd love to see their faces as they sing "Danny Boy" together - not to mention during the entire interview itself! In the meantime, thank you SO MUCH for posting this, Sandra. As mich as we'd love to have the video as well, the audio alone is a priceless gem, and a rare glimpse into David and Jack's relationship!

Wow. That must of hit him in the gut. How sad that Jack Cassidy didn't sing with David more and had he lived longer, he could of sang with his other Sons. It's sad that David didn't do something like Lisa-Marie did. Get a pre recorded record / song that Jack sang and then added David's. Shirley stated that Jack had a great voice. And that infact Jack taught her somethings She could do with her voice. That is one thing about David, he always tried to be respectful. And he usually would tell the truth, as long as it didn't hurt anyone. He never said a bad thing about his Wives. And he still loved both his Parents, even though, he went to live with his Maternal Grandparents. While his Parents were out doing the Careers. He didn't even know his Parents were divorced for close to 4 years. Until one his friends told him. He had a lot of love and respect for his Grandparents too. He stated in several interviews that his Grandfather would do things with him. But it was difficult because of him being older. And his Grandparents were very faithful with going to Church every Sunday and to Bible Study every Wednesday. It's a shame the video isn't available.
