A novel about a poor orphan named who grows up to become a writer, David Copperfield by Charles Dickens is one of the most popular novels in English.
In David Copperfield, Dickens looks at his own life and, once again, tells us that good characters will suffer a lot but, in the end, will be rewarded for their hard work, tenacity, and virtue.

Good Review. Copperfield is one of the top 30 all time, by any measure. Pooing it says more a out the reader than the book. I have it 22 on my goat list between Nathan The Wise a d Saramago's Gospel According To Jesus Christ.

i'm reading David Copperfield at the moment and you are completely right. I mean, is not that awful book, but it is totally boring, the story as a whole has no plots enough to make it that interesting. The parts where David spend days at Mr. Peggotty´s house or when he is studying to become an attorney made me so tired that i wanted to immediately drop the book off and start another one.

It is a shame because the beginning of the novel is so promising!

I've yet to finish a Dickens book. I even gave up reading Great Expectations, supposedly his best book. His writing style is not for me. May try Trollope next

I'm also not a huge fan of Dickens. I enjoyed David Copperfield more than you did, but still, I can't quite get along with his writing style. Whenever I'm reading Dickens, I always imagine him sitting at his desk, writing with a smirk on his face and thinking:"Oh, I'm so clever, this sentence is so great, and this character is so perfect, I'm going to wow them all with this." I don't know why, but that's the picture I have in my head.😁 I've heard a lot of people say that people who don't like Dickens as much as everyone else should try Anthony Trollope from the same period. Have you read any books by him? I was thinking of giving him a try this year and wonder if I'd like him more.

Next time I read Dickens I'll think of your mental image of him! Haha. I haven't read anything by Anthony Trollope yet, but I am hoping to read at least one of his novels before the end of this year.

Thumbs up for an honest review 👍👍 I wonder whether there is any worth reading Dickens' novel? I read A Christmas Carol not long ago and was just OK. Now I'm planning to read a longer Dicken's novel and am in two minds between Great Expectations and A Tale of two cities? Have you read them? Which one would you choose?

Thanks, Carlos! I have read and enjoyed Great Expectations, so I would recommend that one. There's even an old review of it here on my channel. A Tale of Two Cities is on my list but I don't know when I'll get to it and cannot recommend it.

I read the abridged version of David Copperfield when I was a kid .. now I don't remember what happens in the book so I want to read the original version. Plus Barbara Kingsolver has an upcoming novel which is inspired by David Copperfield so there's another reason for me to read the Dickens haha.

I hope you enjoy it more than I did! I can see how an abridged version would be more gripping. I've never read anything by Barbara Kingslover. Are you a fan?

@@JuanReads The abridged version I read was with illustration so I guess the kid-me probably enjoyed it 🤣 I enjoyed two of Kingsolver's books and I think her writing feels comforting (I like the nature + family writing). The Poisonwood Bible is lovely!

The only Dickens novel I have ever truly enjoyed was A Tale of Two Cities and that was due in part to watching Wishbone as a kid. I want to like him more, I really do. I mean, many of my favorite writers are huge Dickens fans and rave about how his writing influenced theirs. The thing is, he's just so boring for me. his writing is the epitome of "I'm so clever" while at the same lollyagging and meandering on every little thing. If I do decide to give Dickens another chance, however, I'm thinking Bleak House is the way to go (maybe).

I've also tried hard to like Dickens's writing. I will read more by him, certainly Bleak House, but not anytime soon.

I just wanted Dora to "just die already" she lingers far too long in the book. There are good scenes and exchanges but it does suffer from being like many Dickens' novels flabby in the middle. The problem being the sales in monthly parts which means that he wanted more parts to make more money. It does benefit from being a single narrator and for me more coherent than some of the other novels.

Dickens really knew how to make the most of the serialized form!

@@JuanReads He ran several magazines that serialized his and other authors novels. His relationship with Elizabeth Gaskell was slightly difficult at times when he wanted to edit / direct her writing.

Its so interesting that even though English is my third language I could totally devour the book in a week. seeing these commesnts by short attention span rotted brain of social media kids makes me laugh. Go read your fancy contemporary 2 pennies worth of books that come and go with your new whims for your smartphone brand to make a full clown of a book reader. You never learned another language perhaps in your life to appreciate to adapt yourself with the various styles or never accumulated iq points in your reading journey to challenge your imagination thats why it looks boring to you even if you are "reading" the vivid images portrayed via words by one of the greatest writer of that genre ever lived in history. thats why you dont understand nor appreciate classic long lived Novels that dont wait for your 2 cents of youtube opinion to be remarked as the greatest among English literature. The idiocracy is real.
