David Copperfield, in full The Personal History of David Copperfield, novel by English writer Charles Dickens, published serially in 1849-50 and in book form in 1850. David Copperfield has always been among Dickens’s most popular novels and was his own “favourite child.” The work is semiautobiographical, and, although the title character differs from his creator in many ways, Dickens related early personal experiences that had meant much to him-his work in a factory, his schooling and reading, and (more cursorily) his emergence from parliamentary reporting into successful novel writing.

What a terrible mother. She allows him to be beaten by his new stepfather then tells him “try to be better”??? What a spineless woman. She made the worst decision of her life by allowing the attentions of the wrong man. She was financially stable….she married a cold man who did not love her nor her child, when there was no need for her to. She turned a house of light into a house of darkness and terror.

The incredible voice of Peter Woodthorpe(1931-2004) jumped out at me while listening to this. Here he plays Mr. Creakle but I knew him as Golum / Smeagol from the BBC radio play of Lord of the Rings from 1978. It appears this was his last performance on film.

Seid nicht zu ungerecht zu seiner Mutter, sie war eine sehr junge Witwe und Mutter was bei uns heutzutage wohl mit einer Teeniemutter vergleichbar wäre. Sie hat ihren, offenbar sehr geliebten, Mann schon vor der Geburt ihres ersten Kindes verloren. Eine Witwe zu sein hieß damals für eine Frau Verarmung, sie hatte Glück damit dass sie genügend Geld hatte aber sie war eine sehr junge Frau die alle Entscheidungen alleine treffen musste von diesem Tag an, ohne Eltern, ohne Mann, nur mit einem kleinen Jungen und zum Glück hatte sie Peggotty. Ich denke ihr fehlte die Liebe eines Mannes, sie dachte Mr.Murdstone mit seiner Reife und seinem Charme wäre ein guter Ratgeber, Ehemann und Vater für seinen Jungen. Sie war viel zu jung um seinen wahren Charakter zu erkennen, außerdem war ihr Vermögen sehr klein sie konnte sich nicht vorstellen dass er sie nur des Geldes wegen heiraten würde, sie war naiv, unschuldig und hilflos. Im Buch war sie noch mehr wie ein Kind als hier im Film.

Now i see thet this kids in this 21st century era have more freedom snd have and enjoy more happiness compare to the kids back on late 1800s thst experience such abuse and no voice to fight for themselves snd their rights. And experience new best technological things. (As a personwho does love history this is a great novel to analyze and compare both eras advantages and disadvantage)

Demon Copperhead written by Barbara Kingsolver. It's basically David Copperfield reimagined and set in current day Appalachia and includes child neglect, drug addiction and poverty and the resilience of people who survive. I think it won the Booker Prize.
