David Crosby is an example of a very talented guy with two opposing, powerful, sides. It has been said that "a strong man has strong weaknesses". That's Croz. He descended to the lowest depths of human manifestation: was profoundly addicted to heroin, served several jail sentences, and came back, not only to the land of the living, but he continues to make music well into his 70's. He beat the devil. As anyone paying any attention can see from these videos, he's smart, funny, and full of wisdom. You go, Croz! Much love to you!

Excellent interview. David Crosby passed away at 81 several months ago, and his lasting memory is being shared among many who loved his music, specifically with the Byrds, CNN, and CSNY, but also as a solo musician who had contact with Paul Kantner and the PERRO crew on the Airplane that took off around 1965 and went from there. With all of us as passengers to a degree to be determined like everything else - over time. I have seen interviews lately of significant people in Crosby's life, like Joni Mitchell and Graham Nash which give encouragement to my overall perspective, even as we work our way through this significantly determinate time in United State History.

I will share with you guys the sage advice I got from my recovered heroin addict friend Ted in 1988, both of us musicians: "Josh, don't ever try heroin. You'll LOVE it. It's better than any orgasm, any music, any food you ever tasted. It's unbelievable." All these years later, I think that's a much better deterrent than "You'll be an addict, you'll end up in jail, you'll end up with hepatitis, you'll steal from everyone you ever met and end up dead or living under a bridge."

I think David Crosby hit it right on the nose with his answer to the last question: "I still believe in America as an idea". That's what continues to make America an underdeveloped country: it is too busy making money, sports, and elitism its top priorities to see where it is lacking--from the top down. America is in denial of its shortcomings (i.e. good-quality healthcare and education) because it refuses to fix them and as a result they just get worse. While the rich get richer, the poor get poorer, and every negative cycle repeats itself. America needs to stop "believing" and actually begin to grow up!

Rather than insist that "the rich" (whatever your definition of that is) lower their standards, why not demand that "the poor" elevate their own personal status? there are reasons why people become wealthy and why some don't. And for all of America's flaws, ANYONE can become comfortable or wealthy or at least have the opportunity if they are willing to work for it. If they aren't, they can become Bernie supporters and follow that millionaire into despair.
@lellyparker
@lellyparker 4 жыл бұрын
@@stevedrums1675 *"ANYONE can become comfortable or wealthy or at least have the opportunity if they are willing to work for it"* - That is simply false. The rich have all the power. They keep wages low as they can. They keep house prices and rents as high as they can. The very rich do NOT make their money through hard work they INHERIT it. They get it for doing nothing but be lucky enough to be born into the right family. They keep their money by exploiting the less able. The very educated usually have wealthy parents backing their education. It is not equally possible for a rich person to be educated as a poor person. The ONLY reason poor people have chances at good education at all is because of social welfare programs. Yes anyone CAN become wealthy in exactly the same way that anyone CAN win the lottery. But most don't. In fact almost all don't.

I had a horrible experience with David Crosby at Steven Still’s house in 1968 right after thy gave a concert at the Greek theatre. I’ve never forgotten the incident. I was sitting on the floor with some friends, leaning against the wall, when suddenly Crosby appeared right in front of me, arms folded truculently, his shoes right against my legs, glaring down at me. I had never met him and had no idea what motivated his obviously aggressive and completely out of the blue behavior. I didn’t want to get in a fist fight with Crosby, even if he was being a complete asshole. I was a guest. So I just looked down at the floor until he finally walked away. But I’ve always wondered why he did that and why he picked me. As I said, I had never had the slightest contact with Crosby until that moment.

Brilliant words of advice from Mr Crosby about heroin - or any drug for that matter...and I speak of that which I know. For anyone with even a moderate amount of curiosity where this sort of thing is concerned, it will become a consideration at some point. If you try Heroin, and you like it, you're fucked. It may not be tomorrow, it might not be within weeks or months...flirtation may last a year...but it will get you; next thing you know, you've experienced ten years of suffering and loss. If you're lucky. Heed the words of the Croz.

But as fantastic as these people are- they are still rooted in reality. I am still a hippie-dippy southern child with a self-reliance policy. I understand Mr. Crosby's ideals and so many others'. But we are very strong as a Nation. If ONLY we could STOP believing our own bullshit and work as ONE! My father voted for Nixon but believes in ALL of us. My mother is middle of the road. It was the easiest thing to quit, by the end of 6 months I fucking hated it and just stopped. In 99 I did it again for about a month and hated it again, so stopped. In 2014 I had a chance to do it one more time, stayed up all night and 24 hours later, hated it, hated me for doing it, but cigarettes got me bad. I both love them and hate them but I still enjoy them, so fuck it we all gotta go sometime, but for me it won't be from an OD, It'll actually be all the shit I eat, because, oh yeah, I love food and my doctor is telling me I'm clogging all my shit up. Success for me as a musician would be for a guy like David Crosby to hear one of my songs and tell me he liked it. Even if only through the magic of the Internet...

I did speed/crank and coke once each and never had any idea or intention to do it again. I guess I had to prove to myself that I could do it or I was just stupid enough to give in to peer pressure. But, I'm also not crazy about alcohol, but I do like pot, or I used to like the old pot I got as a kid in the 70's and 80's, but today's pot doesn't do much for me. Not I recommend anyone try anything. I also have a big problem with caffeine too. It makes me feel weird and uncomfortable. So, maybe I am lucky my body just naturally doesn't love these things. Maybe I could get addicted to them, but why would I want that grief. I am mostly addicted to food ... and that is the worst. Think of it this way, if you don't like it enough to get addicted to it ... then why try it at all, and if you do, you would want to go back in time and not do it so you can avoid addiction - so it is a lose-lose proposition. DC makes sense, there is really no point in doing it. Today there is plenty known about the bad sides of these drugs.

Thanks for surviving, many good folk's didn't! I won't thank you for your service because you didn't have a choice, it was like paid forced labour without danger pay, except for getting Metals for a job well done. So glad you made it! ✌💞🌹🎶♾

@Khaver 25 Don't you mean "won't go"? Not "want go"? Some folk's back then, went when they got called up by the draft in 1968, because people back then they were shamed by their folk's and the entire community if they ran away when the got the draft notice. While others feared the Government and the consequences of being a Draft Dodger! I've known both, the Vietnam Vet's and Draft Dodgers who ended up hiding out in Canada. All good folk's. I feel for my Veteran friends because surviving that senseless War was enough, for them to then come home to be Publicly Shamed by the Hippies was the biggest crime of that entire War. Shame on the people who are still Shaming those or any Vet's. I guess all that tripping made you LOSE you Humanity for your fellow Man and Woman. It must be so nice to sit on your High Horse of Righteous Indignation, when someone else did the work, that was demanded of them and they've paid the price some with their lives while others with their sanity and their pride. Please show some empathy and compassion for those who didn't run away from your Government's demands. Just because you did Go when your country called, doesn't make it right! Especially now when you RUB in the fact that they went and did their duty because they didn't see it as a CHOICE , NO way out but to go. While you Ran away, and "Tuned in Turned On and Dropped Out", when you were asked to serve your country. I ask you this, When the WAR, that is looming, is on your Doorstep, where will you be? Running Away Again and depending the Military Men and Women who you turned your back on, still chanting "Hell No we Won't Go"! Where will you be then my friend? Running Away Again? Or will you Stand and Deliver and be counted in this time?

WOW! Am so surprised... PLEASANTLY too... really enjoyed that...saw David Crosby when The Byrds paid a controversial visit to Cape Town in 1968/69 - Alhambra Theatre - Apartheid Nationalist nazis were in full force - no playing to mixed audiences - strictly VERBOTEN - "Jawohl Meinen Herr Vorster!" The supporting acts were the Staccatos (SA pop band) & an obscure British female whose white dress & white skin made her standing target for rude audience members - also her singing was not good at all - sadly she was laughed at & booed off the stage as the crowd had come for the Byrds mostly... Curtains stayed closed for a good number of minutes whilst strobe lights were flashing & The Byrds were playing Mr Spaceman I think - then after a good while curtains opened to the BACKS OF THE GROUP EXCEPT FOR DAVID CROSBY - who faced us side-on... then he addressed the audience stating all the following numbers are dedicated to OTIS REDDING adding cheekily - " ... but you lot wldn't know who that was anyway..." was his closing comment... Pandamonium broke loose..."Yanks - Go home..." was shouted with constant barrage of noise... They played for another 10/15 minutes then said were cancelling show due to laryngitis probs - that we audience members can get refunded if we wanted to... Hang I just admired them SO much...were my absolute heroes - wgen CSN&Y came about ... were my favourite group... Thank you Mr Crosby from a huge fan - 60's/70's were the best times music-wise not so much politicians...
