Mr. Crosby had been clean for many years when this song was recorded… being a fellow sober person, I interpret this song to mean that one addict can help another addict by just reaching out a hand and pulling them out of the water, so to speak. Those who understand will understand. Beautiful song, beautiful message.

I don't know how to explain, but it took me months of going back to the song to gradually realize what was going on with this song. He was speaking directly to what is going on. This song is the anthem of what it means to be sentient and have aspirations. It's like Rush's Garden song, except it's not so sophisticated and it goes directly to the need. Rush's song is more philosophical and honestly misses the urgency. David Crosby is literally communicating his song in the hope it will do just as it is about-- that someone will get the message and realize what it means to have the power to reach into another person's life.

David gave a quick (given a brief moment) description of the meaning of this song, and I think there's even more to it, and that is that each person, in our own way, has a responsibility to our fellow human beings to be a help, and to do things that will help make others better, or better off as humans, because each of us needs that same kind of help from others. One must humble oneself to acknowledge this responsibility, and then act upon it.

I just heard this song for the first time Tuesday on SXM deep tracks during a 1000 mile road trip. My god, how had I not heard this before? And why is this a deep track? Thanks Earle Baily!

…. And should be noted that James Raymond on keyboards is David Crosby’s son. The backstory to that is amazing and well worth a google.
