"If you let your students go away thinking that is the ONLY accent, then you've done them a disservice." This is sooooo true!!!! When I first moved back to Hong Kong from Canada when I was 5, I was, at one point, being corrected by a teacher of mine at the kindergarten (God forbidden!) that /təˈmeɪ.t̬oʊ/ is WRONG for the red juicy fruit that we put in salads, and that the CORRECT way to pronounce it is /təˈmɑː.təʊ/. I was sooo angry back then, but I was only 5, so I don't know how to fight back, it was so sad that kids in HK grew up with such an education system where children are set to a fixed way of doing things, and their world is only black-or-white, right-or-wrong...

I think that teacher can learn a lot of knowledge about languages from the Internet. Because learning languages well, you have to listen, read, and write more. We can learn languages from looking the videos, talking to foreigners, and showing opinions by yourself. So you can learn many languages by so many ways.

I think teachers in nowadays should more time to search on the Internet. They have to keep on the pace of the English languages changing . So that they can keep on the pace what teenagers think. There isn’t always only American English in the world now. Such as, there are also Indian English…… and more and more. Keeping on pace of global English is an important thing.

And if you complain, you get fired . Teachers have such a low pay, they have to teach 50+ hours a week to cover their bills, and this doesn't include other responsibilities, like writing reports and prep. And you want teachers to work even more? No thank you

In Taiwan, some of the English teachers face the problem of teaching students who don't like English. Some students do not spend time on learning English and being lazy to study English because they don't put emphasis on it. They even find that they somehow don't need English in their careers. However, teachers still have to put efforts into teaching them whether they really want to learn well or not.
@davidsonfoffah51742 жыл бұрын
Well, I have something very similar as this in Nigeria (West Africa) especially; the cultures and traditions so ignorantly fight the use of English in homes and among certain conservative families. So then yet, the country cannot do without English. They use it for everything and, in everything. Right from transaction of money, exchange of goods and properties, learning institutions to all works of life. So seriously, to these conservative sects, life becomes a trap in the hole, since they really can't do without English anyway. Just as the professor says: ' English has become the language of science and of the whole world '. We all live in a global village now.

I'd like to know how non native speakers deal with jargons, phasal verbs, slangs and business lingo, if all of these things are made of words that doesn't mean individually what it means together, they can't understand by the context because theses stuffs are out of the context. How to solve the issue?

I think if a person speak one main English accent is enough, but he/she could learn more English accents that the person would probably know what others are talking about. For me, I'm a ESL person that I learned the American English accent, but I gradually learned more accents to know what others are talking about.

STID:10316004 If I were a English teacher, we should teach all varieties of English. We should go outside to talk with other foreigner. In order to improve our ability, we should attain to global meeting to listen professor talking about. We learn the correct pronunciation form other people and improve ourselves wrong use. The important is communicate with foreigner, we begin to start examinate our English and listen more a varieties of teaching and absorb to knowledge.

well intentioned, but there is a lot of nonsense here. The grammar of English is relatively stable and so it the vocabulary. Tiny changes in the language are insignificant to all but the most advanced learners. The biggest problem facing language teachers is that students are not immersed in the language and so it will be acquired at a glacial pace if at all. Playing students Ghanian English or Indian English not be useful unless they are advanced learners of English.
@davidsonfoffah51742 жыл бұрын
In my general overview of it all, English language though, has spread with lots of adoptions and adaptations, but one thing is very clear, that the language still belongs to a the English. Take for example the American English. Yes, it has taken about 500 hundred years to adopt ant to build it as Am English. It still has its origin from the Brit English. So in all, every other country might have owned one form of English or the other, it's just a 'tiny torch', of changes here and there. Alot of rules are still stable and, there remains one original English; and that is, the Brit English .

STID:10216020 In my opinion, if most people can understand meanings from learner's speak, it's not necessary that teacher correct students' pronunciation. We should respect other people. And I think that teacher should improve themselves or increase new knowledge to teach students because noways language change so fast.
@davidsonfoffah51742 жыл бұрын
To some extent though, yes, but the contrasting phenomenon there is that, whether English English, American English, Asian English, Middle East English or African English, the bottom line is, there is the Rules of Grammar, that binds it all together, guides and guards all Englishes, in line with which all adopted and none adopted Englishes most obey; such as, structures and construction etc. This is so important so that the language is not destroyed or mangled.
@asgharraza65343 жыл бұрын
English language is stretching instead of changing or spreading so i am conscious about its originality . Englishmen should feel their responsibility to present a standard language channel and some other authentic media resources for the whole world.I am a Pakistani but it is worst thing for me to bear a mixture of english on the name of english though my own English is poor but I want to seek original English.

I think people in general want to speak a language other than English,thus the different varieties of standard English. I think speaking French is a better decision.
Learn and teach the correct way first, then allow for modern adaptations once it's mastered. It remains that British RP is the superior and most understandable accent. This man is very smart, but he strikes me as someone who wants to remain relevant by embracing modern language. English language has peaked. Where we go from here is gobbledegook. The fast changes that occur on the internet are a result of laziness and ignorance. I'm not sure we should encourage it.
