I once did a statistical analysis for season 1; Agent Mulder has a 33% chance of losing his handgun, is shot at in 2 of 13 or cases, and is rescued by Scully more often than he rescues others. And if he says "Don't worry, I'll protect you," you're screwed.

Mulder is sharp as a tack, a wicked IQ with an agent's instincts that borders on the miraculous. He WAS the FBI's golden boy at one time - but here's the thing; Mulder is EXTREMELY good at what he does. It's just that what he does is weird. He's made weird choices with his life. What he investigates cannot be catalogued, characterised or easily referenced. He's still a brilliant agent.

I recall the introduction of the Mulder character, he was portrayed as a super smart profiler....and then the writers kinda forgot about all that.... that was a shame.
@cryptusmaximus86997 жыл бұрын
It's about context. Mulder and Scully have always been insanely smart and talented. It's just that they're always dealing with matters way out of the FBI's league, and that makes them look a bit more ineffective than they normally would.
@TheGuindo7 жыл бұрын
It comes up again a few times when he does up profiles for cases. Generally, when people reference his skills as a profiler, they do it with a sense of disappointment. Like, "You had such a promising career ahead of you, I can't believe you squandered it on flying saucers and ghosts."
@dangeradams582405 жыл бұрын
they didn't forget about it. mulder was right about everything as a result, in part, of his awesome profiler skills. they just didn't beat us over the head with it to keep reminding us. "mulder, how did you know he did it?" "my profiling days are far from behind me, scully." believing in your audience's intelligence makes for better tv. although i'll grant you that Darin Morgan forgot any intelligence that mulder ever had in any episode ever.

I once read an interview where Chris Carter (X Files's creator) recalled when he cast Duchovny as Mulder. He said that when Duchovny first auditioned he spoke the lines much slower than Carter wanted. He told Duchovny that his look and manner were great but he had to speed up the delivery because he wanted the character to seem intelligent and smart. Duchovny was puzzled - saying he wanted all audience members to understand what was being said, even if it was technical or scientific. However, Carter insisted (and Duchovny was a complete unknown looking for an acting job) so he agreed, read the lines faster and was cast. Carter then said that, to his eternal shame, he made a judgement call about Duchovny based on this encounter - namely that the other was not all that bright. He later discovered that Duchovny was probably the most intelligent and well-read man he'd ever met. He said this experience has taught him to NEVER make snap judgements about people - always get to know them first.

I recall the official X-files club magazine had an anonymous interview with a real FBI agent and asked him for an honest assessment of the show's realism. He was interesting to say the least. Several of my favorites: There's no real need to assign the X-files to the Bureau. He said he wouldn't be surprised a bit if in real life, they worked for the Border Patrol or Homeland Security A real Agent Mulder would have been fired long before the first season even ended! The Bureau doesn't like it when you have a habit of ditching your partner and losing your gun And my all time favorite: The X-files would never be put in the basement of the Hoover Building. No director there is that hateful/cruel! On a more serious note, he said in real life, there would be multiple people in the X-Files, not just two. Mulder and Scully would likely be assigned to a field office on the east coast while Doggett and Reyes would cover the west coast.

He takes me on the FOX studios lot and we go into this huge warehouse with fake offices and cubicles. I think Mulder is a great FBI agent. He's good at his work, and of course he solves every case. The problem with him is that he uses his ability of investigation in a "wrong way", like a lot of collegues or bosses would say. The thing is not to solve or not a case, but when you make Scully see or even believe just a bit that what you are investigating is the truth, is what matter most. @zeekaywalker92322 жыл бұрын
3:32 clearly not an x file fan. Tooms had been convicted and released from prison and took part in two episodes. Beside Mulder having to testify various times in court, like in the case where hostage got shot and Mulder felt guilty about it since he had clear sight on the target but didn't wanted to risk shooting the victim and when it seemed that the guy did return and investigated again for example.
@RestuSandikaKamaruddin4 жыл бұрын
I don't think it works that way. Yes Mulder is an FBI agent but he's a profiler first & foremost: he's qualified based on how many criminals/suspects who he's able to profile accurately, not based on how many X Files cases are solved. X Files are basically just a pile of cases, just the same as any case that is submitted to the FBI, only the nature of the case is unexplainable. Moreover, if Mulder's success were based on the number of X Files cases that are able to be solved, then that would make Scully an incapable agent as well because X Files aren't single agent cases; they are both agents' cases. And Scully's original job was meant to be providing an analytical perspective to somehow justify that what would've looked like an X Files case were just cases with extremely rare explanations, therefore debunking the left-field/paranormal approach/perspective that Mulder has on them. So if X Files cases' status are opened/unsolved, that don't mean they fail; it just has no explainable way to really solve the case. It doesn't have anything to do with their credibility as FBI agents.

I thought both Mulder's and Scully's acting, along with many of the other main characters, was superb. Having been fascinated by the UFO enigma for three decades before the X-Files aired, this show resonated with me. Am currently reading an old 1960 book by Major Donald E. Keyhoe "Flying Saucers, Top Secret", who devoted much of his life, like agent Mulder, to uncovering the US government's real knowledge of the UFO phenomena. If Keyhoe were alive today he would be very pleased by the disclosure that the government indeed had a UFO working group, AATIP, directed by Lue Elizondo. And, he would have been more gratified by the release of official government videos of encounters with UFO's by US Navy pilots.

Actually, it's true, he rarely arrests anyone. Sometimes he does but he either kilsl them/it or it/they get away. Not Mulders fault though.
