My father Roy Baird was the executive producer on this film and I spent a week in Spain when it was being filmed at the castle sequences.So many fond memories But this piece of music is frankly the work of a genius and is incredibly underatted. Probably the best Rock and Roll film ever made! They should re release Stardust in the cinema today there is a whole new interest in this period and it stands the test of time.

I saw the film in the early 80s at a Los Angeles revival house. It had limited release in 1974 and is sadly underrated. My gut tells me some producers at Lorimar saw Larry Hagman and said "that's JR Ewing."

This was inspired by there French composer Charles Gounod's (Date of death: 18 October 1893 Date of birth: 17 June 1818) 'Sanctus' from his 'St Cecilia Mass'. Both versions are utterly sublime. I just wish I could listen to the Essex version he sang in the film in full, without the cuts to the production crew in the gallery directing the cameras (in the film). Dave Edmunds version is wonderful too. This is one of the pieces of music I'd like played at my funeral, which, I doubt anyone would attend, but at any rate, I shall know it will be played...and that will put a rare sliver of a smile on my face...

The producer of Stardust, David Putnam, asked me, as the music producer for the film, to record my vocal of De Sancta in case David Essex wasn't able to handle it. David did handle it, but, for some reason beyond my control, my version made it to the soundtrack album, much to the annoyance of David. So it's David Essex singing in the movie, and me singing on the album

I think both versions sound great! Your's (from the album) and David's (from the film). Both versions have one thing in common! They capture the heart, soul, and essence that Jim Maclaine has put into this opera! The deification and glory of women. Long Live Jim Maclaine!

Much better than the David Essex version IMO. A fantastic album though and brings back great memories of 1974 when I was 12 !!

I've been listening to this lately...I love Gounod's Sanctus...and this is just sublime...it also reminds me of my Late Mother, as the whole song is a tribute to Motherhood...I just wish Amazon Prime Music would have a full HD album of the entire soundtrack to listen to - especially this track.

I don't care who sang it (although i'm sure it was David) it is an incredible piece of music and very moving when watching the film, always makes me come out in goose bumps lol brilliant to hear it again, thanks for posting
@TheMasterNo63 жыл бұрын
Dave Edmunds sang it for the soundtrack album. David Essex sang it in the film.

If there was a reprint made of the album, it would have been corrected to replace my version, with David's version, as he quite rightly demanded. I hope this clears up the mystery

@@alangreenley3257 I really enjoyed the challenge of taking this on. I had no idea I could sing like that. The multi-track orchestra tape I was given had a professional opera singer doing the vocal (which no one has ever heard). I got the phrasing and timing down from him. The movie is going to be re-released on DVD soon.

I've just found the religious music this based on while researching music to put together an 'old style ' Mass. I agree it is not David Essex singing. He never had the top range, but I'll check on the L.P to see if there's a credit. Thanks for posting this.

I wanted to write an opera, something dedicated to my Mother...but the media have got hold of it and turned it into a bloody electronic nightmare, they can only push you so far...When all this is over, we'll just dissapear right, go away...and live like kings, the dialogue which ushered in McLaine's decadent period, something both Presley and Lennon were to do in real life just a year or so later

The Essex version from the film is awesome and better than this one, by far. This is a good version but lacks the intensity of the film version.Why was the Essex version never released? That is a great loss to everyone, especially future generations.
