fight club is the most fincher movie he has eveer made not this imo. i honestly long for the day he returns to shooting with film cameras, the grittiness fits his style sooo well, its like a nostalgic murky cologne

Valid! I think he won’t return to film cameras (unless he’s beginning to make some of his last films and wants to for fun) just because of how digital allows him to get all those takes relatively inexpensively. But there definitely is a visual and thus emotional difference between his film and digital stuff, and I’d like to see him go back to shooting film at least once.

I'm a hyper Fincher fanboy and even i can say this is one of his weakest works, but i admire the sprinkles of meta, self-insert elements that reflect him as a creator. I love to compare this movie with The Irishman, because both films seem like the "ultimate film" of each directors - combining all their tropes into one basket, either for self-critique, satire or indulgence.

Enjoyed the review. I think Fincher (and the character) goes to great degrees to disguise humanity, because humanity is not conducive to his profession as a hitman. It's always there, leaking out through his little mistakes, seconds of doubt through monologue, and even the mantra itself serves to not mirror the characters psychopathy, but instead serves to ensure the character stays on track in being a psychopath, because he's rationalised that's his key to survival. Because of the great lengths the whole movie goes to to suppress the key theme of humanity, for me I feel like it amplifies it as a theme, which brings floods emotion back into the movie, in a meta sense. The additional Fincher specific meta I think is him poking fun at the perfection of movie making and the expectations held against him in his craft. He's saying; hey, I know I'm a great (sometimes pretentious) movie maker who is successful from representing horrific themes, but I make mistakes, and when I'm done, I'm a human too.

I never thought about as in-depth as you just did, but I agree with everything, and it makes sense given how his reputation as a filmmaker is being a perfectionist, which is a lot of pressure. And thanks!

I like you insight into the film as I have been a fan of his from a young age as he was just starting to do films. Although even for diehard Fincher fans i think this is tough one to sit through as I expected so much more being that this film was planned when he was in his prime after films like Seven, The Game, Fight Club, and Panic Room. Being that this film was in mind for over 20 years with Brad Pitt originally for the part it could of joined the list of his all time great films. Instead you get Zodiac slow in pace as if the film purposely shot itself with a tranquilizer dart as the viewer waits till it wears off but it never does.

Great review! Very balanced and maybe a little generous because I felt the film totally lacked anything that engaged me - slick car commercials can be more engaging. And apparently the budget was 175 million USD according to what I read!?

Thank you so much! I laughed out loud at the slick car commercials comment. Story wise, I wasn’t really invested, but something about the cinematography put me in a trance that made it easier to get through. I wonder if 175 million is the highest budget Fincher has ever worked with-if so, I’d like to see what he does with that type of budget again with more of a “classic” Fincher narrative.

It's actually even more impressive that Fincher could make a fantastic movie while stripping it of the most important pieces that make a movie relatable for the audience. If you think about it, he made the exact opposite of what a movie stands for in general

I really enjoyed this movie, people dont realize the skill thats involved to make a movie, underappreciate it, this genre and what he was trying to do is hard and he did his best job and it was awesome 8/10... but yeah everything you said I completely agree with you, I feel like he did this for art, to show that if a person like this existed, this is how his conscious actually be, its funny when he was getting beaten the shit out of by the puerto rican, i was like rooting for him

Good review. This is a gorgeous looking production, but its lack of emotion/feeling/humanity results in a ‘meh’ from me which is disappointing. It feels like a movie made on the cheap which I’m sure it was not based on the locations alone. Fincher is someone we cinephiles are counting on as we emerge from the woke content winter we’ve been in, and I hope he returns to form (Gone Girl, Dragon Tattoo, etc). Subbed.

A teenager making movie stuff🤔 hmmm. Honestly their was a lot of product placement in The Killer. The repeat of the inner line is a lil overused. But it is a MF role so it is ok but this could have been better. Ngl I was expecting him to kill the gf and brother the whole time. But yeah 7/10 for sure
