Mr. Reality, David Foster's conclusion at the end seems misplaced to me. While one can defeat an enemy where they are not, one does need step on to the battle field every so often. Entertainment only survives be the patrons it brings in and so by providing a product that people prefer you can drain the money away just as effectively as you drain the blood from an opponent with a good thrust of the sword. Thank you for your efforts as always.

I don't think he was saying one shouldn't step on the field, he was observing that in providing an alternative, one either appeals to an audience that doesn't need it, or ends up creating another version of the thing they sought to replace. Massive production and marketing budgets influence and perhaps create these scenarios. But it may also be that our preferences are by nature faulty, and easily manipulated.

Have you read Infinite Jest? If not, you might want to give it a shot. It will provide much more context for this 2 minute piece about “The Entertainment” - the paradox he describes is completely accurate in my opinion.
