David Fray - Schubert: Moments Musicaux, Impromptus
Album available on: bit.ly/DavidFraySchubert
/ davidfray.officiel
David Fray has declared his particular affinity with Austro-German music, and after two CDs featuring Bach (and a DVD featuring him in Bach concertos) he now turns to the early Romantic era and Schubert, with a programme of the six Moments musicaux D780, the four Impromptus D899 and the Allegretto in C minor D915, recorded in Berlin.
His approach to the music is typically questioning and illuminating. At the piano, he told the French magazine Pianiste, I try to make music like a conductor, not just as a pianist. I approach the score as if it is a reduction of a symphonic work. The piano constitutes a way of getting nearer the heart of the music. How do you balance the voices? How do you find a progression in a movement? How do you put the polyphony in place? Its much more interesting to study Bachs approach to the orchestra in the Magnificat or the Christmas Oratorio than to read books on how to play Bach on the piano. Each time I approach a new score, I ask myself how the composer would have written it if he hadnt decided on the piano. Take Schuberts first impromptu, for instance: it starts like a reduction of an orchestral score: a tutti chord and then the melody is presented on its own, as if on a flute. Then the winds take up the theme before the strings make their entry. Most of the work comprises three or four independent lines which sing together a cello ostinato, counterpoint harmony in the violas, say, and the winds above it.

Through his interpretation of the music he is playing, and by listening I get quite "another listening ear". Although I was given Bach and other composers with a (musical) spoon from I was a baby, I now (60) have another opinion about Bach, Chopin and Schubert because of him.

I love how he describes "coincidence" in Schubert's music as opposed to the inevitability of every note in Beethoven's, and those feelings of doubt and aloneness that come with the absence of God, God as Bach knew him.

When Europeans stopped believing in God, they stopped producing great art. All of the greatest European composers, Vivaldi, Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, Schubert, Handel, Haydn, Verdi, etc., believed in God; not one of them was an atheist. Now that Europeans have, thanks to Charles Darwin and his followers, adopted atheism, they have lost their reason to live for the future, to hope for the future, to reproduce for the future. Atheism is a doctrine (it is too shallow to be a substitute religion) of meaninglessness, hopelessness, and, ultimately, of despair. No wonder Europeans seem to have given up on themselves, and seem willing to surrender their great civilization to the forces of Islam, which evil as it is, still believes in something rather than in nothing. For, in the final analysis, nothing is, ultimately, all that atheism has to offer, a spiritual nothingness whose finality is death.

I was going to reply to all the points raised, then I realised they are so ridiculous I would be wasting my energy. As an atheist my life is absolutely full of meaning and hope, and the only despair I have is for those who hand over their thinking capacity to organised religion and who become slaves to others' doctrines. Europe is a creative hotbed that buzzes with innovation, and I am hugely proud to be a European and an atheist.
