In this comprehensive biography of the pre-presidential Obama, Garrow, who won the Pulitzer for Bearing the Cross, his life of Martin Luther King, looks in detail at each stage of Obama’s personal and political development. Drawing on more than a thousand interviews, Garrow, professor of law and history and Distinguished Faculty Scholar at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, vividly evokes his subject’s early years in Hawaii and Indonesia, follows his academic progress from primary school through law school, and charts his political education as a community organizer and state senator. Garrow profiles the people who influenced Obama and shows how Obama used these influences. Epic in scale, this profound portrait of a leader takes Obama’s story up to the moment he decides to run for president.

What a tragedy that such a talented individual was such a disappointing, status quo president.

The lip smacking is SO distracting. If one is going to speak in public, one MUST rrealize how detrimental that habit is to some of the audience's ability to focus on what the speaker is saying. Sorry.

Garrow spends all his time doing research and writing and he's not a great speaker as a result.

Interesting interview! Awesome book! As a Trump supported who just finished the book, I wish my fellow Conservatives would withhold comments on material they have not read.

@@sawyerramos3113 Obama was a brilliant, self-made guy who was raised by his grandparents in Hawaii. By his mid-20s, he realized it was his destiny to become U.S. president.

@@studlyload I don't think you can extrapolate that he's a racist just because he displays an overfamiliarity (if it's even that, I think calling someone by their first name is pretty normal and insisting that you shouldn't because someone's in a position of authority is servile) with someone he wrote a 1,000 page biography about lol
