David Gilmour plugs his soul into his amp . The way he holds a note and plays with emotion is mesmerising . One epic concert was on a massive floating stage in Venice 1989 . You should check out their early stuff like "Echoes" live at Pompei from 1972 . No audience just them and the crew in the Roman amphitheater .

The genius of the guitar solo is NOT only in its technicality (which is stunning).. but it COMPLETELY replaces the vocals/lyrics in order to communicate the struggle in this "comfortably numb" state ..that solo contains screams of help and despair with some moments of hope... Back in 1994 I lived in Earls Court. The arena where The Floyd played was just at the top of my street. I got tickets to go and see Pink Floyd on four of their fifteen nights. I know it's almost thirty years ago but those shows were the best that I've ever seen and guys I've seen some fantastic gigs. At that time The Division Bell tour utilised the biggest light show and the biggest sound system hitherto assembled for a live gig. The Comfortably Numb video really brought back some great memories. More Floyd please guys, maybe Wish You Here or Run Like Hell.

I was there. I had a girl who had recently met in Florida come over to visit me anxious for some extra entertainment. Can you imagine how more keen she became when I told her I had an extra almost front-row ticket to see Floyd only a couple of days later? I think she came at least 3 times before, during and after, and that was just the day of the concert. We were extremly spoiled for great concerts back then. I rarely had to wait more than a few weeks and travel more than 6 miles to see any band that was anything, including some American ones. Just a few short stops on the underground and a few back again. Living in London back in the day was progressive and other rock music heaven. Americans on the other hand often have to drive for miles, and this is to just get in and out of the car park. My American cousins had to often board flights, and book hotels, just to see a band of their choice.

Saw them at Wembley Stadium, London in 1988 and, although they were small dots at the other end of the stadium, the sound system they'd fitted around the inside of the whole stadium was incredible. Before the concert started, they tested it with sounds of things like huge flights of heavy-engined planes, which was impressive. But not as impressive as when they played this as the final song...then came back on to do two more songs as an encore. There's a comment below from Shaun Byrne about 'Echoes live at Pompeii' which I have to agree is a special performance, very intimate and a musical masterpiece.

Great comment Tony, so pleased you mention the quad sound, as Floyd spared no expense to ensure the sound and light show was unforgettable (Britannia Row). Kinda there with the facts Daniel. They did have extremely distracting & blinding light shows to begin with, because they were rather shy & reserved, but they were still seen. The lights were just a distraction so the band weren't the main focus. And they were the 1st band to play in an ancient ruins Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii, in almost 2000 years. And they basically played it to the ghosts of Pompeii, empty of any human audience.

The whole Pulse concert is thrilling to watch and to listen to. I suggest checking out 'Sorrow' from Pulse next. I'm not sure it's the greatest Floyd song, I'm not even sure it's the greatest on The Wall album. Then again, it's hard to say which song is their greatest, as they wrote so many masterpieces. For other great performances I highly recommend Echoes, either the Pompeii one, or the one they did in Gdansk in Poland in 2008, this was the last ever performance of it before their keyboard player, Richard Wright, passed away. David Gilmour has said he will never play this song again since. What I love most about David Gilmour is how appropriate his guitar is to the music. He practically never imposes his musicianship on a song. It's always feels to me to be gently fitting. Comfortably Numb is the most I can remember him just playing the hell out of a song. And god bless him for it. Pulse was phenomenal. But, Delicate Sound of Thunder from around 1988 is my favorite live concert by Pink Floyd. It is hands down my favorite version of Wish You Were Here. First rule: Never take your eyes off the performance. Pink Floyd is the Greatest Live performing band in recorded music history. Their concerts are not just a musical experience, it's a visual one. Pink Floyd doesn't want you focusing on them, they want you to focus on the experience, on the music. They want the event to be a visceral one for each and every fan there. They're lights are highly synchronized with the music to magnify and amplify the emotion in the music. You really need to react to Sorrow and Keep Talking. You should also check out the 2016 David Gilmour Live in Pompeii performances He's 70 and still shredding.

You're partly right about Floyd. Sorry to disagree with you. But I have to say the following very confidently. What Rammstein performs on stage is nothing but superior to any life band, this since nearly 3 decades. I (58 years old) love both bands very much, but I give Rammstein the leadership and Floyd the second, that way ahead of any other band that was and is on this planet.

David Gilmour has been interviewed regarding The Pulse show and he said that the show is not about the music. If you want to listen to the music you could just listen to the CD. The show is all about the experience and the light show. And they are right. Back then in 1994 I couldn't afford a card for their show but I had the opportunity to watch and record the show when it was aired via "Premiere" in Germany (now called "Sky"). Every time I see that concert, I am fully exhausted afterwards only by listening and viewing it on the tv.

To me, this particular concert, and especially this particular track was the defining performance, the absolute zenith of all Pink Floyd's many years of pure artistry, it all came together and culminated in this monumental moment. Stunning... totally amazing !

This is the best guitar solo live ever from the most unreal concert in history. David Gilmore have different tone, he don't need lyrics when he play. Pink Floyd sent more people to the space from NASA.

as i was one of those who suggested this, thank you so much for doing it. they say that they first performed 'behind' the light show, because they were really shy and didn't enjoy being in the spotlight. this show was so good because they gave the technician unlimited funds to do what he wanted. the most popular track performed at Pompeii is Echoes. David Gilmour says that it's his favourite PF song. mine too, although i prefer the version he performed at Gdansk, in Poland, in 2006. you should really check out the Pompeii version, though. very good use of new sound techniques

Amazing reaction guys! You should watch David Gilmour’s Live at Pompeii. It was the first time the amphitheatre had an audience there since the time of the gladiators. As you mentioned, Pink Floyd were there and performed but for filming purposes but then Gilmour put a show on for his fans. Just amazing 👍. I’ve been lucky to watch Gilmour Live a few times now and it’s so good.

Your reaction was brilliant watching you both enjoy it so much. This is the best guitar solo of all time for me. Gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. Every single song they play in the Pulse concert is epic - PF playing at their peak. Try Sorrow, Keep Talking and High Hopes (or indeed anything) from Pulse and you won’t be disappointed

This was recorded at one of the series of concerts in 1994 at Earls Court in London. It was the fourth and final time I saw them and it was wonderful night. I haven't been to a gig or festival since (and I've been to a few!) that even come close to the perfection of that night.
