Gower really was a sublime batsman. There really has never been anyone with such grace and elegance. Yet the first shot of this clip epitomises his enigmatic persona. Such a loose waft and to chase it one handed was so remiss. As Ray Illingworth says, he could easily have caught up with that stray ball and got a nick. But all in all, my favourite ever batsman. I still watch all these old clips today and it resonates massively with me. His sublime hundred (converted to double hundred) on the Saturday od the '85 Ashes test at Edgbaston was the stuff of dreams.
