Love went a-riding (Mary E Coleridge) 1914
by Frank Bridge (1879-1941)
Love went a-riding over the earth,
On Pegasus he rode.
The flowers before him sprang to birth,
And the frozen rivers flowed.
Then all the youths and the maidens cried,
" Stay here with us, King of Kings ! "
But Love said, " No ! for the horse I ride,
For the horse I ride has wings."
David Johnston studied with the celebrated Bach singer Eric Greene and later with the equally celebrated tenor Alexander Young.
In the early 70's he quickly established himself as one of the most distinguished tenors of his generation and was much in demand in the UK and abroad, especially for his interpretation of the Evangelist in Bach's St Matthew Passion. Perhaps better known as a concert and oratorio singer, he still had considerable success on stage, notably for his work with Kent Opera where he sang to great acclaim the role of Florestan in Beethoven's Fidelio.
His made several studio recordings including recital discs of music by Benjamin Briiten, Roger Quilter, Frank Bridge and Ivor Gurney.
He was much sought after as a teacher and held positions as professor of singing at the Royal College of Music and later (I think) at the Royal Manchester College of Music.
