The Layoff is a lineup killler. It gives WC teams a major advantage. The 3 best teams in baseball can't hit fastballs in the playoffs all of the sudden. What a joke.

The 5 day layoff is ridiculous. If not a disadvantage, for sure is not an advantage for top 2 seed teams. Either have top 2 seeds have home field adv in game 2 to 5 or make it best of 7 series or have 3 day off max.

I have to believe if you asked the teams managers before this playoff season began if either of the 1 or 2 seeds would have preferred be swapped with a 3-6 seed - they would have said no.

This was a good piece and great points by both David and Rob. David's comparison between his Yankee vs Seattle series and the Braves vs Phillies series is spot on. The Phillies do not fear any of the Braves pitchers, and with the Braves' offense deciding to stay on break, this team is in real trouble. Since the creation of the Wild Card Series, I've said that this would happen. These guys play basically for 6 months, 3 on and 1 off, constantly and then all of a sudden you're told to take 6-7 days off. We all know it's about the network money but something needs to be done. This will be the second year in a row where the top teams get rolled out in the division round. I know and understand all the discussion and argument from both sides but that doesn't change my opinion. Go back to the system of having the three division winners and the next best team. Four teams in each league is enough. Baseball's a long enough season as it is, it doesn't need to go from mid February until the beginning of November.

Man... I felt as if I was crazy because it seemed like I was the only one that was speaking out against this format for the very reasons you're speaking on. I guess I just hadn't found the right corner of the internet. Lol. A lot of people want to think it's about giving lesser teams a chance when it is, actually, all about that network moolah. Many of these people are so caught up in the "Cinderella" story that they can't see this is all manufactured and they honestly think some teams would never make the postseason if they don't have this format, which is a slap in the face to the times most of these teams went deep into the postseason under a far more difficult format prior to the 3 divisions per league... and... depending on who you talk to, there is also a weird and very toxic hatred of the top teams. There's a legit desire to NOT see the best teams in the postseason, which is weird, but might speak more towards today's online culture than anything. The best course of action is to just not watch, but the casual fan could care less about the format or anything. They just want to watch baseball, so... it's unlikely they will change unless it is to add more teams into the bracket. It will get to a point where half the league is in the playoffs.

@@OGTirpleOG I hope you're trolling. Simulation games? So lets send out our bullpen or Strider and Max to throw heat so their arms don't get any rest before the series? That's the problem IT IS THAT HARD. You can't pretend to swing at elite 99mph balls. There is no simulating that. It's constant repetition, like playing an instrument. If you don't do it for a week, when you come back to it it takes a bit to find your groove. I'm a drummer for many years and that's exactly how it is.

@@OGTirpleOG For your info, the Braves played three simulation games during their break. They were all free to the public and anyone who wanted could just show up at Truist Park and come sit in the front row. It was like a minor league atmosphere, great for fans.

Other sports (Ive coached volleyball for 28 years; played fast-pitch 20 years, pitched 13 years, its up & down; in and out at 90mph) you are scrimmaging at GAME SPEED, on 'days off'. Sit at home, what the freak!!! OMG...just scrimmage, play workup, so it's random, and gamelike, you have all these pitchers, create game situations...you can channel in crowd noise...Jeepers Cats!!!😮😅😮

Even way back in the day when there was just a 7 game world series it was different. The extra days off shortened the need for starting pitchers and a "weaker" team with just 2 unhittable starters had a leg up

One would have to check the stats from 2012-2022. Did the Wild Card team usually beat the Division Winner? If so, how could the MLB not have thought of this, this would be absolutely ridiculous. Also why wouldn't they just make it a 16 team post season? Since this would mean more tv and ticket money for the league, and more playoff games, a higher chance for your team to make it to the playoffs for the fans. It seems like a win/win for everybody to make it a 16 teams post season.

Yep, there's no way you can expect a team to have rhythm after a 6 day layoff. Part of the reason a team was so good is that they played almost every day. They're at a disadvantage having to wait 6 days to play a team that's already played at least 2 games, and is in rhythm.

Astros got to the ALCS with either being in the Wild Card or with 5 days rest. In the playoffs, it’s all about team continuity. Astros have done this time and time again.

David is correct about the hitters, but the pitchers need to be throwing as well. Ball players don’t rest, they rust. The more you play the better you play. Some team will figure that out, go to a four-man rotation, and dominate. It only worked that way for the better part of a century. Human physiology hasn’t changed since the 70s. The more your pitchers throw, the better they‘ll feel.

Good players and organizations get ready for the playoffs. Pitching machines, playing against minor league players, etc. They don’t sit at home knowing they need the reps to stay focused. If they are, you’re not utilizing your time wisely. I’m hearing excuses. I can understand game one, but game 2 and 3? Again hearing excuses.

Great points, Justin!! This is a major flaw. Some people argue why didnt affect houston. Man, top 4 teams are superior by their records. Of course you wont see all 4 teams lose even with the long layoff. Look at mlb playoff history from the last 50 years, top teams consistently won more than 62% of first round. Although the same size is small, top seeds dont have the advantage anymore. It is a 50 50 chance now (if not lower)

@@PhilDoctor no it's not that at all but seeing you are a Philly fan completely explains your thoughts. Your team, the Phillies, had absolutely no business in the playoffs at all. They didn't win their division so why are they there? A wildcard? They were rewarded with playoff games while the division winner got to stay at home and play simulated games. Huge difference, especially in baseball. This might help teams in football but not baseball. However you want to look at it the wildcard slot needs to be gone completely. Why should any subpar team all season get a chance to beat the division winners in the first place? It's moronic.

@@Mox3712 The Braves didn't show up, it's that simple. They aren't built for the playoffs and don't have players that want to win. Dodgers are the same exact way. And what's the point of winning 100+ games and your division if you can't beat a "subpar" wildcard team? The playoffs are made for the best teams in baseball, and the Braves aren't one of those teams. Great regular season team, but the playoffs are completely different. But I shouldn't be surprised you're saying this since Braves fans and Dodgers fans share one thing in common, they think they've won before the playoffs begin. Dodgers fans and Braves fans think they should just be handed the trophy without playing a single playoff game because they know their team isn't build to actually compete. And if the wildcard shouldn't exist, then the Braves would still get a week long break as the #1 seed. There's 3 divisions with 3 division winners, and 3 teams can't play each other at the same time. So #2 and #3 would play a series while #1 waits. Then you'll just sit there and make excuses again. The Braves have never beaten the Phillies in a playoff series because the Braves are too weak. You can make all the excuses you want, but great teams show up and compete in the playoffs.

A sample size of 2 years. That means there has been 8 1 & 2 seeds. Out of the 8 1 & 2 seeds, just 3 have advanced to the CS. On paper this looks like a horrible format. This looks detrimental to baseball. However, with context you see 4 of the 1 & 2 seeds have been the same 2 teams. 2 teams that are, throughout the history of wild card era post season baseball, horrible October performers. The 5th team is a team that is super talented but no experience whatsoever in October. But Braves and Dodgers? Just blame everything except their willingness to show up and their ability to play past 162.

David Justice is absolutely correct! Bottom Line is MLB RUINED POST SEASON BASEBALL with the wild card games and the Long Time Off for Division Winners! FACT. It's obvious with Both the Dodgers and Braves losing last years post season after 20 game and 14 game slaughters of their division second place finishers. Then, this year Braves and Dodgers, and add Orioles, slaughter 2nd place teams in each of their divisions - Heck, the East was over by the All Star Break for the Braves! Yet Division Winners are Penalized with a 6 day layoff between end of season and first game of Playoffs for Division Winners! When teams play a marathon 162 game schedule over 6+ months and win by 14 games over 2nd place, it needs to means something! 🏆👍 As we have it, teams in the wild card series have a HUGE ADVANTAGE because they stay sharp seeing the intensity of opposing teams high velocity and MLB quality breaking pitches as an immediate extension of the regular season. They stay sharp and have that momentum from continued play, where the Division Winners have to sit for 6 days before another game, losing ALL OF THEIR MOMENTUM and GROOVE TO. MLB MUST FIX this ridiculous schedule! The schedule is not fair for the Division Winners. No Team that plays nearly every day for 6+ months wants to sit for 6 days between real games! There is no REAL REASON FOR A Regular Season! They might as well just play the 60 games of the pandemic season! MLB has put NO VALUE into Winning The Division. THE VALUE IS NOT WINNING! NOT SITTING FOR 6 DAYS!!! It's happened for two years straight! Braves win Division By 14 games EACH YEAR! Dodgers win by 20 games last year! Orioles lead for months. All had NO OFFENSE AFTER SITTING FOR 6 DAYS. The Braves tied the team Home Run Record of 2019 when the baseballs were juiced, and they weren't juiced this year! They are the only team in MLB history to slug over .500 ! That's nearly 150 years!They led pretty much all categories. Many are wondering if the Braves have the best offense ever, with maybe the nearly 100 year old 1927 Yankees as the only debate! Yet, no offense after 6 days of losing all momentum. Las Vegas must be PISSED OFF. ALL of their odds for winning the World Series are Shot! And all so TV stations can show more games and make more money!💰💰💰 MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL IS A BAD & SAD JOKE! 🤷😩

I agree with David Justice. The most obvious solution is to have 8 teams from each league in the first round. That would have everyone playing in each round. Making the regular season a little shorter wouldn't hurt either. The world series playing into mid November is just asking for weather trouble. Remember 2008 in Philadelphia?

Before I listen, this is what I have been saying for years and the MAIN REASON I quit watching baseball 20 years ago. Lets see if I agree....WHO NEEDS PLAYOFFS with 162 game schedule per se? So, the 3 game series is stupid, they should go back to 4 teams max. Here is why the playoff schedules HURTS the better team. Remember Arizona when they had Schilling and Randy Johnson? They had 2 GREAT PICTURES, not 3 or 4, but with the stupid schedule spreading out games for TV where those type teams can get their best 2 pitchers 4 maybe even 5 games in a 7 game series. the advantage goes to that team with inferior overall pitching. And just like the SESEAN, each team should play every day.

If teams can stay hot after the all star break, to pteams should have a problem staying hot into the playoffs with a short break. The problem is these top teams actually have to conpete now, and they dont have players that care enough about winning to compete. Look at the Dodgers every single year. They're happy enough being regular season champs, so it's no surprise when they lose every year. The MLB is no longer a league where you can win in the regular season and then sit on your ass as you coast into the NLCS/ALCS at mininum. These top teams have to prove that they are actually the top teams. People just don't like it because these regular season teams are getting exposed.

Because they had to play for something till the last day, everyone else had their divisions wrapped up days before, or in some cases weeks before the end of the season. Houston had to stay hot, or they'd be a wild card team, or even out of the playoffs. It's not hard to understand that momentum plays a major part in baseball, and if you sit too long, momentum goes away.

I think you give the top 2 seed division winner not only a bye but you give them an extra game in a series. The division winners in the NLDS only need to win 2 vs the wildcards still need to win 3.

Their points sound good, but the real test is to look up the postseason won-lost records of the teams with extra rest during the wildcard era.

The main problem with the format is the layoff for top teams. They've played 162 games with no more than one day off at a time, save for the all-star break. And now, they're having a 6-day layoff before they play their first postseason game, against a team that already has played at least 2 games. That team and their hitters are going to be in rhythm while the top team hasn't faced game action in almost a week and is not going have that rhythm. And in a best of 5 series, if you can't find that rhythm, your season is going to be over quick. You can't simulate game action, unfortunately. Probably the only fix would be to add two more teams to the playoffs to have a 1-8 bracket and all teams play a best of 3 series in the opening round so that the teams all the teams are on equal footing. Because sinply getting rest for having one of the best records is not helping. They need games.

My suggestion is along the same line. Add a 4th WC team from each league. Single elimination playoff beginning the day after the regular season. All games played at WC1 stadium. Two games on the first day WC1 vs WC4, WC2 vs WC3 (higher seed is the home team). Third game played the next day with the winner moving on to LDS as number 4 seed. LDS series begin the next day. Currently there is no real reward for a team winning their division and wild card teams are rewarded for winning a best of 3 game series. I say make them battle it out to move on. Short downtime for division winners and WC teams will need to use valuable resources to try and extend their seasons. Therein lies the real reward for winning a division. If a WC team can advance to the LCS in this format good on them. If not, it shows the regular season matters after all.

I think a potential format could still be a 16 team playoff with 3, 4, 5, & 6 seeds having a 1 game WCS day after regular season. DS is played after a 2 day regular season break but is a 7 game series just like the CS and WS. That way nobody can cry about a 1st round bye it's only 2 days off. But you still have the adrenaline rush of 3 teams fighting tooth and nail for a WC spot at the end of the regular season. And MLB gets the potential for 53 post season games (currently the maximum potential with current set up is 46) if some how every series in the postnseason went 7 games. Just my opinion on trying to bring the best of both worlds. More competition in the post season with less breaks (and of course MLB gets their money cause they're greedy like that).

No first round byes in the playoffs. Have all teams compete starting Day 1 with the top seed playing the lowest seed

This is absolutely ridiculous. Why wouldn't they just make it a 16 team post season? Since this would mean more tv and ticket money for the league, and more playoff games, a higher chance for your team to make it to the playoffs for the fans. It seems like a win/win for everybody to make it a 16 teams post season.

If you have two great pitchers and they are on a roll, it's over in a 5 or 7 game series. Regular season 162 game success doesn't matter one bit.

@ronaldm.haynes6042 Schilling and Randy Johnson pulled the Diamondbacks through. Good pitching will shut down good hitting, and you can overuse them for a 5 game and 7 game series. Doing that for 162 games, you would destroy a pitcher. I'm a Dodgers fan. So disappointing. Again. Lol.

With 3 game WCS if you don't want to risk playing 13 straight games,10 of those being post season, win your division and have the 1st or 2nd best record in your league. And MLB gets the potential for 53 post season games (currently the maximum potential with current set up is 46) if some how every series in the postnseason went 7 games. If you sweep a team and get extra days off it's called "able to get your pitching lineup reset". If you get days off due to a bye it's called "bad for your team". Be consistent.

@@pandabear1341I canceled MLB subscription as soon as I found out home games are blacked out. Unfortunately for me regular season games are on ATT Sportsnet and I don't have cable and the only other platform that carries ATT Sportsnet is Direct TV which is expensive AF. I have ESPN+ for the WCS , (and really only have it cause kf the disney, hulu bundle for my kids) then have to purchase a subscription to Sing, because they have FS1 and TBS but it's also expensive, every October and cancel it every November. For the regular season it's a crapshoot on how I watch the games unless the game is on Apple TV once a month. It's freaking ridiculous. Being able to watch the games should be a much bigger issue than the playoff format. The watchability effects everyone that didnt buy a ticket, while this playoff format has only been detrimental to 2 teams. 2 teams that, throughout history, just have laughable playoff stats in general.

Anyone in here that says the format is fine because the damn Astros beat the twins is a joke and does not know baseball. The Twins division is so weak and they barely won that division. You can not be off a week...period. The wc team should not be able to keep their rhythm and the teams that earned that by winning more games are punished for winning. I am not saying that the teams that have won don't deserve it or playing well right now, I am saying there is a disadvantage for teams that played well all year.

Lol just because the Astros aren’t as affected by it. This allows teams to gain steam and get playoff juices flowing then they face a team that’s ice cold. All of the Braves Orioles and Dodgers game is predicated on scoring quickly because none of those teams have A+ starting pitching atm. It was a perfect storm.

Sure it has some merit BUT answer me this...What's the excuse for TB, Toronto, Milwaukee & Miami for being swept in the WC round this year since they were not off for 5 days and each team's offense went to SH*T as well??? Look back at the history of the MLB playoffs to see how many times the top seed in each league won the pennant???!!! This new format is fine and the sample size is way too small to make these outlandish assumptions!!! I'm a Phillies fan and although we reached the WS last year & NLCS so far this year, I would NEVER prefer entering the playoffs as a Wild Card team as opposed to being a top 2 seed with the GUARNTEED 1st round bye!!!

The Brewers and Twins got screwed. They won there division and they were in the Wild Card. Basically no reward for winning your division. There should be 5 teams in the playoffs, like it was, in each league. But have the Wild Card be the best of 5 Series. Not just one game. I think it should be this way because if you have 3 Wild Card teams 6 in each league. I think that because there's 162 games in a season and if you can't make it to 5 team playoff. Than you don't deserve to be in the playoffs. I know it's only 1 more team in each league but it makes so much of a difference !!

I don't even watch the playoffs these past couple of years. Teams barely over .500 don't deserve to play in the playoffs. Sorry not sorry. The seasonal games lose tremendous value when you let everybody into the playoffs. And everybody knows anybody can beat anybody in MLB in a short series.

Maybe we should listen to these guys for a second and I mean listen. They explain the problem, but no team does anything to solve it. We take BP but we’re taking it against coaches we don’t see certain kinds of pitches. Well, maybe what you should be doing is bringing in pictures regardlessof who they may be and throwing those types of pitches during batting practice, G now there’s an idea. The bottom line is good teams fine ways of winning and there is definitely a difference between the regular season and playoffs. Some teams are built to win in the regular season, while other teams are built to win in the playoffs.

Listen, the "world series" has been a joke since 1969. Here is an idea: How about a 162 game playoff series with all teams invited. Best in the national vs best in the american in October. I'm sick of 80-something win teams being crowned "world champions" for having a two week hot streak. I know this is required for all the ADHD kids that need constant stimulation but it has watered down the game to the point of absurdity. Does anyone on the planet earth think the Diamondbacks are better than LA? Yes, in three games. 3 GAMES! pathetic display of how inaccurate the current "everyone gets in the playoffs" schedule is All for no reason other than $$$$. Houston had to stay hot to the last day of the regular season, everyone else already had their divisions wrapped long before, and took their foot off the gas, and rested key players down the stretch. Houston really had less time to cool off than everyone else, no one else had to fight tooth and nail down to game 162 this year. Houston, despite winning the series, 2 of those 3 wins weren't really blowouts, so their offense wasn't really clicking either.

The MLB needs to shorten the length of the regular season and implement a 16 team playoffs format, 7 game series each round. It will make the playoffs more interesting and get more fan bases involved.
