Welcome to our Spotlight Sessions, a series dedicated to conversations with change-makers and people that have made an impact on the community of people with disabilities.
In this episode, we had the opportunity to speak with David Korse, President and CEO of Abilities Expo. Originally founded by Dick Warman, a post polio survivor who was really frustrated that his local dealer in the Los Angeles area had such a limited selection of products, later came up with the idea of putting on the Expo so he and his friends could go shopping for whatever was new and interesting. Abilities Expo is the nation’s leading event for people with disabilities, their families, caregivers and healthcare professionals. For more than four decades, the Community has gathered at Abilities Expos all over the country to discover the latest, life-enhancing products and services.
David Korse shared his thoughts on the following topics:
1. How Abilities Expo came around and the reason why it was founded.
2. Why it’s so important that the Ability Expo connects the business world with the disability community.
3. Why both businesses and the community benefit from the Expo experience.
4. How the mantra ‘it’s about what you can do, not what you can’t’ came about for the event.
5. Why businesses are making judgements about the disability community from afar, and how this should change.
