Roth's stage presence and theatrics were the reasons why Van Halen was such a big commercial success. Hard-core rock fans may prefer what's his name....you know, the other lead singer after him - can't remember his name. That's my point! Even 40 years later, when people recall 80's rock sound, they recall David Lee Roth's version of Van Halen - all those iconic songs. And I didn't even like Van Halen during my high school years. I like them now (because their sound was the sound of my youth!)

Cocaine and ego ruined the first Van Halen but we were lucky to get 6 albums from that bottle of lightning!

I heard David Lee Roth wasn't into "I'll Wait" either but he was a hero on that album because he gave it his all for everything including the stuff he disapproved of. 1984 is NOT my favorite Van Halen album and I'm NOT really a fan of Eddie's keyboard playing but I can appreciate that there was a lot going into that album, that's the one that sold, and some of the songs ("Hot For Teacher", "Girl Gone Bad") are their best. Eddie was going to take that band in that direction and I think that was the right decision for him no matter how on board or not other guys felt about it. And 1984 is better than Diver Down.

The day EVH passed, I was unaware of it. I was at work doing mindless tasks as usual and so, there was always a song playing in my head. That day, 'Intruder' was stuck in my head at work- ALL DAY LONG. And later that evening my brother told me Eddie had passed.. It was kinda weird.. He was an icon to me; my fav guitarist. I grew up on VH from 1979. It was so odd that that song was stuck on repeat in my head that day that he passed away, as I was unaware. His passing was also so unexpected.....
@philliplandry4139 Жыл бұрын
It was unexpected but it wasn't a surprise. Ed had been ill for quite some time before he passed. He hadn't performed since 2015. That's five years before he passed. Within those five years, I don't think he didn't barely touch his guitar during those periods. He finally made amends with Sammy and Michael because he wanted to have one last reunion before he leaves. He knew his time was coming but didn't know when.
@coldwinter5710 Жыл бұрын
@@philliplandry4139 In truth, Ed had been battling his original cancer diagnosis, on & off, for a good 20 years. He put massive amounts of energy, time & money (w/new experimental options) into trying to keep his cancer in remission, via on-going treatments over many, many years. Sadly, the one thing he really needed to do, which may very well have saved his life, was to quit smoking. He never did. He went to vaping, thinking this was better for him, but he never quit. He was in complete denial about his smoking contributing to his cancer. It may not have been its original cause, (maybe his metal picks, as he was convinced, or more likely, a victim of HPV), regardless, his continued smoking certainly carried it throughout. (Another 7 yrs of heavy drinking, after his orig diagnosis, certainly didn't help either). But the continued daily smoking really sunk him & must have frustrated his Dr's to no end. This was also the straw that broke his marriage to Val. She could no longer handle his unwillingness to stop smoking/drinking for good, after his original diagnosis. They were talking about planning the "Kitchen Sink" tour, to take place summer of 2018, ("And it would have been epic!" according to their mgr), but the cancer just kept spreading, & after 2017, further treatments & surgeries certainly weakened him considerably. Sammy FINALLY got some balls & reached out to Ed, in 2020, mending their (wasted years of animosity), but Mike never did. I did read somewhere that Ed texted to Sam, "Tell Mikey I love him", but I don't know if this is true or not. I only saw this stated once, so maybe not true? But he & Mike did NOT speak again before he died. Mike has admitted to this, & has stated that it really bothers him. Pretty sad to think about. If cancer doesn't make you reach out to someone, not sure what will. So much wasted time...
@philliplandry4139 Жыл бұрын
His cancer diagnosis did come off/on for the past 20 years. The smoking and drinking did had affected his first marriage including his passing. The thing was, we didn't find out he had cancer again until early of 2020. The only clue we had before during that time for the moment was DVR gave some hint stating "Eddie is not doing well". Because Eddie didn't want the public to know he was diagnosed with cancer again. After Sammie and Eddie made up. I believe Mike was planning to do the same by visiting Eddie himself but COVID screwed that up. Because I don't think Mike is that cold. Mike probably was very sensitive about seeing him again after the way Eddie mistreated him for all those years.

Wonder if the remaining original members of Van Halen are going to play live in concert with prerecorded audio and video track on the big screen of Edward. Just like they did with Elvis Lives! but instead of Elvis, you have EVH.

I’m glad Dave can look back on those days and the good outweigh the bad cuz I do feel for the guy. He had ZERO idea of the musical genius that happened to be his guitar player. He knew him as the kid he grew up with and knew he could shred guitar better than anyone else…. “My guitar player is better than yours is man”. I garuntee that silliness was said early on. Dave had no idea of the virtuoso he had on his hands. So looking back obviously he should’ve just went along for the ride. “You want to play keyboards Ed? Sure man. They will be the best damn keyboards anyone has heard.” That should’ve been Dave’s attitude but let’s also consider the times like he said, yes it was all about the guitar (actually I think Eddie made it all about the guitar since we hadn’t had a mainstream player like him since Jimi, I said mainstream, sure there was players). But also they pioneered the excess of the late 70’s early 80’s. They got to enjoy the fruits of the stadium rock bands that made rock a big business in the 70’s. Their music was a bottle rocket at the exact time when you could live like a bottle rocket! The money, the fame, the women, the cocaine, the ego all while they were in there 20’s! It’s a miracle that band gave us 6 fantastic albums imo.

This is what I heard David say years ago, "If you have the greatest guitarist way do you need the keyboards?" I also heard that this was one of the things that caused the breakup. DVR was so narrow minded.

I got to see VH in '84 for their 1985 album, just before their split. It was in Indianapolis, IN (Dave's hometown). He made sure to remind us of THAT! It was at Market Square Arena...BEST concert I've EVER been to! Quiet Riot was there the wknd before. Kevin DeBrow brought out a bottle of Whiskey (it was really tea), anyway, Dave made reference to this by opening, on stage, a bottle of Jim or Jack...anyway, he said-"now this is the REAL sh*#!" and took a huge swig! Ah, those were the days! They had such an off and on career, but in the end, they STILL remain one of the BEST rock bands in history!! EVER! Beatles, Stones, etc...sure they were good, but they didn't leave an impression on the world like VH did! Many guitarist got their start because of Ed AND Dave. A LOT of bands looked up to them and were successful because they followed their genre! If you look at most of your famous guitarist/lead singers...they'll tell ya...VH inspired them!

First of all, I been with your channel since 50k subs. Second of all don't be "that guy" for clicks. EVERYTHING in this video is old, including Roth's distaste of the synth part from Jump. It's literally why he left the band. Us Van Halen fans have known this since 1985 when BOTH Roth and Ed/Alex HAD to give the public a reason of his departure. Roth is just rehashing this same story but it ISN'T news. You weren't even born yet when VH split my dude. Also, of course Roth "loves" Ed ... now.... He didn't for 23 very long years until 2007 while Sammy held the mic. That's a noted/documented fact. The VH camp was always drama, no matter how you spin it but don't post a video like this as if if it's "Rock News" .... cause it isn't. I expect better from you.

Dave left the band. That was it. It was a power struggle. Ed hated how Dave liked to do cover versions of older songs and only wanted to stay party rock oriented. Ed knew their audience was getting older and to stay relevant, their music had to grow up with the audience. Dave hated the move to keyboard music and while he talks about "Jump" today as a fond song, he hated it in the studio. Ed built his own studio before 1984 was recorded just so he could get back more control of the band after what happened on "Diver Down" and all the cover tunes. Dave left and the three remaining members had no idea what they were going to do. It was not planned. The Dave does and assembles a really kick ass band and kept it strictly rock n roll.

At first I thought the the lyrics to - 'Jump' - was just a bunch of typical, rock lyric gobbledygook. However if you listen to them carefully, you can easily see how they reflect David's thoughts on the band having to do this song on Eddie's insistence.
