Seeing this interview when Dave was in his prime after seeing an interview with Dave today, I realised that Dave's personality hasn't changed. He is a true free spirit with a unique talent. "Ain't nuthin stays the same - unchained... and you hit the ground running!" Grew up with this band. Diamond David Lee Roth did it right. He was fun, and whether you liked him or not, when he was doing what he does you couldn't take your eyes off him! That's showbiz folks, and he killed it. A perfect rock and roll example of chemistry, geography, timing and a little magic sprinkled on top. Kids will never know the concert experience as it was in 80's. Remember camping our for tickets?? That was a party in itself, a two-week long reason to skip school, get 5th row seats for all your friends, and revel in the ultimate tailgate party before the show. Those were concerts! That was rock and roll, and in that environment Van Halen were Gods. Heck, their first show in ATX was opening for Sabbath in '78! We all were like holy shit, so that's how you do it?? Dave was doing jump-splits off pa stacks, hadn't found bleach yet, and Eddie was turning around on his solos to hide his technique! My ears rang in school for the next three days, everybody glowing talking about and wearing their shirts from the show, and where the band was spotted after hours. What a ride those days were. The early 80's was the best time to grow up with rock and roll. Think Fast Times at Ridgemont High meets Dazed and Confused 🤔🤟✌

But the real sad thing is that I just got a very bad feeling that we are gonna lose Eddie. I heard that the mouth cancer he has been battling for around 10/15 years has returned. And now it's in his throat too. That my friends is not a good sign in the cancer world. It's a sad story. And we should all pray for Eddie and his family. Including Dave too. Truth is Ed, Al and Dave were all to blame. Dave wasn't happy that Ed took more control of the music and built his own recording studio, the VH brothers were mad that Dave went off recorded an EP (Crazy from the Heat). Plus, those 3 were together for over 10 years and grew to hate each other (familiarity breeds contempt as they say). Finally, mix in a lot of cocaine and egos...then there you go. In the long run, it worked out better for the VH brothers as they had a decade more of success with Hagar (until the VH bros fucked that up). As for Dave, after Eat Em' and Smile it was all downhill from there.

David Lee Roth is an artful bull shitter with out doubt. But after hearing Sammy Haggar talk about his departure of Van Halen, there seems to be a problem with Eddie and his brother Alex.. they appear to be jealous of any lead singers popularity exceeding theirs. Any outside ventures by David or Sammy were frowned upon. So the Van Halen's insecurity causes all of the bands problems and that's a shame.

the Van Halen Bros.WERE the problem within the band. they ACT so cute and innocent...but if you listen to interviews...serious interviews with Either DAVE or SAMMY....the truth is the truth ,and the same for both, they were TOLD TO LEAVE. Because the Van Halens are like jealous little kids, Dave was starting to do some solo stuff, and direct his music videos, because he's talented that was...Sam was starting his own thing in Cabo, and with the Tequila and all. The Van Halens said, fuck them...then of course got Cherone...that flopped, , then did a Sam and Dave show..that flopped, then did a 'Reunion' with Sammy tour, and that sucked, then did 'nothing ' for years and years and years until getting Dave back in to do A Different Kind of Truth Album in '012...which was hot as hell, only because DLR brought his lyrics and a pretty decent voice to to that record. it's like old Van Halen again. I think it was fairly clear to Dave that trying to make another album was impossible because Eddie and Alex were full on Alcoholics. Dave did his fair share but seemed to know how to clear the head after touring by heading off to the Jungle. Dave's movie took priority over his band. Which he blatantly insulted by wanting them to take a backseat and basically be a backing band for the soundtrack which he just assumed Eddie would write all the music for. Self awareness in any capacity would mean having some sort of understanding and consideration for your bandmates and not just your own trip. To be a fucking team player. But I digress, because at the end of the day his Vegas Schtick blew up in his face and his solo career was in the water by 1991 as a result. Meanwhile, the actual musicians in the band carried with 4 #1 albums in a row and remained relevant amongst the current generation of bands that buried their peers. Not bad for a bunch of alcoholics that couldn't get it together.

You want to start at one in the afternoon? That's fine too. But we start - and we're gonna do everything." I brought this movie to the Van Halens, I said, "C'mon guys, let's do this - we'll make the music, I can work on the editing, we'll make a stage show..?" No, no, no, no. "We're just a band, man - we just want to make a record and stay in the studio." Really? How long? "Well, better give it a year." A year? All right, my last record was only four songs long - it took me five days. A year? I don't know if Templeman's gonna go along with that, I don't know if the producer's gonna go along with that. "Well, we wanna produce ourselves." Produce ourselves? What's the payoff? "Well, we're tired of these long, five- or six-month tours. You know, all over the world. We don't have to do that anymore." That's true we don't have to do it anymore. What are we gonna do? "Well, Alex and I have been talking, we figure that just a couple of months in the stadiums in the summer of '86'll cut it - then we'll get all the people, it'll be no problem." Two months? In the stadiums? Forget it! If it's a statement kind of celebration - if you're gonna do Farm Aid - great reason to have a stadium gig. Perhaps another artist can communicate with that many people better than I can. But I can't. I think it's a rip-off. You get in a stadium, 20 yards back, you can't hear. Eighty yards back, you can't see. It's a rip-off. And I said, "No, I'm not gonna play it." -DLR, Creem, 1986.

He never really could. The Van Halen brothers were constantly looking for another singer. But since Dave had the space and the gear they kept him longer than they expected. How do I know? I'm from the SGV and the same city Michael Anthony comes from. Everybody has VH stories around here.

I saw Van Halen 10 years ago on a reunion tour with David Lee Roth... It was my life's dream to see them back together onstage. The concert SIUCKED! Diamond Dave kept forgetting the lyrics to their classic songs! That was the worst concert I've ever attended.

I have read articles stating that Eddie and Alex VanHalen were both very difficult to work with, not wanting any input from the other members of the band. Kind of it was their way or the highway. Any comments??

Van halen had their day but that's ancient history now and in time no one will care. Guitar heroes come and go and no one likes a bitter resentful musician. Dave at least speaks his mind and isn't trying to get anyone to dislike the vh boys.

It's funny, the pieces are not always fully connected to the puzzle and you have to go in search of clues, but when tidbits like this come to the surface, I gotta say Dave is looking like the innocent guy in more and more situations. not saying he never was an ass at times, because he definitely could be.

Dave had a vision for Van Halen! Creative differences and fair enough. They had a decade long run together. Ed worked so well playing deep in the pocket with his wizardry from beyond, shame he let his ego ruin it. Van Hagar had no real view beyond generic millionaire rockstars. Roth kept them raw and edgy. Like he said sleeping on a bus bare essentials. Rarefied air.

sounds about right, been there, band mates are always in motion, it's a fluid situation, relationships, musical/professional interests, and so forth, come to band practice one day and it's full of girlfriends and their friends, and the conversations are about everything but music. get me out of here, this isn't what i signed up for.

They broke up mainly for creative differences. Eddie wanted to do original music and he already had created tons of music and DLR /Templeman wanted to keep doing covers. That’s why EVH built his studio and was able to record Jump. Roth didn’t want Eddie playing keyboards.

I love Dave, and Van Halen was not the Mighty Van Halen when he left, but the band did not “break up.” I enjoyed the band with Sammy, but let’s not kid ourselves. My first car, Van Halen’s first album (which I promptly blew the speakers out with) THAT was the back seat soundtrack to my fledgling hedonistic life, and still is in the 3 disc changer in my Vette…what the hell was I talking about? Oh yeah, the band never broke up, Dave left, Sammy joined and there you have it! A small point to make in a long post, but I ain’t got nothing else to do…

“I’m gonna abandon my spirit to them which is exactly what I attempt to do. You work yourself up into that state and you fall into the supplication of the demon gods.” - David Lee Roth (Rock, April 1984, page 30) “I started playing guitar, drinking, and smoking at the age of twelve.” - Edward Van Halen Where did Eddie get his inspirations for songs and the tones he came up with for them? Well, here is an excerpt from a January 1997 Guitar World interview Eddie connected. It was in an article titled UNCHAINED MELODIES by Steven Rosen. These are actual quotes by Eddie Van Halen given: “It’s a wicked feeling when a complete piece of music comes to you. But it’s not me, I’m just a vehicle and I really believe that.” “I ended up writing five songs that day including the music for Me Wise Magic. It blew my mind. I just didn’t want to believe I could do it without drinking.” “Then she had me do some yoga and meditation and some chanting. Next she had me close my eyes and imagine the room that you go to after you’ve had a six-pack of beer. Really try and feel that place. The therapist continued and said, Look you’ve been chosen to do this. All you are doing by drinking is blocking it. It’s a lot easier for them to send it when you are clear.” I wonder who “them” is? Also, Valerie Bertenelli is wicked as well. Valerie is an icon of show business and why is that? Yes she is pretty and she seems to have done a great job raising her son Wolfgang Van Halen. But she has been known to attend the Kabbalah Center and she wears a red string on her wrist which signifies allegiance to the devil. Here is an excerpt from her book Losing It: And Gaining My Life Back One Pound At A Time by Valerie Bertinelli on pages 157-158: Thankfully, I was able to stay at home for my next project, Murder of Innocence. Although shot locally, it took me as far away from myself as I’d ever been. The character I played, Laurie Wade, was a newlywed whose childhood traumas trigger a series of psychotic breaks that lead her to shoot at schoolchildren. She then commits suicide. Though the project let me work with director Tom McLoughlin again, I didn’t for one minute like climbing into the skin of this woman. I had the feeling that the ghost of Laurie Wade didn’t like it either. One day Tom and I were walking down a tree-lined street in an residential neighborhood, going over a scene in which Laurie is in a manic state when suddenly we heard an ear-splitting squawk that I swear to God sounded like someone saying “Get off!” Both of us looked up and saw two giant ravens sailing toward each other, like two planes on a collision course. We didn’t see them hit, but suddenly one bird fell from the sky hitting tree branches on its way down and landing with a thud at my feet. I looked down and saw blood dripping from its mouth. I looked at Tom and said, “I don’t want to be this woman anymore.” As the weeks progressed I broke down into hives and rashes. They had dermatologists visit the set. Nothing worked. Something about that part got under my skin and triggered a reaction. That’s why I couldn’t wait for the movie to end. I wanted Laurie to leave me alone. Now, isn’t that sick? Hollywood is sick! Valerie married Eddie on 4/11/81. 111 days later MTV debuts. All the rock and roll people who loved Eddie and all the TV fans who loved Valerie “came together” on April 11th when they married. Just in time for MTV which debuted a few months later. Music and Television merges and Eddie and Valerie helped it a long. MTV went on to be a socialistic enterprise to destroy culture. See the 11’s? Married on the 11th? 111 days later MTV debuts…

These guys are all awesome and the Mighty VH will always reign Supreme. It's like anything else, stardom, fame, ego, money...its all designed to strip the core down. There will always be conflict amd listening to Dave, who is an awesome dude but just over confident and cocky at times, he knew he had to go. The biggest point of the band and the balloon popped but honestly, there's no fault to be blamed. I mean Eddie, Alex and Mikey did just fine with Sammy and Roth had so much band talent from Vai, Kotzen, Bissonette, Sheehan...he did ok. In the end, they remained friends. Gary Cherone works at Papa John's in Cambridge Ma.

The one thing about "Diamond Dave" becoming a solo artist is the fact we got to hear him perform with Steve Vai, Billy Sheehan, Greg Bissionette and Jason Becker. The guitarist that played on the "Your Filthy Mouth" release is no slouch either. ( His first name is Terry,I have no recollection of his surname, perhaps someone does, if so please inform me.)
