I guess like a lot of people I’m looking back at some of the stuff in retrospect, after Eddie passed. It seems like Dave at that point in his life had matured a good bit and had come to terms with how things were and even understanding how that led to their sound to begin with. I’ll let others argue vocalists for the rest of eternity, but for me Dave’s voice and monstrous stage presence was the perfect complement to Eddie’s revolutionary guitar playing. I think as a front man Dave shined every bit as bright as Eddie did which in my opinion probably Led to the headbutting but again it wouldn’t have been what it was had that not all been there together. Rest in peace Eddie

My father and I went backstage and met Van Halen at the now defunct Cape Cod Coliseum around 1981. The three of us hung out and chatted for about 20 minutes after the show. Dave was a real nice guy and it is a nice memory. They were big time by then but the whole band was really nice and had no rock star airs. Probably as alcoholic as Eddie is/was, however, it seems like Dave became impossible to negotiate with; he became totally obsessed with himself and totally inconsiderate to the needs of the others. BTW, his father (now dead) was a real nice guy and his two sisters were nice, too.

Some folks might have been put off by David Lee Roth's cocky attitude at the height of fame, but the reality is that his showmanship and flamboyance is what brought Van Halen to the front line of popularity. Sure, Eddy Van Halen was a superior guitarists, but there were and are many excellent guitarists who could rival Eddy on his own. Eddy was mostly un-spectacular as a visual performer - and the 80's were all about visual with 24 hour MTV when it was all music videos and stadium rock concerts. Without Roth's dynamic stage presence and video appeal, I doubt the band Van Halen would have ever reached the fame that it did.
@SwampEye19 жыл бұрын
Right dude, if Sammy Hagar had been their first singer, they had stayed an average mid seventies rock band, like Montrose ...
@krisross88189 жыл бұрын
+Guiding Mike Van Halen were the band that made the 80's a visual medium. You may be right in your assessment but where your wrong is in the assumption that there were equally skilled and talented rock guitar players. I hate 80's glam music but it did produce many talented players but the those players wouldn't have happened without Edward Van. Eddie ushered in the age of shred guitar, all those guys from the 80's were incorporating tapping and speed picking which was popularized by Eddie. Had Van Halen never of happened the 80's would have produced far different guitar players. In the rock guitar world I can think of only two guys who developed outside of the Van Halen influence. Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen the rest were pretty much clones.
@vanessap61349 жыл бұрын
+Guiding Mike Thing is, the band had ALL the necessary ingredients to be the trend-setters they were. There were great guitarists of that era, but ask ANY pro guitarist out there and every single one will tell how they were blown away by Eddie Van Halen's sound and technique - NO ONE was doing what he was doing, until people started figuring out how to sound LIKE him. Eddie Van Halen is every bit as much original and incomparable as was Jimi Hendrix. But without the high energy visuals and vocals that David Lee Roth brought to the stage and to a brand-new MTV (back when it actual showed music videos), who knows what would've become of the band. I was in my teens back then and I know that all the talk was about Eddie Van Halen's guitar work, not David Lee Roth's stage presence. I think David was more the catalyst that made all the other parts work perfectly together. ... until they weren't working perfectly together anymore ...

I agree that Sammy was the better vocalist, at least in terms of range and consistency. However, it's not fair to Dave to say that he was merely a "hanger-on" and that Sammy "made it real". I agree with many of the usual criticisms of Dave, and that the Sammy years took them in some good, different musical directions, but there's one feeling I can't get past---this may sound shallow, but Van Halen with Roth was just more fun. The early albums were more fun. The songs were more fun, with more personality. Van Halen with Hagar was often more polished, layered, formulaic, and predictable, whether that's good or bad.
@MGarrison10 жыл бұрын
your absolutely right.van halen became more of a chick band with sammy hagar.dave was the quintessential front man in the fact that all the girls wanted him and all the guys wanted to be like him.he had a truckload of charisma.
@TomWhaley6219 жыл бұрын
Mark Flemmer I agree. DLR Van Halen, to me, is Van Halen. I think the band will go down in history for songs like "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" "Hot For Teacher" "Runnin' With the Devil" etc. They were fun and sporadic. Eddie's playing was on fire, and Dave had the show in the palm of his hand. He could literally say anything on stage at any moment and shock and surprise anybody in the room, including the band! Some of Dave's best moments are when he just talks. He brought excitement. Sammy was always kind of stale to me. Where Dave might tell a story in, say, the bridge of "Panama," Sammy would just riff on "Oh it's getting hot tonight! It's getting hotter! It's getting hotter! IT'S GETTING HOTTER!!!!" To me, Sammy was a formulaic front man, and that wasn't what Van Halen needed. I like the chemistry between Roth and Eddie clashing for the spot light. It strengthened the band, where Sammy just kind of sat in the back seat.
@bookemdano91059 жыл бұрын
Mark Flemmer That's a good way to sum it up. Music is so subjective, that it is pointless to say one is "better" than the other. The material they did was different, you can chose whether you like it or not. As far as Dave's voice goes, if you google some really old concert stuff from the '70's, his voice was actually quite good and somewhat faithful to the albums, but I imagine years of boozing and pot smoking sealed his fate. Sammy had better vocals to begin with and took far better care of himself in general, so he can still sing quite well.

I saw Van Halen twice back in the early 80's....absolutely brilliant shows. 20-30 bucks a ticket, everyone standing as close to the stage as possible. One show I was no more than 15-20 feet from them. To pay 100 to 500 for a seat to watch this farce now, is criminal. No thanks, I'll stick to the memories I already have.

It boggles my mind how anyone could NOT like Dave. Yeah, he's kind of bizarre, but the guy is so cheerful all the time. He always has the most positive view on any situation. I hope he'll be active for many more years to come. I want a new album with all new material!

I think it’s his ego they don’t like. Too bad as he is always cheerful

look, we dont go nd see reunion shows for the performance, we go to see the original line-up of band members playing the songs of our youth, which is a more of an emotional or spiritual reasoning, period. It's hard to describe, but it's definitely nostalgic, and some would say bittersweet. It's like restoring an old car. You want to get the original part for the model of the car. It's not the same to get a replica, so you'll polish it up best you can and hope it works. Same thing with VH.

Diamond is well read and therefore very well spoken. An estute man from a family of learn-ed doctors. Uncle Manny, the legendary club owner not to be slighted!

Small world. One of my close friends works for The Viera Company for the guy who founded Viera. Cool. The Pineda extension has been huge for me becuase I live right off the beachside exit to the base and S. Patrick. I also surfed out in CA alot, including spots around Malibu.

Lets not forget Cherone. He was a small part of vh history too. I saw vanhagar in Vegas in 03 and never heard so many people criticize Gary in one room.

A lot more than try to put people down with existential mumbo jumbo on youtube, pal. You're a VH fan. Fantastic, they kick ass. The rest is horse shit.

I've watched a lot of videos with DLR and I'd have to say he's definitely an acquired taste. At first I didn't like him, but the more I watch the more I like him. Brilliant entertainer and methodical communicator. Keep spreading the love David:)

If it wasn't for Dave's dad allowing little Eddie and Alex come over and practice as loud as they wanted after school in their giant home, there would be no Van Halen. Believe that. Kudos to Mr. Roth or more like Mr. Van Halen.

+markmnorcal poor logic. Yeah, I guess Eddie would have given up guitar if not for Dave's Daddy. LOL

So self aware, such a experienced balanced man, so critically thought out and honest - yet, in his own way crazy like a fox. Nice interview, classy respectful, informative & real.

I actually loved DLR when he was a DJ in the Boston area market about12-14 years ago. Loved his show and loved how he kept it breezy and fresh and I loved it when he'd get his sister on the show.

DLR pretty much sums up the history of the band & the essence of their sound -- And I knew there was always conflict betwwen them since they were kids. The brothers never cared for his personality, but realized he was what they needed out front, then a bond & respect grew over time. Never a love-fest, but a brotherly bond & respect

And I might add, as a twist, to imagine that there could have been more mass appeal to the reunion had they stuck to the original blue-print of Van Halen I. Michael Anthony's absence really irked a lot of original fans out there, call them purists, but I call them purveyors of taste. I'm a fan, (and a collector) partial to the Roth years, and decided not to attend because of this. So it's imperative not to label it as a reunion. They could've sold so many more tickets!

i agree! and for those that say he was too over the top? HE HAD TO BE! in order to shine on stage with Alex, Eddie, and Miike otherwise he would have got lost in all that talent. the ultimate frontman!!!!

here's the truth, they're both seriously fucked up in different ways. I would say dave and alex (yes alex) even more so then ed. None of them are “the good guys” except mike. That’s why mike got stepped on. Cuz he was the only good guy among them.
@andrewkoines63894 жыл бұрын
@@cheothegeo2742 Agreed. I love the whole band, but let's not kid ourselves. DLR was probably a nightmare for the rest of the band in the early 80's.
