Carson saw the future! It's still funny to me how much the network establishment got behind Dave early on, when it seemed pretty obvious early on that he was a rebel and a non-traditional entertainer. It shouldn't have been surprising when he got in so many beefs with network executives and on-air talent years later.

While David Letterman hasn't been interviewed or have been in a talk show for a while, this is not his first hour long interview. I saw a couple of videos back in the 90's where he gave an interview with Larry King.

Geez, Dave REALLY seems to hate looking at old tapes of himself and Johnny Carson. You can clearly see his discomfort while they do the split screen of his first Tonight Show appearance and you can kind of make out some sort of threat he makes to Regis if you listen closely, with Regis going 'Oh Dave, No!' in response. I can understand being embarrassed or not wanting to watch a younger version of yourself, but his dislike for it seems to be on another level (especially with the threat to terminate the interview if any more tape is shown)...

if you've ever been in a school play that was taped or if you'e ever been interviewed on local TV and you watched later - for some reason it is VERY difficult to watch yourself. It's because it looks so foreign. You see things that you never knew you did, mannerisms which you were unaware of and you are comparing yourself to others that you like and do the same thing and when you don't look like them, it's painful. Some people get more used to watching themselves then others, but it is a very common thing. You will notice in interviews how many actors refuse to watch themselves in a movie. It messes with their mojo.
