If Mercury had used this in their commercials, they would've sold more cars!

1blastman I don't think so. that flathead,'49 was pretty wimpy compared to the straight 8 cyl Pontiac, Buick, Oldsmobile, completion. As a matter of fact Chevy 217 cu in straight 6 engines ran rings around the the flathead Fords, I owned a'52 chevy. Even the Flathead straight 6 Chrysler engines would beat it. Anything with overhead valves would Make the Ford Flathead stock V8 Look stupid. And it didn't take that much. I owned a couple bone stock flathead 6 cyl engines in Plymouth and Dodge cars. Oh yeah wimpy, Ya, 96 Hp, 5.600 lb car. Blow the doors off a V8 Mercury or any other Flathead V8 stock Ford. Who told U any ford was fast?

brdwonder not questioning what you are saying, just that a cool commercial will sell an inferior product. And with the American buying public being as stupid is as stupid does, would have likely purchased a car with the coolest commercial song. Look at the history at what products sold on the strength of catchy commercial jingles. FYI - wouldn't own or drive a Ford if you gave it to me, well maybe an early Mustang ;o)

+1blastman - I've never really owned an American car. But if I did, it would be a Ford. I think they are a bit superior to the others. And they have pretty much caught up with Japan. Close enough for me. I like the taut feel of German/Swede cars, but you can't match the reliability of Japan.

+Jon Doeringer I'm a Toyota driver in spite of the recalls, I like "Yotas.

+1blastman - Can't beat a Toyota. I have a Lexus RX. It was between that and a Mercedes. But German cars weren't doing well, with reliability. And I never understood the recalls. Did they ever prove the unintended acceleration was real? Or the floor mats being a problem? It's like they paid a huge fine, and that was the end of it. Meanwhile, almost nothing is being done about the grenade-like air bags everyone has! My son has had 2 F150's, for his company. He never had a problem with either. Except getting it in his garage... Like religion and politics, people seem to like or hate certain cars. I've never 'understood' GM cars. But why? I dislike the company. And among American cars, Fords are now rated the best.

@@digitraxanr Is it the Neville Brothers or Terry Evans and Bobby King? I can't tell because of the poor lighting. Great song. Terrible camera work.
